• Responding to email notices you receive.
    **************************************************
In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

  • IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ!! About the Google Adsense ads being displayed

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    Addendum: 01/10/2026
    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Forum moderators WANTED!

In a last ditch effort to get participation up in the discussion forums, I am looking for people to take the role of a moderator in a discussion forum of your choice. One per member, please.

What I am looking for is someone to spark discussions and be there to answer questions when they are posted in YOUR forum. You will be expected to be actively involved and participating in the forum to get other people interested in participating as well. Your role as a moderator will be to keep the peace when things get a little out of hand, but this does not mean that you can force your opinions on anyone else by using the powers of the moderator to do so. I don't need more headaches, so a moderator should MODERATE and not cause or initiate conflict.

Periodically your participation will be audited to see how effective you are at doing the job you are asked to do. One requirement will be that there are already some posts made by you within your forum of choice to show me that you already have an interest and some experience in the topic matter.

You are not required to be an expert. You are expected to be enthusiastic about the animals you are discussing and to be helpful to other people posting there. The whole idea of this is to breathe some life into those stagnant discussion forums that abound on this site.

All members applying for and chosen for this task will be given a free Benefactor level membership for their efforts. If you are already a Benefactor level member, then it will be upgraded to an Endowment level. If you are one of the few with an Endowment level, well heck, I don't know what to offer you. Throw an idea at me and I'll see what I can do for you.

Contact me via private message if you are interested in applying. Remember only ONE moderator per discussion forum and a member can only have ONE forum as moderator. If a sufficiently moving argument can be made for it, I would consider two moderators per forum, but I really only want one member to have the responsibility for ONLY ONE forum.

If you apply and given this position, you are expected to hold up your end of the deal. If I find that you are not, then you will be removed without notice and the position offered to someone else. This is NOT a freebie. I am looking for help with the discussion forums and offering you an opportunity to help make them better. So I am offering the higher level paid memberships as incentive for you to consider this offer.

This offer can be withdrawn at any time.

As you can see from the list, I have been getting a pretty health response to my call for moderators for individual forums. I'll be honest, I am basically just giving the forums on a first come/first served basis. This is for a number of reasons, primary of which is that someone who has found this notice probably spends a good amount of time here anyway and is likely the better choice for something like this even if the expertise level is not at the top of the heap. I'm not looking for icons of the industry for some sort of bragging rights about the people being moderators here. I am looking for people genuinely interested and motivated to help get the discussion forums working and functional. So if you believe you are not qualified because you are not an expert in that field, so what? Do you think you can help? That's all that matters to me.

A couple of stipulations came to mind, however, that I need to further address.

  1. Only members who are current or past paid members will be accepted for the positions. Since a higher level paid membership will be granted to those people accepted for the mod positions, I do not want to bypass the verification process for the BOI that this was designed to help with by skipping over it via the moderator positions.
  2. Along with above, although I am granting a high level paid membership, there is no reason in the world to expect that I will remember this next year when renewal comes around. PLEASE, let me know so I can do the renewal for you. I really don't have the time to try to do this some other way with a special membership group and icon.
  3. I do hope no one will get upset that another person has been chosen for a moderator position simply because they didn't see the notice earlier. After some reflection, I had to do it on a first come/first served basis because otherwise I WOULD get people pissed at me when I had to choose who I thought would be best, and those not getting the position might very well get incensed over that decision. Maybe not the best choice, under all circumstances, but that's the way I am handling this now.
  4. This "plan" I have instituted is actually costing me a fair amount of money, so I am truly asking those people accepted for it to really dig in and get the discussion forums moving. Since everyone chosen has been a paid member, they will now no longer need to pay for a membership since they get one for free via this program. I am quite willing to take that sock to the chin if what I am hoping for actually gets accomplished. So bear in mind that I will be watching closely and evaluating the efforts of the mods for each section with a critical eye. I don't expect miracles, and do realize that there is only so much you can do, but if this plan does not get results, I have good reason to just terminate it as another bad idea I had.
  5. This site gets around 1,100 visits by registered members every day. There is absolutely no reason at all why that shouldn't mean each member has cause to post at least one new message each day. I mean, they are here already, so why isn't there something they read that should prompt them for a response of some kind? Don't they have a question they would like to have answered? Don't they have an answer to some question someone else has asked? What will it take to get more people to participate?

Anyway, this may just wind up being another hare brained idea I have had that will flop badly. I have tried several times to get the discussion forums rolling by offering sponsorships and what not, and except for the leopard gecko forum, they are all just way under used. As such, this may very well be my last effort to get those forums going. If this fails, I will likely just terminate all underused discussion forums and be done with it.

When I originally set up HerpWantAds.com, I really wasn't inclined to have discussion forums at all beyond just the business side of this hobby/industry. But a lot of people requested them, so eventually I did put them in place. So really, I have no qualms at all about rolling back to my original vision of a business oriented site and be done with the general highly targeted discussion forums. ALL of the snake discussion forums would be rolled up into a separate single General Snakes Discussion Forum, and be done with it. I would consolidate things greatly to simplify the forum structure.

Anyway, just laying my cards out on the table.

Hi, Rich! I would love the opportunity to Mod the Cornsnake or Hognose discussion. My preference would be Cornsnake, but I am capable of handling either discussion position. I think this is a good idea, and hopefully we see things pick up all around in all of the sections you provide us!

OK, the response I have been getting for people to volunteer for the moderator positions has been excellent. I even see many of them going to the other forums and helping out in those forums with their posts as well. This is also excellent and very helpful for all involved. Hopefully this will build steam and really get things rolling in all of the discussion forums and we can really build a world class resource for everyone here.

I have had several people request positions in forums that were already taken by previous applicants. I am sorry, but at this time, except in really unusual circumstances, I only want to have one moderator per forum. Of course, if you have a convincing argument otherwise, throw it at me and I'll consider your side of the discussion. Along this same line of thinking, I want it noted that I do not really want to have to check in on the forums every day or three to see if the moderators are doing their primary job of kick starting the forum they have taken under their wing. But please note that if I see a few days to a week go by without any participation from the moderator for that forum, I will consider it as being abandoned, and anyone then requesting the moderator position for that forum will be strongly considered as a replacement.

So if you have your own personal or business issues come up that will legitimately keep you away from this site, please let me know about it. Perhaps even posting an "AWAY" notice stickied at the top of the forum to let myself and everyone else know what is going on may be wise. When the situation keeping you away ends, then you can simply delete the notice.

Thanks everyone.

I'm out in the field quite often, mostly overnighters or day trips, so for the most part I will be able to "check in" everyday, but I do try to get at least two trips a season that are from 3 to 7 days long. During that time I don't have internet access, so that was what I was going to do, leave a sticky letting everyone know, and hopefully those with an interest in field herping can help "mind the store" while i'm away.

When I first logged on this morning and checked new posts, there were a ton of new posts and not all in the LG Forum. I believe this is going to prove to be a success.

********Edit****************

Ok, maybe not a ton but well balanced between different forums over last few days.

I love the variety of this site, and if by me putting my elbow grease in, we can keep the current variety, then by ALL means please count me in as the new moderator of Feed, Caging, Supplies & Services!

I dont want to see this site turn into one of the every day, run-of-the-mill herp sites.

IM IN!

hey! i am probably wasting your time but if there is anything i can do to help this forum out please let me know! My knowledge of herps is very low & honestly i depend on alot of you to guide me so i'm not sure that i could do anything to help but just in case .... i'm here if you guys need me:)!

A few people have approached me about taking over the mod positions of some recently vacated spots. Please hold off until the dust settles. I would rather have things simmer down before making any further changes around here.

But thanks for asking.
