    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Gagging sounds and attitude change?

So, last night I woke up to a horrid sound that was similar to that of an animal forcefully regurgitating. I got up and turned on the light and the sound stopped and I wasn't sure who it was as I have more than one snake. A couple hours later, it happened again. I think I've figured out who it was but I don't understand it. I looked in the cage and there was A LOT of poop, so I cleaned it up and I tried to look at her but when I picked up the hide, she hissed at me forcefully. I was completely taken back, as none of our snakes, especially not this one, have ever hissed or shown any signs of aggression. I tried searching for other similar things online, and most that I found was RI or maybe she is hungry and making gurgling sounds? But I don't know how much of that is true. She doesn't have any signs of RI and she has been completely healthy up until last night. A week ago though when we fed her, I even posted on here because she was eating the mouse weird and everyone said that the food was too small. So maybe she is still hungry? Thought I don't know why this would cause gagging sounds and make her defecate so rapidly. I just wanted to ask your guys opinions on what this might be. Another thing is, her temps have dropped a bit recently because the landlord was putting the air conditioning on more often and I hadn't been told. I keep a computer on in my room so it stays warm but the air at night when I turn it off has been dropping. Thanks ahead of time guys.
 
are you sure where the sound was comming from? She may have been pooping and passing gas at the same time? I have had snakes make WEIRD noises when they poo?
 
me too once i was in my room and then i heard some nasty sound i was what the heck is that i hurried to my snake and it was one taking some nasty poo making the most weird nose i ever heard them do
 
I would have to second what Deobra said. I've experienced the same here, but the noise did NOT come from their mouth! LOL!

HOWEVER...

Whatever the noise was, coupled with the forceful hiss AND the eating "weird" AND the lower temps would lead me straight to the vet's office. If it is a RI (or anything else, for that matter), the quicker you get her in, the better. If it's not an RI, at least you'll get confirmation of that and rest easier. Right? Particularly if you have other animals that could be exposed.
 
My first thought would be RI as well, however is it possible that she just had a painful bowel movement and is a little pissy?
 
Probably snake farts :rofl: There has been a few times my fiance and I were awoken by a very loud sound, only to find it was snake farts.

Exactly! At least once a week, I'll be sitting at my computer late at night and hear gurglePPPPPBBBBBBBBTTTTTTT.... Thanks, guys. I really needed the sound effects. :ack2:

If you're worried about an RI, check her mouth. If there are lots of bubbles and saliva, it may very well be the early stages of an RI. Also, sitting with her mouth open for decent lengths of time or hearing weird sounds when she breathes are signs too.

I've had snakes hiss at me that never have before. I don't know if they're just in a not happy mood or if maybe I scared the crap out of them. :shrug01:

My guess is it was just a juicy turd. :ack2: But it never hurts to check!

Well, I must admit I feel rather stupid. I completely missed this sentence.

Carry on. As everyone else has said...probably a just some farting, the type of which I just heard. Ick.
 
Could the mouse have been 'Off"? I tried feeding my snakes day-old chicks, and the liquid poop (and sounds) were extremely traumatic for all of us.... :ack2:

By the way, I have managed to cure this by cutting the stomach cavity of (f/t I hasten to add) day old chicks and squeezing out what was left of the liquid yolk before I use them and my world is a much more pleasant place now..... :rofl:

What I heard didn't sound in any way like a snake. I actually thought there must be a cat or maybe a rodent trapped somewhere in my snake room and was squealing. You can imagine my surprise when we finally isolated the sound to a particular snake tub.

Ok fine. You all want to know my first experience w/this?! My 800g pastel female had a lil bit of stuck shed. I gave her a 20min soak in warm water. I brought her back to the snake room and gently removed the stuck shed. She then proceeded to take the nastiest &^%$ ever! Including all of the above mentioned sounds and associated nastiness. I had her on the carpet of the snake room by the way....ya. All I could do is watch in horror til she finished. 45min of gag inducing cleanup followed......Beat that!
 
Alright well, LOL to everything so far. I decided to put her out in a clean spot of the garage in her cage for the day in a warm place. I checked on her often and about 20 minutes ago, checked again after getting back from a friends house. I was able to remove her hide and even pick her up without a peep. I think it prolly was just some nasty poop. I'm moving the cages near a window to keep them warmer and keeping an eye on her but so far she seems fine. I've moved her into a smaller tank for the night and am going to forcefully scrub the other one down in the morning.

I'm really glad this hasn't turned out to look like RI. Like I said, she has had no signs of sickness and for sure no bubbling or anything at the mouth. I think she will feel better after resting some more for the night. And I really hope she has it all out of her system. Haha.

I had a ball that I rescued. Was trying to soak her cause she had stuck shed on her and she wasn't liking it. So I jumped in the shower with her, fully clothed of course... When I was pulling the sheddings off of her she didn't like my hands rubbing her and she proceeded to defecate.... Ugh!!

The hubby's begging me to...but I don't want to completely gag everyone out. Let's just say it wasn't the carpet...it was all over his shirt...twice.

Danielle, do you have heat for your snake of any kind? I ask because you mentioned moving her around to warmer places. I am super glad to hear you were able to pick her up without too much of a fuss and hope her tummy feels better after leaving you a mess!

I should add this happened over 10 yrs ago. I screamed like a lil preppy girl (no offense to anyone... I'm just not the kinds chick that screams)

My mother asked what's wrong.... "I just got pooped on!!!" My entire family busted up laughing.
