    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Getting a Tarantula

I have been wanting to get a tarantula for a long time and thought we would start with a rosehair (since I have been reading they are easiest to start with) I want to make sure I have everything that is needed a 10 gallon with heatpad secure top a hidey place a small water dish I want to make sure which is better the potting soil or the coconut fibers I use for my millipedes. I want to make sure all this is good for it.
 
No heating pad and organic potting soil. They like it drier and room temperature is fine, just keep them in the warmest room. I prefer a bigger water dish just for the sake of availability. Water dish also has to do with how big they are, mine is full grown but a baby could drown itself, so keep that in mind. Hope that helps. :)
 
As long as the soil has no fertilizers in it you can use most anything, Ed;s mixture is very close to what I use.
As far as a water dish put a sponge in it and soak the sponge so then you will have no worries about drowning.
Heat is a no-no so no pad necessary. They are comfy at 65-75 degrees, more towards the higher end.
 
Thank you for all the recommendations I will not be getting the heating pad several websites say too I want what is best for the spider . thank you so much for the advice
 
John, no offense intended here, but a sponge? Sponges kill. I read that they absorb to much bacteria. If it was me I wouldn't use a sponge. I'm against sponges. I had a friends Pink Toe die because of a sponge.
 
Have been useing sponges for many years with no adverse effects, but Im sure that there are many other ways to provide water. :)
 
What about using water crystals?

This way you don't have to worry about bacteria from a sponge and no drowning from water too deep.
 
Personally I don't like the chrystals as they are synthetic, just a preference here. As far as sponges go.... change them it is that simple. While they can be bacteria havens if they are changed they will be perfect. I have been using them for years with no ill effects so far so no offence taken :)
 
Peat Moss can be found at the places you mentioned or Wal Mart.

Sorry again John. :) Maybe my friends Pink Toe also died from being in a small Cricket Keeper when they are active and like to climb. DUH! I had just woken up, but maybe it was his sponge. I haven't had the sling experience yet. Ermac is and has always been a beast so no fears for drowning and our Pink Toe ,Jeff mists 1 to 3 times daily. Hes got a Hawks eye on that humidity gauge and he has two small bottle caps filled with water that aren't wide so she can't climb into them but they are the perfect height so she can drink! If it was me I know I would constantly change the sponge.
 
I always just used small water dishes (bottle caps and the like) on the small T's. An adult Rosehair should be fine with a larger dish, as long as it is fairly shallow.
 
One of my T's has a Pringle's tub lid, it wasn't happy with anything else I used. :rolleyes:
Another has a large tub with Sphagnum moss in, which I mist generously and she will go and sit in it to 'drink'.
Personally I don't use the gel and prefer sponge but its a personal preference.
