    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Gov. Charlie Crist is asking wildlife officials to begin trapping pythons right away, just as the state handles nuisance alligators.

He issued the call two weeks after a 2-year-old Central Florida toddler was strangled in her bed by a pet Burmese python measuring more than 8 feet long.

A spokeswoman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Pat Behnke, said about 10 hunters would be permitted initially. They will be allowed to begin hunting the snakes Friday, initially focusing on state lands south of Lake Okeechobee.
 
It is not a good solution, but you can't have an evasive species go unchecked and wipe out other native species. They are doing this for all the wrong reasons, the real reason should be to protect the native species.
 
This is crazy!!!

I myself have a two year old and have a redtail boa that is over six feet and believe me i got my fair share of phone calls after the little girl was killed. I understand we cant let the species go unchecked but i am from southeast Alabama and can tell you this has been an issue for awhile. How about they get a few guys to hunt the keepers that have no clue what they are doing too.

Opening a season on wild, invasive snakes is actually a great idea. Granted, they're doing this for all the wrong reasons politically, but environmentally let's not look a gift horse in the mouth. There's not enough funding for state or even private agencies to even put a dent in the wild population of snakes. Having more people out there on the ground spotting and removing snakes will be a great help actually, since they'll probably have to report the location, size, gender, and other parameters of the snake to the local department of natural resources. Not to mention that having people pay money to kill the things you want killed is a great way to fund future research to try and stem the problem of invasive species.

Don't be so quick to poo-poo hunters. Most of them know what they're doing. Like reptile owners, it's the bad ones that give all of us a bad name. Besides, snake tastes quite good from what I hear, so I doubt there will be any waste.
 
I'm just hoping they limit what they "trap" to non-native species. What will happen if they come across a nice EDB out there?

I'll be curious to see what the numbers on the first cull are...

I wasnt pooing the hunters im saying get some people to look for irresponsible reptile keepers. i agree that letting people hunt the non native is a fairly good idea.
