In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Last week I received my hatchling DBT. Very cute, very pretty. However the person I bought from sent along a hatchling red belly cooter, which I was not expecting but I am fine w/ keeping both. I worry about the red belly, it doesn't look like he/she has much for fat.

However, the red belly seems to be basking all the time and is alert. The DBT was swimming but is now basking a lot too. Neither have eaten but I figure they are still adjusting to their new home. From all the different research I have done the not eating seems normal as long as it doesn't last more than a week or 2. I got them last Thursday.

So far I haven't come across much as far as basking all the time. Just to tell you about their environment, they are in a 20L turtle tank. It's heated & at 80*, has a 501 Zoo Med canister filter. They have a basking area w/ a SolarGlo MV bulb-it's shared between the hatchlings and my box turtle. We keep the door of the room they are in shut, it stays warmer than the rest of the house that way.

Any help would be appreciated. If you have negative and bashing remarks do not even waste my time.

Thank you,

Liz

How were they shipped? Was the box insulated? 42 hour heat pack included? Who did you buy them from?
My hatchling DBT eat right out of the box (reported to me by my buyers), because they're shipped flawlessly.Try offering dried baby shrimp. No captive turtle can resist that!
I know one DBT seller (i say "seller" cause i don't even think he breeds them, but catches them) that tells people he ships overnight UPS, but then ships USPS sending extra turtles in case one or a few die, wrapping them in a pillow case.Non insulated boxes no matter how cold it is.
Is this how you got them?

Unfortunately they were not shipped w/ heat. They were cold when they arrived. The seller told me he sent me the red belly b/c he had so many left from what he had hatched. I bought them from Dave Sommers out of PA. I had done a search before I bought. I did see that someone that had bought from him was not happy. I had decided that I shouldn't buy from him. Then someone else posted they were happy with his turtles. I do read the BOI and support it. So I know it's my own fault for buying from him and don't need to be told that I shouldn't have bought from him.

We warmed them up slowly. I did buy mini dried krill and shrimp so I will attempt to feed them again.

I already knew who the seller was before even asking.
The good part is that if they die he will probably send you another 2 or 3 to keep you happy. The bad part is, turtles are not objects that you ship 10 out to get 2 healthy ones.
People keep buying from him cause of the cheap price, and that's sad.
Good luck.

I agree it is sad, if I could do it over I wouldn't have. I kinda figured you knew =) It wasn't so much that they were cheaper, he seemed really helpful. In all honesty I would not ask him to send me more, I don't want to have more cold little turtles arrive. I do regret buying from him, it was really a lapse in judgement to have bought from him.

So at this point do you think there's anything I can do for them?

Thank you,

Liz

Well, the DBT is eating, just like you said went right for the baby shrimp. So it's more the red belly that we are worried about. All he does is bask from we can tell.

Just keeps the temps high (around 82) and hope for the best. They're too small for antibiotics or any other treatment.
Hopefully they'll start eating soon.
