In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

I have questions on abbreviations meanings; HET, Possible HET, Proven, Holdback, BCI, BOI, I see many boas have the exact same latin names but have the difference of origin; Guyana Red Tail, Brazilian Red Tail..etcetera. Why is this? Are they that much different? Also does anyone know how the milksnakes got their names? How are they different than Kingsnakes that look the same? I know this is a lot of questions, can anyone recommend a book that explains all of the above? The 'bible' of snakes so to speak?
Thanks,
Nick

Het is short for heterozygous. An animal that's "het" for a certain recessive trait, carries half of the genetic code that would be required for for that trait to physically manifest itself in it's offspring.

Possible het means that there's a chance that the animal carries half of the genetic code necessary for the offspring to display a recessive trait. This occurs when you have a het X het or het X normal pairing. There's always a possibility that a het won't pass on it's recessive allele. For more clarification on this, you might want to check out this link:

If an animal is "proven" that means it has been paired up in a breeding which yielded offspring which were homozygous for a certain trait. Thus it's shown beyond doubt that it carries half of the genetic code for a recessive trait.

Homozygous means that an animal carries both halves of the genetic code necessary to visually manifest a specific recessive trait. Albinism is one of the more commonly known recessive traits in the reptile trade. A snake that is homozygous will always pass on it's half of the recessive genetic code to it's offspring. If an albino snake is bred to a normal snake, all of the resulting offspring will be considered het for albino.

As for the rest, I'm sure someone will come along and clean up my explanations and possibly pick up where I left off. I'm all typed out for right now.
