    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

high humidity problem (?)

my geckos are coming this thursday (i'm so excited!) and i've been getting the tank set up and checking temp/humidty. it's been really humid here in the philly area and the humidty reader in the tank is in the "tropical" zone at a little over 85%. i was under the impression that this is on the high side for leopard geckos. is this going to be a problem? is there anything i can do to lower it?

Can you describe your set up? Are you air conditioned at home? Do you have the heat on in the tank?
 
i have a 20 gal aquarium, using paper towels as substrate, have two hides (one on cooler side and one on hotter side), and a humid hide (tupperware with hole in side with coconut fiber inside). i don't have the light/heat for the tank on now. when i did have it on i hadn't set up the humid hide and humidity was ok. since i set up the humid hide with the coconut fiber the humidity went up a little over 5% (which seems natural). the temperature without the heat light on is around 80. as i said, it is probably a combo of the humid hide and the high humidity in the area, but i wasn't sure if it was a problem and what i could do to fix it. thanks

The humidity level should be around 20% since they are a desert species.

The humidty here outside is 60 or above most days some has reached 90% but that does not affect the himidity in my racks in my house. The humidity in the cages will be affected by the humidty in your home, maybe try a cooler room if the room you haev teh cage in now is in a hot humid room.

The humidity can also increase in the cage with low home humidity if you have too large of a water bowl or too large of a humid hide for the cage size, or a non vented top on the cage.
 
thank you for the help. unfortunately there's not another room i can move them to. the only thing i could try from the suggestions would be a smaller humid hide. since i'm getting two geckos i wanted it to be big enough for both of them. it's probably about 9 x 6 inch tupperware container now. how small do you think i could go?
 
Depends on the size of the geckos, they like a "tight" fit and a feel of the top of the hide on their back.

I use a 5" x 5" about 1.5" glad container for most of my sub adults to adults and a 2.5" round container 1" high for the babies and cut a size hold that is comparable to the leos size where the lid attaches and fill the bottom with coco fiber.
