Extremely rare, critically endangered, CBB young adult male high yellow-line Spider Tortoise (Pyxis arachnoides brygooi), hatched in mid 2019 in FL.
He has a great appetite and is eating all kinds of greens, collards, spring mix, opuntia cactus, hibiscus leaves, etc. plus necessary supplements.
He has been regularly getting daily soaks everyday, and is currently living in a spacious indoor enclosure with temp/humidity gradient, and abundant UVB light exposure.
Also during warmer months, he gets an hour of natural sunlight every other day in an outdoor closed playpen. He has been well loved so he’s super social and not shy at all. He sometimes roams freely around the house where he comes in contact with other people, my two dogs, cat, African Grey parrot, blue tegu, my other tortoise; and he’s completely acclimated to encountering other pet species.
He is the dream tort for many reptile enthusiasts around the globe, as they very rarely become available on the market, especially at this age when they are past the sensitive hatchling stage, and they’re now bulletproof.
However, given the conservation status of this species which is on the brink of extinction, it is only recommended to advanced hobbyists, or even better, to those who could use him in a breeding program, since he is now mature enough to breed.
Spider tortoises are one of the smallest and rarest tortoises in the world, an intricate species from Madagascar. Please do a lot of research to see if he is a suitable pet for long term.
