In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

A friend of mine has asked me to receive a shipment of snakes for him since he can't be available for delivery. No problem, BUT our temps here are brutal and I don't expect we'll really have a break in them for quite some time.

I REALLY don't want to risk the snakes going "on the truck" and have a local FedEx hub pretty close so can easily pick them up in the am. I have never picked up any packages that were held for pickup, is this a pretty foolproof way to ship? Do they have a history of putting things on the truck for delivery even though marked to hold for pickup?

These are valuable snakes...... waiting for the temps to drop below 90 won't probably happen until mid Sept. around here. I just want to make the trip as safe as possible for them and am very nervous about the heat.

We have regularly had shipments marked "HOLD FOR CUSTOMER PICK UP" for snakes for just that reason. We live out in the boonies, and we are always the last delivery of the day. We learned early on that we did not even qualify for the "before 10:30 a.m." deliveries.

Only once did we go to the hub to find that the shipment had been put on the truck. Since we were there at 9:00 a.m. when the customer service counter opened, the shipment hadn't been on the truck that long. They called the driver and he returned immediately for us to get our package.

Cathy,

It's a pretty straight forward procedure and you shouldn't have a problem in picking the package up. You mentioned this is quite a valuable shipment. If he is an approved shipper the contents of the package will more than likely be declared. If I were you I would open the package right there in the parking lot (with your camera to take pictures) to make sure the animals arrived safe and sound. In the event of any DOA and even when FedEx is not liable, you might find a FedEx employee that might act as a witness and vouch for the condition of the snakes upon arrival. You don't want to go home, find out something's wrong there, and have to explain it later to your friend. At least that's the way I would handle it as it's quite a responsibility on your part.

Regards.

Cathy,
If the shipper will be doing the shipping paperwork online, have your friend make sure that the delivery address is listed as that of the receiving hub and that "Hold for Pickup" is noted in the special instructions. It is also a good idea to clearly mark the package itself as "Hold for Pickup"

Once these procedures are followed, it is rare that you would have any problems. FedEx has been a very reliable shipper for me.

Right.
whether filling out online or using FedEx paperwork (manually), there is a "Hold For Pickup" box to check. Then give the address of the receiving hub. (If this is not the main local facility that gets the packages from the airport, there will still be truck time as it travels from the sort facility to yours). This is my preferred method when receiving packages, and my FedEx has never missed (unlike DHL and UPS, which always seem to put the boxes on a truck to somewhere, and finding it/getting it back to the facility seems to take til 4pm most of the time GRRRRRRRR)

*of course, there are regional differences in service, and things might go differently with the providers in your area*

Yes! I forgot to mention that and it's a must! We usually ask the shipper to write in big bold letters "hold for pick-up" at least in a couple of sides of the box.

Regards.

Thanks so much for the feedback guys!! It really is a relief... and a heads up for me in the future for other shipments coming in FedEx. I've received most shipments Dash, and would easily go the extra mile to ensure safe delivery.

FedEx has a major hub very close to me... heck, much closer than the airport for Dash! I also really like that they can drop the package off in the evening and have most of the travel time being done at night. I'll definitely take the camera with me for pick up!! Great, great input :IThankYou
