    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

hey i caught what i think skink in montana and brought him home to my house in spokane valley WA but i dont have a cage so hes in a bin with paper towels for bedding a few rock places to hide and a place to hide with some wet moss he has a couple of sticks and i have a heat lamp from my anoles but i dont have it on the cage because idk if he need it. so is this ok.

Looks like a Northern Alligator lizard.

I'd set it up with UVB lighting (required), and a temperature gradient of 70 on the cool side and an 85F basking spot.
Drop the temperature to room temp at night.

It will need the requisite vet check to rid it of internal parasites, of course, since it's wild caught. Mites are also common in the species. You probably shouldn't have taken it, as it's listed as a 'species of concern' in Montana. In many States, taking reptiles from the wild requires a fishing or small game license, and some species cannot be taken. Not sure what Montana's laws are.

Diet is the usual calcium-dusted insects. Offer water in a shallow bowl, but mist daily as well to provide drinking water. A 20-gallon aquarium or similar-sized cage seems to be the usual recommendation for this species, 10 gallon being considered too small.

The bedding, hides, and damp moss area to aid shedding all sound good for the animal in question. (Paper towel is an especially good idea, as diligent attention to hygiene will be necessary while the parasites are dealt with--you'll probably need to frequently discard and replace any wood items, and wash and sterilize other items while you go through the deparasitizing process).
