BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) - Just like getting your oil changed every few thousand miles or going to the dentist at least once a year, you also need to do a little routine maintenance on your computer. Almost half of all computers in the US are infected with malicious programs. But a new survey shows that most people think their computers are clean.
The survey by office supply chain Staples found that 83% of those asked are confident their computer isn't affected by malware. But the researchers say that most people falsely believe their computers are protected when most are vulnerable, or even worse, already infected.
Nearly all of the respondents use their computers everyday. But less than half back up their files at least once a week, a step experts say is critical in case your computer crashes. Most people are comfortable with performing their own maintenance, but the fact of the matter is, they just don't do it often enough or don't have up-to-date versions of protection programs.
Of those who said they are not comfortable running their own maintenance, 56% say they'd rather wait in line at the DMV or sit in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Staples obviously recommends its own products to protect computer users. But there are a variety of free options on the internet that work just as well.
