    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

I assume you meant that the snakes were $250.00 PLUS SHIPPING or 2/ $500.00 shipped. In that case, I think you can consider it to be free shipping. After all, he wants $250.00 per snake and you are giving him $250.00 per snake and you are not paying anything extra to get them shipped to you. He is picking up the tab to get them to you. I would think a decent seller would be willing to knock off some for a local pickup, but I personally don't think it is required. I also don't think that automatically means that shipping wasn't free in the first case if you do pick them up.

If I am selling a snake in my store for X amount and someone in california wants it I will charge them X amount plus the shipping cost. Depending on the details of the deal I may decide to be a nice guy and say its X amount with free shipping. Now if they tell me they will be vacationing in WI next week and they want to pick it up I don't think I should have to knock off the shipping cost just because they are picking the snake up. After all, I am charging them what I would charge any individual who walks in off the street. Obviously, if they were to pay shipping if I in fact shipped it, I wouldn't charge them if they picked it up. But if I was offering to pay the shipping, I would not feel obligated to knock anything off if they decided to pick it up. Like I said, it depends on the details. It makes a diffrence if it is a $25.00 corn snake or a $400.00 green tree python.

If the animal is offered for $250 shipped and shipping costs $30, as a buyer I would appreciate a $30 rebate if I'm picking it up. It has happened to me more than once in the past. An animal was offered for a certain amount shipped. I requested that I wanted to pay for shipping charges ($70) on my side (billed to my account) and thus deduct this amount from the price. It makes sense particularly in internet sales as: 1. You don't have to send the $70 upfront 2. You assure the animal is going to be shipped according to your carrier of choice as there is no additional money to be made by shipping via a cheaper carrier, 3. You can set-up the pick up date/time from your computer/telephone once agreed with the seller. After all if the seller was going to pay for the shipping (thus included in the price) why should the buyer be charged for shipping if he is actually going through the inconvenience of picking the animal up?

But if I have the animal for sale for $250.00 in my store. And that is what I am selling it for (to the guy in California, or the guy who walks in off the street) would you then expect me to knock off the cost of shipping to anyone, since I do not have to ship it, even if they lived across the street. The animal costs $250.00. I will not charge you for shipping because I'm trying to be a nice guy, but if you decide to pick it up I don't think the shipping charge should be expected to be deducted. I'm not saying I wouldn't give some sort of deduction, just that it shouldn't be expected or required.

Its a different story if I have the animal for sale at $250.00 in my store, and tell you it will be $275.00 shipped. Then if you come to pick it up, yes I would deduct the $25.00 because it was in fact the shipping cost added to the price of the animal. In the first case however, the shipping cost was not added to the price of the animal, rather it was deducted from my profit at my choosing.

As you very well said it would be a completely different story if your price is already set at $250 at the store. My example was only if it was $250 shipped, as in an internet sale. In that case it is reasonable for the buyer to expect a rebate if he is actually picking it up or paying for shipping himself.

Above is an example posted earlier today of what I like in an ad. The seller is asking for $3,000 for both snakes shipped. It is obvious he is adding maybe between $30 and $70 for shipping depending on the carrier to be used. The total for shipping is approximate 1 or 2.5% of the asking price. He could have said $2930 plus shipping but he included it on the price instead. If someone was to contact him and proposed to pay shipment ($70) it stands reason that the price for both should be $2930.
