I gave my wife herps
This topic sparked my interest today and the more I have been thinkin about it and looking for info the more concerned I have been getting. I have an adult Leucy Rat and a sub adult Black milk, both females. I dont really have plans to breed. Maybe the black milk as I do have a male the same size (but thats a ways off as they are 07's and only around 43 inches each).
But can they (female snakes) become egg bound even without a mate or mating (all my snakes are in separate cages)? I just have been seeing so many threads online here and there about people losing their females to egg binding and I dont want that to happen to my girls.
So is there anything I can do (or not do) to help prevent it (not mating them is obvious, I am speaking of the chance they get egg bound without being bred)?
Are the chances high or is it a pretty uncommon occurrence? I just wanna be safe is all and do whatever I can to keep it from ever being an issue. I do know about letting them have room to move around to exercise, not breeding snakes too young, not power feeding, and things like that. Like I said I dont plan to breed but I may try the black milks...that would be at least a couple years from now if I did though.
And feeding once a week isnt considered power feeding is it? They have usually passed their prior meal by the time they eat again each week. Thanks for any insight or advice anyone has time to give!
