Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

can a bearded dragon and a horned mountain lizard aka horny toad live together.i was just wondering becuz we have a large cage and we wanted to see if they would be friends.

another question is that why isnt my horny toad not eating im getting him a bigger cage today and wen i gave him harvester ants he just let them walk all over him.. is he just getting used to them.

also he is a baby he is about the size of a quarter..

plz help me

thx,
andrew

It s best not to put two beardies together, much less mix species, especially two species that are so vastly different in size. The beardie would eventually eat the horned lizard. So no. Absolutely not okay to house a beardie and a horned lizard together.

On the horned lizard not eating, how do you have it set up?
Do you have a hot basking spot? What is the basking surface temp? What are you using to measure the basking surface?
Do you have a cool side? What is the temp at the cool end?
Are you using UVB?
Do you have plenty of hides in the tank, and most of the outside of the tank covered to reduce stress?
Are the ants too big for that baby?
Do you have it in a high traffic, noisy area?
Are you handling it?
Have you read a few care sheets?

no. dont house them together. just keep them seperated. and try feeding him crickets. make sure you dust them with vitamins/calcium dust

ok i wont put them together... and he has started to eat the harvester ants but he is just a baby and he seems to only really want 1 a day so is that good

im pretty experinced with reptiles so i no how to care for him but anyway he is a baby and he has started to eat the harvester ants but he seems to only want to eat one a day he just eats them then he burrows and goes to sleep. is this proper for him to do this iv had other lizards but never a horned mountian lizard baby. iv had an adult horned mountain lizard and he acted perfectly fine. but the baby seems to act differnt.

Since you obviously won't discuss your husbandry with me, then you need to discuss it with someone who knows more than either of us about HLs or the baby will die. No, it is not good that the baby is only eating an ant a day, and it will die soon if you don't fix whatever is wrong with your set up or it.

im going to move him into a big tank once we move into our new house he has a hide away and i have a heat lamp and uv lamp. he loves to bask in the heat and the uv but wen i put a ant in he is either interested in it or he is afraid.
he loves to burrow himself into the ground and run around. but i want to feed him but he wont eat more than one ant. should i put like 5 or 6 into hes habitat???

You need to discuss his setup and care with an experienced person or group or he will die. He has already gone days without eating well, and I cannot stress how fast they go down hill and how just a small husbandry issue can kill these lizards. You cannot guess at their temps, you must make sure they are not stressed, and you cannot let them go days without eating well without doing something about it or they will die. They are not hardy in these ways like other lizards. PLEASE contact one or both of the contacts that I listed above.

i just did band i no how fragile he is but i want to no should i put in more ants and see if he will eat them

I cannot answer that unless you answer the questions that I asked of you. If your husbandry is off, then no, he will not eat.

What type UVB bulb are you using?

1)its in his tank with everything thats usually in there in there.
2)yes on the top of his hideaway is were he basks. i also have a heater underneath the tank to keep it like is desert. i havent mesured it but its about 70 80 or maybe even 90 heat lamp.
3)under his hide away and on the other part of the tank. its pretty kool in those spots.
4)its a halo uv bulb and in the middle of the halo is the heating bulb.
5)there is only one hide away becuase we r moving and he cant go in the big tank that we hav for him until we move.
6)its not covered but its in my room which is the quitest place in the house. nobodys goes in there and i dont really do anything in there.
7)im not sure
8)no its not in a high traffic area.
9)i only handle it when i have 2
10)iv been reading alot about them and the ants

there iv answered all ur questions

Andrew, the trouble could very well be your temps. You cannot guess at them. If you don't get them straightened out soon, then he will not make it to the new house. If you have the basking surface temps too low, then he cannot digest his food and won't eat. If you have the temps too high, then he will get dehydrated and not eat or will stay buried to avoid the heat. You will not succeed with him if you don't get a good thermometer, either an infrared temp gun or a digital thermometer with a probe and make sure that your basking SURFACE temps are 108-110, and that he has a cool side in the upper 80s. Do not use a stick on thermometer because they are not accurate enough.

I don't have a clue what kind of UVB bulb that is. Is it a mercury vapor bulb? Can you tell me the brand name?

Please go to the forum that I posted. I don't know why you resist doing that if you really want to do what is best for him. You need to join that forum and discuss his care with people who have been keeping these lizards successfully. They are the most difficult lizard to keep in captivity and he will die if you don't set him up properly.

Please go to this web site. Do some more reading. Join the forum. Contact the forum founders. Then if it isn't already too late for the little guy, you can learn how to get him to thrive.

i am releasing him back to were i found on my property so that he can ave a better life. the only reason why i had him is becuz one of the dogs was trying to kill him so i took him in. but i think it would be best if i put him back.

My wife and I acquired a baby horned lizard last year. We learned the hard way how problematic these reptiles can be in captivity.

First off, nearly all horned lizards are wildcaught. Even if you set them up properly and can get a regular supply of harvester ants, these lizards rarely acclimate well into captivity. Stress and handling can become lethal factors in their chances for survival.

It is definitely best that you are releasing it back into its native environment. I suggest doing so as soon as possible.

im pretty experinced with reptiles so i no how to care for him

I beg to differ. If you are so experienced and "no" how to care for him, why are you asking all these questions?:shrug01:

...not to mention you did not know how bad of an idea it was to mix it with a bearded dragon. Not to beat the dead horse, but mixing species of any kind is not recommended.

Taking into account your grammatical skills in addition to tone of your posts so far, Andrew, I'm going out on a limb and assuming that you're fairly young (still teens, maybe?). Asking questions is perfectly fine; it shows that you want to learn, and most anyone on this forum is happy to help in any way they can.

But supplementing your curiousity with the claim that you are so experienced only detracts from your credibility and makes it sound like you do not want to implement any advice given.

I hope you've learned your lesson with wildcaught animals, and I wish you luck with your future endeavors in the reptile hobby.

yes i am a teen but we pwn many lizards and snakes. my mother was wondering if she could put him in with the bearded dragon just for a couple days while we were moving. i told her it wouldnt be good but she insisted that i ask the question. throught my life i have been intrested with repitles and read about them and we i get older i want to become a herpatologist. i set up the tank for the horned lizard and since our thermometer is broken i couldnt test the tempeture. we live far from a store so we couldnt just go buy one again. i decided to realese him since i thought it would be best for him. the grammical errors are becuase im trying to hurry up becuase im very busy. im a very smart person i get straight A'S and im in all honors classes. i have owned a horned lizard adult befor and he lived for around 3 or 4 years. but te baby was acting differnt so i had questions.
