Madison County resident, Dale Sargeant, not only lost his home to a devastating fire on September 7, 2001, but also his two beloved Axanthic Burmese Pythons, which were valued at $100,000. The two rare reptiles are the only two known living examples and are considered exotic.
In a bizarre twist, the expensive snakes reportedly killed in the house fire, turned up at a national reptile show in the possession of David Bryan Lawson, 37, of Zephyrhills. Lawson was developed as a suspect when he was found to be in possession of the Axanthic Burmese Pythons. Lawson reportedly could not provide any proof of ownership, and he also provided conflicting statements to Madison County Sheriff's Investigator Mark Joost concerning how he acquired the animals.
Investigator Joost arrested Lawson and charged him with grand theft, which is a first-degree felony.
Additional charges against Lawson are pending review by the State Attorney's Office as the investigation continues.
Sargeant's python collection has been inventoried and documented by Investigator Joost to facilitate positive identification and to deter any possible theft attempts.
Sargeant said that it is too early in the investigation to give a statement at this time because he said his hands are tied in the matter.
As far as the house fire at the Sargeant residence, the State Fire Marshall could not determine whether there was foul play involved in the blaze or if it burned by other causes.
