Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

As I told ya all before my male leo, Tyson had parasites. Well I picked up his medication on monday and had taken my female, Gloria in to the vet to get her dewormer. We gave both of them the measured out doses, but Tyson failed to hold down the meds as he did also the AD the night before. He was still alive but not moving around very much last night around 9p.m. I left the room came back around 10 to feed the two of them when I noticed that Tyson's sides were sunken in. I was devastated. Tyson was a birthday gift to my son in January. My son it visiting his dad this week and doesn't know yet that Tyson has died. I'm not so much looking forward to telling him when he comes home on Friday. But now I have another problem. Gloria is being very subdued. She hasn't eaten anything since I gave her the meds on monday, which was all she had was the meds. I'm getting worried. Is she sad that Tyson is gone, or is she just under the weather because of the meds that were given to her? My fiance wants to get another male as soon as possible to keep her company, but I'm not sure that this is the right thing to do or not. Not only tha but we did some phoning around and no one in the city has any leos available right now. I don't know what to do, I'm afraid of losing Gloria.
I don't want to force feed her because she doesn't care for that at all. She gets pretty uptight when you try sticking the syringe down her throat. But if I have to I will.
Any other suggestions about what I can do to make her happy again?

NO! Don't get another one yet. Leos do perfectly well alone and don't need the socialization that dogs and people do. You have to make sure this one is ok first.

As far as making her happy again, try giving her some space...she's probably very stressed about the medication, the trips to the vet, excessive handling, etc. Just let her be for a few days and offer her regular food and water. You can also try warming her enviroment a little more to entice her to eat more. But, most importantly, once all her needs are met, leave her alone. She's had a lot of changes lately, including losing her cagemate, and it might take her a couple weeks to spring back.

I'm so sorry!

I'm so sorry about Tyson, and I don't envy you having to tell your son. Sybella is right... this is not the time to get another one. Wait and see what is going on with Gloria first. I also agree that you should try to leave her alone, and please do not force-feed her. This will only stress her out more and only add to her upset. If you need to get some food in her, just put a drop on her nose and let her lick it as you squeeze out a little more at a time. This way, she will have some control over how much she can swallow as well as stimulate her to feed. If it's the taste of the A/D she doesn't like, add some vanilla Ensure to it, or better yet, use some of the Sandfire Gargoyle Gecko MRP.

What is the diagnosis and medication the vet gave you?

I am so sorry to hear that, I would hate to tell my daughter something like that, too.
I hope it goes ok as it can.:(

I am curious about the diagnosis/ meds/dosage too.

Sorry for your loss.

I was curious as well what the diagnosis was. What meds were perscribed?

dosages, diagnoses & meds

First of all Tyson was given something by the vet on Saturday; unsure what exactly it was, she administered it to him in the back. Then I took Gloria to her on Monday and she gave her the same thing that she had to Tyson. The vet phoned in a prescription to the pharmacy for Metronidazole; 0.33MG(0.23ML) for Gloria and 0.33MG(0.1ML) for Tyson, to be given now and then a second syringe in 14 days. The vet had did a fecal exam on some samples that I brought her in. The poops were not very fresh, all I could get for an appointment that wasn't until 3 pm. I also explained to her that I was unsure of who's poop was whose. After she did the test she said that there was some evidence of, I think she called it pin worms. But, she also said that it could be something else that was more serious. The only way to find out was to do a blood test, but that Tyson was to small (11 grams) to try and get some blood.
At first she wasn't going to have Gloria take the Metronidazole, but then decided that it probally would be a good thing just in case. In light of what has happened with Tyson I'm almost afraid to give any more of this medication to Gloria. I know it's silly to think that it was the meds that killed him, but I'm grieving and I need to blame someone or something. I'm also mad at the pet store owner that sold us Tyson. When we first started noticing that there was something wrong, we asked the owner about what could we be doing wrong or give us some suggestions on what we can do. After we bought Tyson, this pet store owner just didn't seem to know anything about leopard geckos at all. Like for instance when we went in to buy Tyson he asked us how big our tank was. When I told him that it was 33 galons, he said that it was too small of a tank to keep two geckos in. Am I wrong to say that in a 20 galon tank you can house one male and up to three females? Now he might of just been trying to sell me a bigger tank, but most importantly I think he just doesn't know what he's talking about. Needless to say his expertise has strayed me away from ever buying from him again.
Thanx to all of you's whom let me vent and for your sympathy.
Do you think I should continue with the meds to Gloria?

Sounds like he was trying to sell a bigger tank................to you!!!
as for the meds, you'll have to wait for someone who has experiance with Metronidazole to give that advise.
just one article on this drug, I would do a search for more info.

High doses or long-term administration of metronidazole can cause peripheral neuropathy with sensory disturbances e.g. at the hands and feet. Neuropathy is often only slowly reversible or not reversible at all. Neutropenia can also develop. Metallic taste in the mouth, nausea, upper abdominal pain or headaches sometimes occur following usual therapeutic doses. Convulsions, ataxia, skin problems (skin rashes, urticaria), and vaginal candidiasis are not as common. Isolated cases of pancreatitis, cystitis, mucous colitis and hemolysis have been observed. Mutagenic effects have been observed in animal experiments; no carcinogenic effect has yet been demonstrated in humans

Now that you only have one lizard in the cage, you should take fresh fecal sample in as soon as possible. Then, you'll be able to see where to go from here based on what is actually wrong with Gloria. That's the route I would take, before administering any more medication.

Mentrondazole is flagl I beleve.

I am not good at figureing these out but for a 60 gram female the at 100mg/ml / .02ml would be the dosage I think.

You know Marcia is really great at figuring these out I sure she will respond soon, I am really going just by memory, I can't find a thread I as looking for tha t had alot of info and doses.

Flagyl

First off, Flagyl (metronidazole) is not for treating pinworms. It is used to treat flagellate protozoans, which is a completely different type of parasite altogether. Panacur is used for treating pinworms. In either case, I don't understand what a blood test would show, because both of these affect the GI system and show up in the feces.

Now as far as the doses, the 'theraputic' dose of Flagyl and Panacur is 50mg/kg of body weight. A 60 gram gecko weighs 0.06 kg, and assuming the concentration of the medication is 100:

25mg (dose) x 0.06kg (weight) = 1.5 divided by 100 (concentration)
or
50mg (dose) x 0.06kg (weight) = 3 divided by 100 (concentration)

... means the proper dose of this medication for a 60 gram gecko is 0.015 - 0.03ml, NOT 0.3ml.

dosage given, was it wrong...?

I'm not quite understanding the dosage information that you gave me. It almost sounds to me that the dosage was too much for both of my leos. Gloria was weighed in at 26 grams and Tyson was weighed at 11 grams.
As for having to tell my son that Tyson died, it was really hard. He cried all night along with my other two children. We had a funeral for him, said a few prayers and made him a tomb stone, that each of the kids wrote a message for Tyson on. Every day since then Ricardo has gone outside to Tysons' grave to say hello. It's been pretty tough for him, he wants another leo right away and wants to name it Tyler. Ricardo has twin friends at school that are named Tyson and Tyler. We explained to him that it would be best for now that we didn't get another gecko right away until we know for sure that Gloria is not sick. And we hope to find one that is closer to a year old. But for now we will wait.

Thanx Sybella for your kind words, and I think that I will go out and get him a stuffed leo, I just wished that I had a picture of Tyson though.
Took the advice and brought in a new fecal sample to the vet, hopefully should hear from her by tomorrow. Will keep you posted, and I'm crossing my fingers that Gloria is fine. In the meantime she's still not eating. I misted around her last night and seen that she was licking the water off her basking rock. Hopefully she gets hungry soon though.
