    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I just got a striped devil scorpion, or a vaijonis spinigerus in latin, and im wondering if anyone can answer some questions. first ill tell you what i know. I know that their temperature should range from 85-90 degrees farenheit, that they should have 50% humidity (which i dont know how to tell if its at 50% or how to get it there) and i know that they need a cave/hideout to stay in. is there anything i am missing in their care and can anyone with a similar scorpion please help.

If you don't get an answer from someone here a good place to start is with an internet search.
Use your favorite browser/search engine, put the Latin name in the window for the search, and read what you can of the natural history of this animal. You should be able to get much of the information you need from that.

In order to know what the humidity level is inside the cage you have to get an hygrometer. It is an instrument that measures humidity. They make many kinds and your local pet store should have them. Sometimes you can find hygrometers at hardware and houseware stores too.

50% is in the normal range. Indoor winter air can be much drier than this. Light bulbs dry out the substrate and air pretty substantially too. You can't leave a white light on 24/7. Scorpions are nocturnal.

You raise the humidity with a simple plant sprayer. Spray the substrate only as often as necessary to raise the humidity into the needed range. This could be once a day, twice a day or less often. If you spray inside one of the hides, it will maintain the humidity longer than those areas of the cage that are exposed to the air. If you are using a rock, the rock can be soaked in water then put back into the cage. You'd still have to do this every day in addition to spraying.

Also, the type of substrate you are using will affect humidity. Sand will be dry, coconut, peat or other plant based substrate will hold moisture better and longer.

What are you using to provide heat?

im using a heat lamp to provide heat and i would also like to know how long that you would suggest to keep the lamp on because since i got him/her, still dont know yet, he/she has been in its cave. I will start misting the cage and the cave like you said and I'll do a web research for further info. thank you very much for your help
 
What usually becomes a concern with heat lamps is that they tend to really dry things out. Also, if it is regular white light you can't leave it on 24/7 because scorpions are nocturnal and having a bright light on without respite is VERY stressful and abnormal for them. The red or black/blue heat bulbs are fine to have on round the clock.

You can put a flat rock or flat piece of tile or brick directly under the bulb. The rock or tile will absorb heat and give the scorpion a hot spot to access if it wants. Same idea as for terrestrial lizards and snakes.

Everything I have read says not to put heat pads/mats UNDERNEATH the cage. They should be attached to a wall or side. Reason being that terrestrial inverts burrow to escape heat. To accommodate this normal instinct don't put heat under the substrate.

We had an Emperor that never seemed to come out of it's cave either. But, it obviously was coming out and being quite active at night because the water dish accumulated substrate and had to be washed out often. You might have to stay up at night and watch quietly to see it come out.
