    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Infertile Clutches?

I have a really pretty red girl named Ember who recent threw an infertile clutch of eggs. I got the eggs strewn out over nearly a week. I couple here a couple there. All infertile.

My question is:

Will she keep throwing clutches?

Should I expect another clutch again from her?


If so would it be possible to put her with a male to turn them from non fertile to fertile clutches or once she throws infertile it will stay infertile?


It just seems a shame to have such a gorgeous red female throw infertile clutches.

Hi Wayne, if you put her with a male, you should get fertile clutches. She is a beautiful dragon ! Also, from the you see the first egg you lying in the cage, get a nest box ready immediately, some females can become frantic without one because their instinct is to deposit the eggs in a nice " safe " place, so without one they can become egg-bound and stressed out. I assume you didn't know she was full of eggs. Usually they start scratching around the cage looking for a spot, and won't eat for a few days prior to laying although occasionally the will eat up to laying time, but rarely is this the case.

So will she throw another clutch then? If she threw an infertile clutch then another is on the way correct? So I might as well put her with a male and have him seal the deal.

I have an incubator hatchright and deli cups on the way should be here tomorrow. I will get a nestbox ready asap for them.

Yes, she will almost certainly produce more eggs....by the way, be sure to feed as much as she wants to eat, including all the insects she wants to eat. She will need every bit that you give her, lots of everything to keep her weight up. Calcium supplementation as well. Egg-laying is no problem for big healthy dragons.

Good looking dragon! If she's throwing infertile clutches, than that means that she's physically ready to breed and produce, isn't it?
 
Prior to mating her there are a few things to seriously consider. First, are you properly set up to house and care for any possible offspring? Secondly and just as important, producing eggs is an obvious drain/strain on a dragons system. Being that she has already produced an infertile clutch and that more are possibly on their way an immediate breeding with a male will not change the circumstance of any eggs already developing. Breeding her now may have the potential to create fertile eggs in the near future but may also lead to extending her breeding cycle, which will tax her system further and possibly longer. Personally, I would not mate her at this stage. Let her run her course with laying as it stands and consider mating at some point in the future and only if you are ready to properly care for any offspring. Just my 2 cents. Best of luck.

Definitely good to think about what to do when the babies come....lots of work and expense involved. They grow FAST and eat voraciously, and then you have to be able to sell, find homes. So some very good food for thought brought out. She will produce fertile eggs if put with a male after an infertile clutch, the only exception would be if the male fails to complete the breeding or the rare instance that he is infertile.
 
I was not suggesting that she would not lay fertile eggs if bred, Merely that (as the OP only said “recently”) there is the possibility that further eggs could already be developing and mating her now will not likely turn already developing un-fertilized eggs into fertilized ones after the fact. Choosing to breed her now is up to the OP, I was just stating some simple facts as what to be aware of regarding her health. To each their own. All the best.
