Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I saw an ad in the kingsnake classifieds for a very nice, clean looking baby male BCI for $185 shipped. When I e-mailed Inner City Reptiles about him, they said that he was on sale that week only for $150 shipped, so I called them to discuss. They said he was about 1 ft long, eating, healthy, and had a good temperment. They said they would ship him overnight with heat packs to me here in Maine. I decided to buy with Paypal, and they said they would ship him out on Thursday.

I then got an e-mail from the breeder telling me that they had *just* noticed that he was too thin, and they didn't want to ship him. They offered to hold him and feed him up for a few weeks and then ship, or I could take another baby that they had in stock (I had been told in a previous phone conversation that he was the only baby they had). They said that someone had been feeding him mice that were too small, but that they had switched him up to *fuzzies* now, and he should put on weight, if I still wanted him (it's my understanding that baby BCIs can eat adult mice right off the bat) I was worried about the animal's health through shipment, too, so I accepted the substitution of another baby male BCI, even though the animal wasn't nearly as nice as the one I originally paid for (pictures of both were provided). I want a pet, not a breeder, so I decided to go for it. They said they would ship him out Friday for delivery on Saturday.

Saturday rolled around and he didn't arrive. I went to the Fedex website to track him, and the estimated arrival day according to Fedex was Monday, 3-17!! That means he would be in transit all weekend! I called Fedex immediately to figure out what was going on, since I was told he would arrive on Saturday. Fedex told me he had been shipped at 9pm Friday, overnight shipping, but that Saturday delivery had not been specified, so overnight delivery meant next business day delivery. I was very concerned because heat packs don't last that long, so I told Fedex that the box contained a live animal, and asked if there was any way he could be shipped in the cab of the truck and kept in warm areas overnight, because otherwise he would be DOA. That's when I learned that FEDEX DOES NOT ALLOW THE SHIPMENT OF LIVE ANIMALS!! The breeder should have known this!!!

Fedex has been very nice about this, however, since I was unaware, and promised to flag the box and do their best to keep him warm. Immediately after contacting Fedex, I called Inner City Reptiles to discuss everything with them, and plan what to do in case the boa was DOA. According to their answering machine, I called during business hours, but no one picked up. They have not returned my call since then (I called Saturday night, as I write this it is Monday morning)

The snake arrived this morning. He was ice cold, curled into a knot, and was starting to turn upside down. There was only one tiny heat pack in the box with him. The snake was put on a heat mat, and massaged vigorously. He is now moving around and behaving normally. I have Fedex to thank for his live arrival.

I will never again buy from Inner City Reptiles. They alomost killed this poor baby BCI with their recklessness, and still have not answered my phone call to account for their actions!

Sorry about your exprience. had a pleasant dealing with them and everything went smoothly. I hope your snakes turns out ok. If you can help it never set up shipping after Thursday. Due to all the bad that can happen if a package is not delivered on sat. that means it will sit hwere ever.. Rule of thumb Monday thru Thursday. As for shipping via Fed Ex, Ups, Airborne they all have rules regarding live animals. Everyone from Big name breeders to no name breeders use one of the above (yes i know 2 or 3 use Airlines). Very few have approval via Delta Dash for shipping and most reptiles shipped aren't worth the 65.00 or more cost of using them (meaning i'm not paying 65.00 for a 30.00 snake or lizard). Very few people would be selling or buying via internet if those shippers weren't used..
Again i hope your snake recovers fully and at the very least Inner City Reptiles (if they did something wrong) will contact you and offer some kind of apology or shipping cost refunded..
Good Luck..

YOUR LUCKY!!

You are lucky the snake is alive. The one mistake you made was to accept a shipment on a friday for saturday delivery - live anmals should NOT be shipped at the end of a week because of the risk of it being stuck over the whole weekend and ending up dead.

Inner city reptiles should NEVER of shipped this animal on a Friday and that just shows VERY POOR business skills on their part.

No one with any real credability ships animals on a Friday - just plain wrong!

I am glad you have a healthy animal and fedex did a great job! Hope he continues to do well!

Boa switch

I've watched this story unravel on another site. They sent her a snake she didn't pay for in the first place. I think she should be refunded all costs and sent the right snake.

Inner City Reptiles

Victoria,

I suggest my rule to live by: never accept any shipping plans other than shipping on Monday or Tuesday for delivery Tuesday or Wednesday, period. Any reputable dealer/breeder would never think of shipping a live snake out on a FRIDAY. Also, in cold weather I insist on 40 or 60 hour heat packs. I am glad you posted this, I've thought about buying from them a couple times, but not now. Inner City obviously does not care about their animals. Thanks, and good luck with your baby.

I'm really sorry to hear about your problems with this deal, but I'm glad the snake made it alive. Quite frankly, if you saw all of those red flags (the inconsistant stories, the lack of husbandry knowledge on the seller's part, etc.), I wonder if you cannot now see that you should have just asked for a refund when that first animal could not be shipped? Hindsight is 20-20 though, isn't it? Hopefully, this company will make some restitution of shipping charges to you.

This is why I never ship past Wednesday. As for the FedEx policies, we all no that they "officially" do not accept live animals, but most of us have permission from our local site managers to ship what we do. If We could not ship via FedEx, Airborne, or UPS, there would be no more internet sales, for all practical purposes.

After reading this thread I dont see how any blame could fall on victoria. It appears she did everything in her power to make a smooth transaction. I think pointing the blame in her direction at all is just idiotic. Inner city is the shipper and they are at fault for shipping on friday. I didnt read anywhere that victoria agreed that shipping on friday was okay. Furthermore, she stated in her thread that this snake was to be a personal pet. I am under the impression that this person is not a breeder or dealer so she wouldnt know all the details to shipping reptiles. Inner City should have used a carrier that actually allows live animals. I do agree that she is lucky that her snake made it alive but it doesnt necessarily mean the little snake is going to make it. I hope for victorias sake the snake does make it becouse obviously inner city isnt going to stand behind it. Its great that fedex was so understanding considering they dont allow live animals. There are very few carriers that actually allow shipping reptiles and Im assuming its becouse they cant acomadate the needs of these animals. If you ship an animal through a carrier that doesnt permit it just to save some dollars then you have no regard for the safety of that animal.
Good luck victoria

Just FYI

Fedex will ship live animals with special permission. There are a series of hoops you have to jump through to do this. I don't know if they will make exceptions for snakes, but I know they do for fish and lizards. So we don't know for sure if Inner City broke any rules for the shipment other than common sense for shipping on a Friday which is just too risky IMHO.

I guess I would like to see some proof that fedex will allow herps. I have contacted fedex as well as ups in the past and they have made it very clear that they do not allow live animals. Airborne Express allows live reptiles but even they say very clearly that they dont recomend it. If I am wrong please correct me but I would like to know for sure. Even if you can get special consideration, I dont agree with shipping through a carrier that isnt set up for live animals. If they dont normally allow it, Im sure there is a reason. Even with special consideration I cant imagine they would insure the package. Personally I think your best bet is just to go with a carrier that allows and is set up for live animals.

My comments on this thread are solely my opinion based on my dealings with these carriers.

Corey,

I am not sure about Fed-Ex but here is the exact quote from UPS on their policy on Live Animals. I ship with UPS just about every day of the week (Mon-Thursday).

(i) UPS does not regularly provide service for packages containing live animals. (The term "animal" as used here refers to anything living, except plants.) UPS will only accept packages containing live animals for shipment within the United States on an exception basis. Transportation for packages containing live animals is limited, must be prearranged, and as with all other packages, will be provided only according to the terms and conditions contained in the UPS Tariff.

j) UPS does not provide a protective service for the transportation of perishable commodities or of commodities requiring protection from heat or cold. Such commodities will be accepted for transportation solely at the shipper's risk for damage occasioned by exposure to heat or cold. Shippers shall not file claims for, and UPS shall not be liable for, damage to perishable commodities caused by exposure to heat or cold, regardless of whether UPS fails to deliver such packages within the time published on the UPS Web site, or as provided when 1-800-PICK-UPS® is called

So another words, unless inner city reptiles, went through the lengthy process of being aproved by u.p.s or fedex, they really had no business even shipping through them. Even if a person went through all the proper channels and jumped through all necessary hoops, the carriers are still making it very clear that its not safe shipping live animals through them. I do completly understand that people ship herps through these carriers on a daily basis. many people dont even realize that they arent supposed to. I have recieved animals in the past through u.p.s and fedex and have never recieved any d.o.a's but if I did, the blame wouldnt fall on the carrier.
I personally feel that any form of shipping is pretty cruel but I understand that the reptile industry would dwindle away if shipping was unavailable. Many of the herps in my collection would be unattainable to me without shipping.with proper precautions, stress could be limited but both sender and reciever know ahead of time that they are taking a big risk in shipping a live animal through a normal carrier especially in winter conditions.
It is the sellers responsability to notify buyers of the risks.

The reptile market is growing by the day and I think that there needs to be a safe, affordable method of shipping herps. As it stands, I think that airlines are the safest method but not exactly cost affective. BUT If you want your reptile to make it guarenteed alive under the least amount of stress, I dont think $65 is that unreasonable.

Airborne Express seems to be the only other option I have found but even they can be risky. their facilities are usually big cold warehouses and your herp gets treated like any other package.
I havent had too bad of luck with these guys but proper packaging is a must. I ALWAYS mark all over the box-"live harmless reptile, keep out of extreme temps." At least your not trying to sneak something through and maybe it will get a little better care.

I have swayed from the point of this thread, regarding Inner City's incompatence so I will shut up now:)

Once again, this is only my opinion based on my own personal experiences. I apolagize for my bad grammer

hi

im actually surprised and disappointed at this thread..i was going to purchase a snake from dro over at inner city and after talking to him got the idea they knew how to take care of the animals and also do shipping. maybe it was just him??
humm..i agree that a person almost has to be a shipping reptile expert in alot of ways to buy online unless they specifically buy from someone that specializes in online sales shipping and reptiles..a big order to fill.
