LOL, the question was asked. No, it consumes fibrinogen and activates Protein C. Both of those actions have the net effect of promoting bleeding.

I would expect to see excessive bleeding from the bite site, and from any sites where blood was drawn or an IV inserted.

Hey Doc J, its been mentioned that a bite of this species causes blood to thin, if this is a an actual bite would it be normal for clotting to appear like that under the skin? I mean if it was a puncture wound wouldn't it flow and then just stop after treatment set in?

A "clot" under the skin as you're refering to, is otherwise known as a bruise or a hematoma (bear in mind that the blood is usually not actually "clotted" yet). When trauma occurs in the face of a hypocoagulative coagulopathy (i.e. the blood takes longer to clot than normal) you will see increased bruising (as compared to normal), as the person bleeds more than normal into their soft tissues. If the rate of bleeding in the tissues exceeds the rate at which the blood can escape through a puncture or laceration, then you will have pooling of that blood in the tissues, and a large bruise or hematoma will be formed. In the event of a snake bite, the puncture (i.e. the fang hole) would probably be small enough as to not afford the opportunity for much blood to escape. Additionally, the soft tissues around the puncture would act to seal off the puncture by purely mechanical pressures that are completely independent of coagulation. Consequently, you would not expect to see much bleeding from the bite puncture itself.

Something else to bear in mind is that the coagulopathy (whether hypo or hyper) that occurs as the result of envenomation is a system wide condition, and is not exclusive to, or worse in the tissues surrounding the bite.

I hope that answers your question without getting overly complicated. To be honest, coagulation disorders get really complicated really fast, and it's actually kind of hard to even discuss them without getting fairly technical pretty quickly. Of course, it's even harder to try to communicate some pretty complicated information in this venue. If you have any other questions, please feel free to ask...of course, you could always call me if you wanted. It would be WAY easier to explain a lot of this verbally than by typing.

This won't be a shock to anyone, but no refunds have been received. The USPS just isn't what it used to be, is it? I believe that I'm the last of us (the scammed) to have heard from Justyn. In an email on the 22nd he told me he could ship my snakes Friday (today) or after. The "after" part has gotten to be very familiar. Does anyone know of any way to see if he actually received the Congo or Asian shipments? I don't know if there is public domain customs records, or fish & wildlife, or anything like that. Since he's shipped caiman lizards he got at least those from South America, I just wondered if we can tell what else he has. Of course, we could just call and ask him, couldn't we? :laugh:

I talked to Justyn 3 hours ago and he's not in Bolivia....yet. He's on Mt. Everest looking for the elusive snow scorpion, but says he will be leaving soon. He has to hang glide to Bolivia to perform an emergency gizzardectomy on a newly discovered lizard he's taking deposits on. Then he has to travel to Madagascar to perform lasik surgery on a colony of Panther Chameleons that fell into one of his polluted ponds; but he said to let all of you know that as soon as that is finished he will get back on track and finish this pesky business with refunds to everyone. Unless of course there is a major outbreak of civil unrest in the Congo, then he might be delayed a bit as he will have to go to senate hearings in Austin. Also there is a slight possibility that he may walk to Somalia to breast feed the starving people there, but that's just a big if, so don't worry. He's doing the best he can with the weight of the world on his shoulders, so just be a little more patient. Also he asked, if any of you have it in your hearts, to please send him some funds as he is destitute and he needs water and food, plus fuel for his moped and a shovel to dig a pond in the Sahara desert. He said to tell everyone he'll be back by Friday; unless a black mamba tags him and he has to make a/v on the spot for himself. Then there's always the possibility of a Hippo swallowing him, but he'll just crawl out its a## and be on his way to the nearest Western Union, or just send everyone's money by carrier pidgeon. P.S.!!!!!! His pidgeon just got here and the letter written in Justyn's blood says that he's just a wee bit behind schedule as he had to fight a snow leopard on his way down Everest. So, until he can make a new leg from bamboo, he will be about a day behind schedule{he'll send pics of his injury as proof of his delay}. No worries though, after he sells the skin from the Leopard that he ripped off with his teeth , he'll send everyone their money. Unless, of course.........................

Justyn was supposed to have been working with the Senate on HB 1309 Friday night and Saturday, yet the bill was defeated on Friday afternoon.
Now, this person who testified in front of the Senate and supposedly worked with them for some reason or another, now how is it going to look when they find out he is being investigated for fraud involving the very type of animals he was testifying to protect the rights to own?
Now you're affecting the entire state, not just a few people and not just yourself.

Of course....there is the possibility that the squams he got are het for invisible.

When Justyn first posted the Asian shipment in early March, I notice he was local so I gave him a call with what I was interested in and sent him a $325 deposit. A few weeks later he posted a thread on KS about a meeting he was holding at his house in reference to HB 1309. Interested in the bill and figuring this would be a good time to meet Justyn, I decided to attend. I was the first to arrive so we had plenty of time to discuss things. I was very impressed with his overall knowledge and found it interesting conversing with him. He told me about his importings of rare animals and of his facility in Bolivia. I even had the opportunity to see a fruit bat and a two-toed sloth. It was that night he first mention the Congo shipment.

A few weeks later he posted the ad for the Congo shipment and once again I sent him a deposit, this time for $500. Over the next few weeks we conversed through both emails and on the phone. He was always prompt on returning both. Many times we made plans for me to come get my animals but our schedules never would coincide. He even asked I would come over and help him unpack one of the shipments. Then the delays started and I heard all the same excuses as everyone else but decided to give him the benefit of the doubt going off of the impression I got of him that evening at his house. He even offered to bring the animals to me but I declined this offer on the grounds that I would rather go hand pick the specimens I wanted.

Then things started getting really bad when people started wanting refunds. He told me at one point that to prevent me from thinking he was a crook that he would rather refund my money for the time being until things slowed down and he had time for me to drive back to his house and get my animals. Once again, I declined stating I felt a refund was only in order if in fact he did not have the animals promised.

I told Justyn as soon as this whole BOI ordeal started that all he had to do was give me a definite time and I would MAKE time to come get my animals so I could post pictures and give testimony to what I saw. You would think that for as simple I could have cleared this whole situation up for him he would have jumped on the opportunity. But then again why would he seek my help when he is obviously unwilling to help himself. BTW, he hasn't returned any of my calls or emails all week.
