In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Interesting and Sorta Disturbing Newspaper Article

And people wonder why I hate her so much...

She's a PETA and HSUS lovin' shill who works under a thin guise of wanting to help pet owners just so she can pervert their views and dole out incorrect "care information" so that, when their animals die, they believe the propaganda she spews about herps in captivity.

She doesn't belong on any reptile related informational site, but somehow she moderates two or three of them.

The article was a load of... Well, it was a load as I think we all reccognize, the numbers and "facts" were complete fantasy, the quotes and tone were all anti-pet trade, sad thing is, some people will take it as being credible and look to Kraplan as some kind of authority on the subject.

I'm filled with a near inchoherent rage... if anything I wrote here made no sense, please forgive me.

I thought the entire article was bias and they scewed all the numbers to support their argument. But that's media for you. At least it ended on a good note

Problems in the exotic animal industry? "The animals are never the problem," he rants, "it's the people. There's a people problem in this country."

so when you walk away from this article that's the last thing in your head. And I totaly agree with the quote.

Like so many people on this forum are adament gun owners, venemous snakes are much like guns. You can abuse your gun rights by going out and killing people or you can own it and use it in accordance with the laws. Same as snakes and all other exotics.

I know a number of people who own the animals mentioned in this article, and I see nothing wrong with how they manage and own them. I just think that the problem gets blown out of preportion and too much thinking gets involved. When it's really simple, you just need to house and care for your animals correctly and all is well.

What a shame.

"Kaplan says: 'I'd like to see a total ban, but I know that is unlikely. It isn't easy to fight a billion-dollar industry. As long as there are people to buy, exotic animal dealers will cheerfully sell, no matter what the impact is on wild populations or on the animals -- or humans.' "

Someone tell me again how Ms. Kaplan is not a threat to our industry . . . What an absolute joke!

JeffB and KS ought to be ashamed for having anything to do with her. People who are still using KS ought to have the courage to point this out to JeffB and his cohorts (minions), but be prepared to be banned once you do. Of course, if everyone were banned, there'd be no more KS to spread this garbage.

Now, wouldn't THAT be a shame?!?!?!?

First off, surprise surprise, the original thread on KS that Kelli linked to is gone.

The entire article is a pathetic attempt at sensationalism by an obviously biased and unknowledgable reporter.
The comments made by Kraplan were expected, but it's still surprising that they would be made so obviously. I suppose when the coverage of the Post is available, trying to maintain your disguise within the comunity takes a backseat.

I would however like to know the context of many quotes in the article. From the way it is written, quite a few people who have a serious stake in this did absolutely nothing to help us.
Quotes by show producer Mike Wade:
"You can get diseases from these animals," he says, "but most of them forget or don't bother."

"Most people who have these huge pythons have them to impress their friends -- come see my huge python!"

Do these people not realize that the media is not our friend. Outlandish stories focusing on every possible negative aspect of our hobby while completely ignoring anything remotely positive is what the uneducated want to read. Anything said to these people will be used to put us in a negative light or else will never make it in the article.

Bonnie Keller from Virginia Reptile Rescue did nothing to help either, but that too is expected. While there do exist a few decent rescue operations, the majority of them are Kaplanites and are not our friends either, at least not the friends of breeders.

You'll notice I'm sure that the entire article focused on imported reptiles. Using unsubstantiated and often rediculous statistics to make us look as bad as possible, while barely mentioning the fact that captive born animals are available at all, let alone the fact that nearly all the problems they point out do not apply to captive born herps.

And finally the other quote by Kraplan herself:
"unfortunately, I think the monkeypox scare is just going to be a brief blip on the screen."
What exactly is this supposed to mean? That it's too bad monkeypox wasn't worse so it could do some real damage to our ability to keep exotic animals?
This is unbelieveable, even from her. Only Peta would advocate the suffering of humanity to further their agenda. Perhaps that quote says much more after all.

It's no wonder we are getting ready to be legislated out of existance. Not only are the reptile keepers in this country either unwilling or unable to come together to fight for our hobby, but they actively take steps to ensure its demise.
I am amazed by the willingness of some of the people to so easily hand our enemies everything they need to fight us. Even dealers and others who stand to be seriously affected by the results of their comments.
If this were to happen in the real world, Bush would have sent Sadaam a few boat loads of guns and ammunition so we'd be sure to have a good fight when we got over there.
Pathetic.

Or even most imported ones according to the CITES convention this year.

"Forty seven point three percent of statistics are made up on the spot." -Steven Wright

A perfect example of todays take on "journalism". Assumptions, jumps to conclusions unsubstantiated by fact, stereotypes, insults and offensive labeling, comments taken out of context, statistics quoted with no substantiation or explanation, etc, etc. Typical pile of s**t from people who justify their cause with emotions and insist they have the right to tell you what you can and can't have and do as long as you have no authority over them. This Washington Post writer should apply for a job at the New York Times. I hear they really love when their writers lie, distort reality and create their own facts!

I had a roommate in college from Colombia. There they would collect large boas and iguanas for food and they would kill other animals for fun. I guess that is a brighter future than living in a huge cage in the suburbs of America.

Screw it, let's just keep paving and building on every square inch of land and their will be no animals left to argue over.

Numbers

Statistics can be used to support any viewpoint you wish. A long standing joke from accounting class asks, "Whats 2 + 2?" The correct answer is "Whatever you want it to be!" And sadly this is more true in the world of reporting than it is in the world of corporate accounting...three cheers for Enron, Worldcom, Xerox and a host of others.

This article is a good sampling of telling a biased story and not reporting the facts.
