• Responding to email notices you receive.
    **************************************************
In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Is Fauna loading Slow

At times it loads slow for me on this network.... and when it does... its waiting on the google ads to load... at least thats what it says at the bottom.

At home I dont normally have any problems.

**shrug**

Fauna definitely loads slow for me at certain times of the day. Early morning and later evening it loads pretty descent, but at other times it is so slow that I get frustrated and log off.

All the sites I go to seem to load normally.Fauna seems slow.Is it on my end or is anybody else having problems to.. Thanks James

Usually google ads are the sticking point... or more to the point.. google analytics are what do not want to load a lot of times.

Well, I'm using Safari for my browser, and running on a very fast computer with a SSD main drive and this site loads extremely quickly. When I refresh the screen, everything completes loading in just 5 seconds. The page itself generated by the server is done in 0.58 seconds.

You would be surprised at how much your own local computer has an effect on loading pages. Heck, I can just switch over to my OLD computer I use for emails and it's a WORLD of difference with everything else remaining the same.

As for the ads and such, sorry, but nothing in life is really for free. The Google ads are a necessity for the financial health of this site. If they weren't here helping to pay the bills and helping to put food on my table, then this site wouldn't be here neither.

I have an extremely fast server right now that this site runs on, and the ads are necessary for the financial well being of myself and this site. On my hardware at home (which admittedly is pretty robust), using Safari, the site loads extremely quickly, and I'm even using Vista.

All of this is telling me that the speed of this site loading is very directly related to the hardware that a member is using. I could remove some load related functions of this site, such as displaying the number of members and names of members within forums and reading threads to see if that will help. There are probably other things as well, but the tradeoff appears to be to make those people with robust enough systems suffer with reduced functionality to speed the site up for people who are not quite so cybernetically endowed.

I have no doubts whatsoever that I would then just be trading one complaint for another no matter what I would do. So in such a case, it only makes sense to not do anything at all, rather than putting a lot of time and effort into something that would just get me different complaints anyway.

Sorry guys, but this is a very heavily modified site that has been customized in significant ways. These all come with a cost involved that apparently some of you have to pay for with reduced throughput.

I didn't read though all that but yes it has been loading slow and I first thought it was my PC but other site load really fast as I have fast cable. BUT it is doing ok for me today! :D

Nooo don't take anything away Rich! :D

It has to do with each persons systems. I doubt that if you have 8gigs+of RAM with a dedicated T1+ line, it'll be haulin buns.

Well, you know, I'm looking at this site on my new laptop right now, even using IE and it is zipping right along. Granted this is a pretty muscular laptop, but stil, it IS a laptop..... I'm actually in the process of replacing my ailing old computer that I use for my email functions with this thing. I'm hoping to do some travelling during retirement and figured I need to be able to drag my email chores along with me. So I needed something I wouldn't be puling my hair out (what's left of it) waiting for the page to paint across the screen.

Yeah, my old computer is definitely getting ready to take the BIG flush. I can hear the main hard drive dropping off line, resetting, and then coming back again, over and over again. But not bad for a system I've had for something like 7 or 8 years (I think).

Anyway, if anyone wants to make the web a much more pleasant experience, get a PC with a SSD for the OS. Believe me, it will make a WORLD of difference.

I bet it would.... but man those things are freaking expensive. Especially for one of any size.

Ah, the trick is to get one just large enough to hold the OS (with some wiggle room) and put the apps and data on another drive.

Yeah... I just got done looking at an 80gb and they are still over $200 :(

I honestly dont know how much room Win 7 takes up.

It looks like Win 7 64 bit is taking up around 32 gb on my laptop. There are certainly some applications preloaded on there as well.

You know, when you think of it, 80gb of RAM for $200 really isn't an exorbitant price.

I'm planning on changing over my main desktop from Vista 64 to Win 7 shortly. Got the upgrade disk just a few days ago, and am hoping like hell that it really will do the upgrade without trashing my system. Not really keen on reloading all my applications again. But I had a virus checker (BitDefender) blitz my system when an update from them caused the program to identify most executables and DLLs ad being malicious code. I was able to get the system back, but man, there are some parts of it that just are not RIGHT at all now.

But I'm not sure Win 7 is going to be the "answer". Microsoft doesn't really include a decent mail program, and apparently neither Outlook nor Outlook Express works in Win 7 without registry shenanigans. Right now I'm using a program called "Mozilla Thunderbird" which seems OK, as long as you interrupt the account setup routine in time to keep it from mistaking a POP account as an IMAP account. Apparently there is NO way to change that after the account is set up, so you have to delete the account and start over, paying ATTENTION this time to interrupt the procedure in time. :bandhead0 I really do hope that the hell that these programmers go to is where they have to USE the programs they create for all eternity.....
