. . . because I always would set up the male in the breeder box first - then run the females in when they were ready.

I always thought my males did a little better when they had time to drag their junk around the cage a little and scent up their territory.

My son Peter did a Science fair project on what makes male geckos fight - and he saw a marked increase of activity and behavior with scent. They would be tasting the air and dragging their junk around when they were in the presence another male's poo. (In fact, that is a good trick to use, when you have a less than aggresive male - put the poo of another male (fresh) in a little deli and sit it in the other males cage. Works great - gets them all worked up.)

I know I'm rambling a bit - but it was interesting when my son was doing the sight experiment with the male geckos. He put a plastic window between two male geckos - so they could see each other. They didn't react - EXCEPT to run to the corners to taste the air on the other side.

Smell is a big factor - that's why I think it's good to put females with the males.

Very interesting experiment your son did. Wish I could have done science projects like that when I was in school. Well based on his info I might have to change my ways.

I’ve had some trouble with males breeding in the past. I’ve always put the male with the female but maybe that was my problem. For the males that are “wusses” I’ll have to change it up and give them a surprise.

That trick with the fresh male poo to perk up a lazy male is fascinating. Most of the time, when they get a whiff - they start dragging all over the place - and breed immediately with the first thing that presents itself.

Did I ever tell you about my attack male?

I had a male that was mean as sin since birth. He would literally go after you - with blood in his eyes.

One day, I was cleaning his cage - and he lunged at me. You know how it goes - I did that involuntary jerk - but he had attached himself onto my finger. This is a big male - and I was so startled at the speed that I flicked my hand - I thought TOWARD his cage. But He flicked off into the bottom side of my 6 foot leo rack - then JUMPED out of the rack - on to the floor of my herp room and started to run after me.

Little snot - he wanted to take me out - here he was gnawing on my shoe.

I got him back in the cage, and brought him to my friend, who needed a male. I barely got him deli'ed" - and gave him to my friend, without telling him the details.

the humor was too good!!! LOL

Monte, thats to funny, my male Bronx is like that. Tries every time to get me through the glass, and he also did the bite and fly thing......back when i thought HE was a SHE. Luckily it was only across his tank, not a far flight but enough.

I want to start breeding this coming season and i thought it would be best to put the female in with the male. In my case my five girls i plan on breeding are all in one large tank and i am going to be using three different males (blizzard pair, Boo + Zoe and Dot, and Milo with Lily and Abby). In this situation i'll be moving the girls to the boys LOL. I've thought about it and think i'll use some of my other tanks as breeder tanks.......first introducing the male and then the females. I want to have the tank with Bronx and Nala (blizzards) where i can get at it very easy. He's so aggressive i'm worried he might hurt her so i want to be able to get at them.

Since this is my first time breeding would anyone suggest the best time to start, and if i should do a cooling off period first? I've read differing opinions about that but my geckos who'll be breed are all about 2 years old now and it'll be their first time. (((weird they are only 2 and already will become parents.......i'm glad i'm not a gecko LOL))).

Ya i know, i should KNOW when to start breeding but i've also read that people breed their reptiles all throughout the year. So now i'm confused..............a normal thing for me LOL. Milo is the only gecko thats still a baby (just got him this month) so it'll be a while before i breed him but as for the others......what scedules do you guys keep and do you breed one year and skip the next?

i made the mistake of putting spot and julius near each other (outside of thier enclosured on my little work area) but i figured it would be okay because id always heard that there would be some display of warnings and tail shaking and dancing about. Wrong! spot sniffed at the air a few times, lunged at julius, got ahold of his side and did the aligator death roll about 4 times before i was able to grab them both. and what do you think julius' reaction was... of course!!! he turned around and bit the hell out of me. lock jaw on my now bleeding finger. so spots locked on julius, julius is locked on me, im bleeding and from the look of things... its gonna be a long night. literally like 5 or so minutes later of waiting and bledding i was able to carefully work my finger from julius' mouth and julius from spots mouth (not necessarily in that order). lesson learned. geckos use pheromones to determine sex and they dont always dance about doing the gecko alpha male dance before striking.

Hm, I dont really know. I put in a girl to my guys cage and he rattled his tail and she was 'fronting', but no mating occured. I put him then in her cage and nothing happened at all. Granted there were together for 5 minutes in each others cage and only a few seconds in between when I switched them.

Both have been not the greatest breeders. The male just sits around, and the girl does the same. I've started to put them into a winter (which is ironic because its like 95* outside), but once I warm them back up, I'll try the expiriment for real.

Going a bit off here, since chad mentioned the alligator death roll, one of my gravid females did that last night. I was checking her belly and she started to roll, I though nothing of it and continued my inspection, but she did it again, it was kinda cool... and weird.

Well, that got us all nowhere. Lots of blabble though.

Technically speaking, I agree with Cody, it probably dosen't really matter in most cases!....It's just what I've done with leo's and other Rep's!

And anyway It matters more which gecko has the better pad, furniture, linoleom or carpet and most importantly beer in the fridge!!!

And Lianne, I think that you might want to move that post into the personal's forum!
