In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Is JeffB trying to tell me something?

I'm going through my 2002 taxes and noticed that I paid for my storefront link on kingsnake.com back on April 4, 2002. Well darn, let me check my records. Hmm.. I got an invoice from JeffB last year back on March 5th, 2002. Well golly gee, I haven't gotten an invoice or notice this year...

You don't suppose Jeff now doesn't want my SerpenCo.com link on his site any longer, now do you? The period covered by that last year billing was from 4/15/02 thru 4/15/03.

I wonder if my link will still be there on 4/16/03?

You ought to offer to pay for a link in the name of the BOI! He won't take you offer, of course, and you don't really want him too either! Even so, it would be fun just to make him wince a little when he read your email!

I guess I will be asking for a refund on the paid support of his Corn Snakes forum as well. I guess I have to admit that I no longer support anything he is doing with the attitude he has. And I certainly am not inclined to pay for it.

I guess it's not like anyone is not going to be able to find me without those links on kingsnake.com any longer. :D

As a matter of fact, I know for a fact that some people FOUND kingsnake.com through my CornSnakes.com forums!

Hah!

Looks like my farewell message was deleted from the corn snake forum over there. I'm surprised it took so long.

Wonder what TOS I violated by posting that message?

You didn't happen to save it did you? It would be nice to have access to the exact wording, so when others over there start spreading falsehoods (and they will), one would have the ability to cut and paste from your actual message.

Heck no, I didn't save it. The only people whom would matter to me would know better if someone does start spreading falsehoods anyway.

They would probably claim that it was a reply that someone made to my original message that got it all deleted. You've heard that story before.....

Heck, once in a while I'll post a photo in that forum and get free advertising anyway. So why spend the bucks that I was over there?

I do wish I had sent a query to find out why I haven't gotten an invoice to renew my link, though. I would have been curious to hear the response, if any.

I'm sorry, but it completely boggles my mind to think that anyone would let their entire financial future in this business, or even a significant percentage, be in that man's hands.

Pretty unbelievable that this has all stemmed from his demand of me to delete Adam Block's thread on this site.

But I guess on the bright side, it was the boot in the rear needed to give me incentive to build up this site. :dgrin:

Hah!

A few other people noticed the thread had been deleted there and posted about it.

There is nothing in either their messages nor mine that violates the TOS, so let's see how long it stays there.

I guess my question would have to be: Why bother having a TOS at all if it doesn't mean anything? But then again, I guess I am asking this of people whom have a Feedback Forum that no one can leave any feedback in. ;)

You know...

> ... a Feedback Forum that no one can leave any feedback in.

That's really the funniest - and most fitting - thing about the whole situation with kingsnake.com, in my opinion.

For my part, I continue to boycott all of kingsnake.com's webpages (I don't want to support them with so much as a single hit!) and their advertisers as well, and avail myself of every opportunity to encourage others to do likewise. You don't really want to be associated with them anymore, anyway. Right?

I understand. I actually wondered if I was going to wimp out and pay for my storefront link on kingsnake.com if it was offered to me. I guess now I'll never know. I did pull my support of the corn snake forum there in protest, but in hindsight, perhaps I should have pulled my storefront link a long time ago in protest as well.

You know, this is all speculation on my part, and my opinion, but I wonder if the big push over there for the *new* forums system was because JeffB was intending to make it a paid subscription system to even access the forums? I believe the new system would be necessary for that to take place, and he sure seemed in such an allfired hurry to get it up and running. I can't see altruism as being the motivating factor in that rush.

Perhaps we put a big wrinkle into those plans and there is a bit of venom over that. I think the fieldherpers site and how quickly it sucked up disgruntled ex-kingsnake readers probably was a real shock to JeffB. Plus this site is gaining in strength and there are others out there as well that could take up a lot of slack.

Just speculation, of course.

No, not altruism! :^]

I suspect that the push for the new message board system was simply part of Jeff Barringer's plan for expansion into the other PetHobbyist areas, hastened by all those new fuzzy users' discomfort with the existing system. Certainly they complained about the old system enough during the beta test! So with his vision fully blocked by dollar signs, he abused a pretty decent core group of users in his eagerness to attract what he hopes will be a whole bunch of new users. Probably a pretty typical mistake for a business to make, actually, and in this case maybe even correctable if his ego would allow him to do what's necessary to correct it. But instead he'd rather censor and banish anyone who offers even the slightest real criticism, and as you pointed out, maintain a Feedback Forum that no one can leave any feedback in...

The aquariumhobbyist site has been switched over to a new system. For some reason, the links between it and the Kingsnake forums haven't been updated. If you notice, though, the aquatic frog forum is gone (which is sad because it was busy and helping a lot of people), and the 'ponds and aquaria' link still goes to the old forums. It looks to me like they're working out the bugs on their less busy sites and they're still going to switch the KS forums over.

What I'd really like to see is a classified site and forums site that can grow to a point to be a real challenge to KS. As much as I like this site for some reason its main attraction is still primarily the BOI. I have to admit that I don't know what it would take to get more interest in the forums and classifieds here but maybe some others do know. Rich I think your moniker of "if you can't join 'em then beat 'em" is exactly what I have in mind.

Maybe there is something about the layout of this site that doesn't give people a comfort level with doing classifieds. Maybe it's not "glitsy" enough? Like I said, I don't really know, but I'd sure like it to do well.

Could be also that some PR work needs to be done with vendors to let them know the number of hits that are occuring here so that hopefully they would see the value of advertising here? I was noticing recently the number of new user registrations and I was astounded.

On the forums side of things it would seem like between Rich and a few others around here that this should easily become the "defacto" place to be for cornsnakes.

Maybe it just needs a little more time?

John,

Part of the problem is that Rich has another very site dedicated to corns (www.cornsakes.com), and it has more of the appeal of the KS type forums, even though the setup is exactly like this site. The attitude over there is significantly different from here, and the types of people who use are different as well. There is some cross-over between the two, but not as much as you'd think.

Why is it that way? I'm not sure. However, I think Rich is trying to incorporate that same type atmosphere here on these forums as well. It may be that he needs to import cornsnakes.com into fauna, or maybe that would destroy one or both. I'm just glad that I don't have to make that decision!

;)

Actually, I wish there were a way to merge both the CornSnakes.com and the Corn Snakes forums on this site so that they would be mirror images. Two sites sharing the same database. I have talked to the vBulletin people and my programmer, and it just doesn't seem like this can be done. One problem would be registration names. There are going to be many that are used in both systems, but are different people. Perhaps if I had seen the future when I set them both up, things could have been done differently. But remember, a lot of this was done in panic mode when James Thornton pulled the plug on the server a couple of years ago, so elegance in design was NOT top on my priority list back then.

But in reality, the CornSnakes.com forums is only a small subset of all of the forums here on this site. I have to admit that I am somewhat discouraged that they are not being used more, but I did figure on it taking a while for people to frequent them. But still, it is discouraging to think maybe I wasted my time setting them up. Fortunately the design of this message board is such that the number of forums seems to have very little impact on most functionality of the site. So I could have thousands of forums here and they would just be there whenever people wanted to use them. Everyone else would not suffer because of their existence.

I specifically set up a tree layout so that someone walking in the front door would not be just overwhelmed by the number of forums facing them right off the bat. I think I was fairly logical about the layout. I do think some rearrangement is needed for the forums in the "Admin and Other Irrelevancies" section as well as the several discussion forums that have sprung up around the BOI area, but for now that is on the back burner waiting for inspiration on how best to tackle that.

The real problem is that I shouldn't have waited so long to set the discussion forums up, I guess, and should have done it from the beginning. But to be honest, until JeffB stepped on my toes, I really had no intention of doing all of the discussion forums and was perfectly happy leaving that to his site. Matter of fact, I actively pointed people to his site for such things.

When push comes to shove, I guess the real reason people don't use a forum is because no one else is. Kind of a catch-22. And I am guilty of it myself, since I certainly could be putting up caresheets in the Corn Snakes forums here and plugging in little tidbits here and there. Because that is really what is needed. Traffic follows existing traffic patterns. I guess you just can't tell people "Hey go to my forums and discuss things there!" You have to say "Hey, why don't you join me there for a discussion? There are some interesting things being talked about..."

And for the record, my intention is NOT to go head to head with kingsnake.com over anything. My intention is to give people an alternative, particularly in a business sense. It actually disturbed me greatly to see how many people have hinged their entire future in this industry on JeffB's whims. There are people afraid to speak up against him for fear of his getting pissed and cutting off their sole source of income by banning them from his site. This is foolish on the part of those people to be locked in like that. And there have been several instances related on this site alone that tend to drive home that point. JeffB's treatment of me alone in relation to his demand to delete Adam Block's thread was quite enough for me to read the writing on the wall. I believe I have made this quite clear in other writings.

I've had 10,000 flyers printed up promoting this site and have sent out bundles to several people whom are willing to distribute them for me at shows they attend and to stick in with shipments they have going out. I welcome anyone else whom is willing to give a hand at this effort as well.

Oh, and as far as my SerpenCo.com site is concerned, I actually did believe I would take a substantial hit in traffic after pulling out from having my links on kingsnake.com. But guess what? It hasn't taken a dip at all. I've been monitoring the hits on my FaunaTopSites.com site as well as the CPanel traffic stats and it hasn't changed at all.

So anyway, in a nutshell, I guess it is up to us to spend some time in the discussion forums to give people things to read there. That will encourage contributing discussions and hopefully lay out the welcome mat for new people to join on in. Waiting for the other guy to make the first step just isn't going to work, it seems.

Oh yeah, and there are a lot of new registrations coming in! I have the system send me an email each time there is a new registration, and I had to automatically dump them to their own folder to keep from getting my inbox so cluttered up.

This is a good thing.....

Well well....

I've been checking the stats for my SerpenCo.com site on FaunaTopsites.com and I'm kind of amazed that my stats haven't dropped a bit since being shown the door by JeffB. Matter of fact, my hit counter has increased noticeably.

Heck, and here I was thinking I was cutting off my nose to spite my face when I made that decision to cold turkey it on *that other site*. Didn't turn out that way at all, it seems.

Well, JeffB's plan may have backfired on him a bit.

I have gotten several phone calls and emails asking me why I am no longer advertising my SerpenCo.com site on kingsnake.com. So, of course, I have to tell them the entire story about what happened here and it's overflow effect on my SerpenCo.com site.

So, I got tired of explaining the story, and decided to just post it on the main page of my SerpenCo.com site to help forestall future questions about this issue. Hopefully this will cut down on the number of times I have to explain the situation personally to people.

This is probably old news, but

But I found it pretty annoying and offensive, so I've just gotta bitch about it now.

Yesterday I spent quite a bit of time putting together a couple posts with pics of all my snakes. (An old friend wanted to see them, so I figured I would put them all up on KS at once) So~ I give credit where it is due, and I have two snakes from Serpenco. I stated as much above each pic--Just like I stated which were from Serpents Den, and the one from Petco. Well, "Serpnts Den" and "Petco" show fine, but where I typed "Serpenco" it says "[Bleep]" Like I typed a nasty word!

Excuse me?!?

BLEEP!?!?

Another user helped out by posting SerpenCo, so people would know where I got those two pretty snakes, but it still bugs me. Delete the word if you so bloody petty that you must...........But.............

Bleep!

Well, I just tried to log into their corn snake forum myself to see if I could post a picture residing on my serpenco.com site. Wouldn't let me log in. I went through the procedure to reset my password, and even using the new password, I kept getting the message that my logon ID was not in the database.

Do ya think Jeff has now banned me completely? Even though I have not done one single solitary thing in violation of the TOS of his site? This is based SOLELY on what I have done on my OWN sites?

Or is he just miffed that I have KingSnakes.com under my belt now?

I think he is miffed

NOW the "Bleep" is case sensitive. SerpenCo turns into a "Bleep" when you post it.

I guess he just thinks your a big old "Bleep"! It's like watching Ozzy on TV, all you hear is "BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP! um, yeah BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP!"

:) ~ Sorry, couldn't help myself! Just struck me funny!
