is there a better way?

is there an easier and cheaper way to heat a rack system than heat tape? bc then u could just buy a normal cabinet a some plastic tubs and make the job alot easier. thanks

I found heat tape to be the cheapest, at less that $4 a foot and a $1.29 cord it was the least expensive. But I did use the Sterlite Drawers, and used 1' of 11" heat tape per drawer, you could probably get by with the 3" to save even more. But the drawers were $18 per set of 3 at 22X15X7 (which houses breeding groups of 1.3 to 1.5), 1 cord 15' did each cabinet (piggy back the connections) and 3' of 11" was 11.10 so I have for each cabinet $30.

I have the smaller units too that are 3 drawers but are 12x15x7 and they were $8, 1 cord per cabinet and 6" of 11" heat tape so $14.84 and house 2 easy up to juvie age.

You can use any cabinet with heat tape as long as it can withstand the heat needed for the leo, and wahtever tubs you want, you can always leave the lids on the tubs if the cabinet shwlf heights don't match up to the tub height.

you have to wire the heat tape but its really really easy, I waited for my hubby to do it for a week and gave up and tried it and wound up doing all of it myself, its real easy.

Heat cord is just like it sounds, a cord that is heated... lol...

Seriously though, it is a cord around as big as a pencil in regards to thinkness. It has a heating element encased in a rubber like material. Its pretty good stuff, is water resistant, throws off pretty good heat and has the added bonus of being already wired, just plug into a thermostat or rheostat and bam, instant heat, no muss no fuss.

As for the racks, I converted an old bookshelf into a roack system, just used aluminum tape under the heatrope and on top of it... works like a charm, no issues at all and quite cheap really....

ahh I know what rope lights are but didn't think it would be what Matthew was calling Light Rope or that it cuold be used for heat. Interesting use for rope lights though.....

i didnt think light ropes were efficient at producing heat, not to mention the light out put, not ideal in my opinion, especially for a nocturnal reptile. (i guess you could use foiltape to seal the light but heat tape or heat cable is the way to go)
