Bad Guy Is there NOBODY that Dan Scolaro won't try to scam???

Yep, even the Cobraman is not immune to the scams of Dan Scolaro. Long story short (and if you would like the long story, all the emails are pasted below) I arranged to trade Dan a rodent eating ltc Malayan Krait for the FEMALE Monocled Cobra that he had for sale on Kingsnake.com (pics attached below). He assured me it was a female (see emails below) and we arranged for my roommate to do the swap for me because I was working Earthday with our herp club. When my friend decided to probe the snake to verify it was a female, Dan objected and said that he already probed it, and not to probe it again. My friend ignored him and probed the cobra, and it turned out that it is a MALE and not a FEMALE. Dan called me and told me that it is a male and not a female, and I told him that that is ok as long as it is the one from his ad. When my friend brought me the snake, I immediately recognized that hat was NOT the snake Dan advertised on Kingsnake with pictures. This one is much lighter than the advertised one, and the monocle on the hoods are very different, and this one does not have all the white speckling that the one in the picture on his ad had. I took pictures of the cobra, then called Dan. Dan starts telling me that it IS the same cobra, because he just got it from Strictly Reptiles, and it is the ONLY monocled cobra he has had. When I told him of the differences, he started saying that he put the wrong pictures on his Kingsnake ad. How could they be the wrong pictures if he only has had one monocled cobra? And if he probed one to be a female, and I got a male from him, then he must have had more than one cobra. The bottom line is he pulled a switch on me and thought I would be too stupid to notice. If you’re going to try and fool me on a snake….don’t try it with a cobra (my specialty). If he would pull this on me, there’s no telling what he would pull on someone else. I wonder if Kingsnake.com would have any interest in how he uses their site.

Dead giveaway (besides the coloration) is that the monocle on the top one from his ad curves inward and the one on the bottom is more circular.

Right you are. A simple search of Ray's previous posts shows many unfriendly exchanges with Dan Scumlardo.

I know nothing about cobras, and anyone can see the difference with those two. They look absolutley nothing alike, except for the fact they are both cobras! Sorry you got scammed, but I myself would never complete a trade without seeing the animal in person first, especially if it is a trade with someone that you knew was a crook. Especially after the fact that he lied about the sex of the animal and it became suspicious when he contradicted himself about the pictures.

I agree also. With all the threads about Dan, and with the atrocious way he treated many here on the posted BOI threads who had any sort of customer service complaint, it would not matter how much I wanted an animal he had for sale/trade, I just would not put myself in the situation of having to deal with him if anything went wrong.

Actually I agree with you. It was a calculated risk. I have sold animals to Dan in the past, but this was the first time I was on the receiving end. I have known Dan for about 7 years and did not think he would pull something like this on me (but then, why would I be any different than the others?).

Anyway, no big deal. I just thought I would post my experience on the BOI so that it may help some other trusting person not to become another victim of DTS HERPS Inc.

He would then rant and rave for a while about tying people up in a red dress, and finally tell us that his hobby or business (depending on which day it is) is better than ever. Also, he NEVER sells local wildcaught stuff!

Lucille, I agree with you 100%. Dan HAS brought a lot of this on himself, (by the way he has responded to other folks).

I didn't mean to come off responding for him, I simply emailed him this a.m. and asked his side, I reported it on the BOI likewise.
I ask for people to look at BOTH sides of this. Sure, I think it's unfair for Dan to not be able to respond here. I agree, Dan does not have a good rep. here, but Ray Hunter and ERJ have dubious threads here also, thus my calling the kettle black in my first post on this thread.

Randal, I am sorry to have to accuse Dan of lying (again), but what he told you is not true. When I called him he continued telling me that it is the same snake, and that he probed it. Then when I pointed out the differences, he started screaming and yelling and hung up. I know he is your buddy, and you want to be able to believe him, but he has proven time after time that he is not able to be truthfull. He WAS an aquaintance of mine (and a customer) but he has always lied to me. I just would never have thought he would deliver the wrong snake (knowing I was specific about wanting the exact on pictured) and then attempt to lie about it numerous times.

If I considered that Dan could not come defend himself, I would have thought twice about starting the thread. I am handling the matter between Dan and I through other means now, and am not trying to get anyone to pick sides or bash Dan. I just wanted to share my first experience to warn others that think he would not do the same to them because they know him on a more personal level. Dan assured me that the snake he would bring to my room mate was a female and the exact one pictured in his ad. He lied about both issues, and did not even want my friend to take it out of the bag, much less probe it. I told him (when he and my friend called me after probing it) that I can live with it being a male, as long as it was the exact snake in the pictures on his ad. Dan assured me that it was, yet told my room mate (who does not have as much experience with cobras) that the lack of white speckling and the white bands are because "the one in his ad pictures was flattened out".

Anyway, since he can't come on and defend himself, we are kicking a dead horse. I will handle the matter through other means.
