In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

is this bad?

I have an African fat tailed gecko and I noticed for awhile now this part of my gecko. I read a little bit about prolapse but I don't know if that is what this is because a) he's had it for quite a while and I would think he'd be dead and b) it's not bloody looking. I've looked at other pictures of male geckos and this part doesn't have the extra skin and slashy things there so I'm wondering if this is normal or if there could be a possible problem? I'm not sure if it even might be extra dead skin since he has some problems getting the last little bits off of certain places like his nose and feet. If it is skin, how would I get it off? Any idea what it is?

That's not a Prolapse. There is alot of stuck shed there, and it looks like it has caused some sorta of problm with his pores. Is that a hole? Can you get a clear picture?

Do you keep his humid hide moist so he can shed easily?
You can soak him and gently remove the shed but something doesn't look right there, see if you can take a pic without the plastic.

other pics

Pores, what that? Hole, isn't there supposed to be a hole there I thought that is where they poop. He poops fine too. I tried to take a better picture but he wouldn't have it and kept squirming around a lot. I don't know what this is, but I know he's had it for quite awhile I've just been lately curious what it is. I would think if it was something serious he would have gotten sick or be dead by now? I know that one part is skin cause it looks like it but I don't know what the other things are unless it is just skin attached. What should i do? These are the best I could get.

And no usually I do not mist the cage. he does have some problems shedding especially on his face and toes but nowhere else usually.

No the hole isn't supposed to be there. They poop from the vent , it is a little bit lower were the tail conects. It looks like the shed has cloged up the pores, and started started working its way inward. I am not sure what this will cause but it can't be good long run. I haven't had this happen to my afts or leos but I think you may need an experianced reptile vet. Maybe someone else has seen this before and will post. I would think it may cause an infection, and it can't be good the pore are cloged and inverting by the looks of it.
Fat tail require humidity in thier cages. He should have a humid hide that is kept miost at all times. There wouldn be sheding problems with it.

Should I try letting him soak in water to see if it will come off and then see what it looks like underneath?

You could soak him in warm water and pull of the shed that is hanging, but the problem looks deeper now.

I posted at the same time, try that then maybe we could see how bad it looks underneath.

This is what it should look like, one of my aft males.

Okay I have taken off the huge shed thing and you are right! there are like dart pieces of shed sticking into him. they have kind of hardened probably cause they've been there so long. it looks a lot better now but the dart things are still sticking in there. should i let him soak for awhile and then gently brush down toward the tail to see if they come out? i already got one of them out, doesn't appear to bleed or anything

I am not reallt sure but I think cleaning it out won't hurt. I would soak him for awile before then work on it. Maybe give him a break and work on it tomorrow too. The pores also release a waxy substace that may be clogged as well. You still may need a vet even if yo get it cleaned out, he may need antibiotics.

It also sorta looks like a wound now, be sure to keep his cage very clean. I would use paper towels as substate for now if you don't already. Do you have a reptile vet in your area?

I don't know, I'm gonna leave it alone because I don't want to hurt him (though he doesn't squinch at all when I poke at the things with the q-tip) There one animal hospital thats open tomorrow 8-12 so I'm going to try that and hopefully they practice on reptiles. It kind of does look like a wound. I'm going to change his carpet tonight and take a lot of the crickets out of there to be safe and take him in tomorrow morning first thing. I really hope they do practice on reptiles. I live in a small town and there isn't much here.

Good luck tomorrow, hopefully someone will have experiance with reptiles, if not maybe they can find someone who does.
check back in tomorrow maybe someone who has seen this before can help.
