When your home is situated in such a way that when one enters the front door, the first thing you see is a huge display tank with an 8 ft. female labyrinth burmese in it....well, you notice when she's not there.

After a long evening, Steve and I came in last night to see....an empty tank.

With 3 sides and the top being glass, the options for escape were very limited. Since the bottom was intact, I went immediately to the back panel (Sherlock Holmes that I am) and starting unlocking the eight separate latches that secure this one-inch thick piece of plywood. *click, click, click, click, click, click, click....* Uh oh. I only had to unlock 7 of the latches.

One lousy latch, and my little Houdini found it and pushed her way out.

The good news about losing an 8 ft. burm is that they're typically easy to find. The bad news is that my hamsters were very, very agitated.

The first place we looked turned out to be the right one: she had gone through the living room, dining room, kitchen, down the hall and into the main snake room, where she was curled up on top of the tank of her future breeding partner, the 15 ft. lab male.

WHEW!!!

I'm a responsible herp keeper. I swear I am!!! This kind of thing happens to you guys too, right? :bolt01:

Never...

Watch out for the lightening bolt about to strike.

Seriously, I think it's like a speeding ticket and driving. Do it long enough and it will happen.

Absolutely, Terese.....I just wish it was as easy to find a yearling BP as it was for you to find an 8 foot Burm, lol.

I STILL have no idea how the bugger got out, either.

thats pretty weird how it went to the male. Was there alot of other warm hidding spots on the way? or was it just a coincidence that she found her way to the male?

If you had a poddle you wouldn't anymore!!!!!lol :hehe:

Along time ago Peter Kahl sent me 50 boas on consignment and 5 got out. I thought I was a dead man. I was 16 years old and could'nt replace $35 each!! Luckily my Mom & I found them.

great story ms terese.

It happens! Like the man said, do it long enough and it will happen.

have you installed latch 9 yet? lol

oh yeah...
something liked this JUST happend to me as well, but it was a leo and not a big snake! lol!

I had no idea he had even escaped. I was sitting on my computer banging away, when all of a sudden, I hear my Basset Hound let out a blood curdling scream, I turn around to see what the hell was going on, I catch this flash of yellow flying through the air and my poor dog yelling and pawing at his nose...well needless to say, the yellow flash I saw soaring across the room was my leo, he had bit down on my Bassets's nose and in an attempt to get the leo off, the dog flung his head and the gecko went airborne. The gecko was fine, in fact he was totally un-phased..the dog was another story. The gecko had managed to bite the poor dog dead center in the middle of his nose between the nostrils and draw an unbelievable amount of blood! This poor dog bleed for a good 30 minutes, all over my freshly mopped floor. I was amazed at the damage a little leo could do!
It was my fault , I had not pushed the tub all the way back into the rack and the leo climbed out the back..
Talk about feeling like a bad mommy!
I am glad to say that both leo and Basset are doing well...
so yes, Mr Terese, shat happens!!

My corn snakes are the best at disappearing. They always show up within a week though somehow. I did have a ruthveni kingsnake get out and when I was feeding my ballpythons in their racks who's head should poke out of the side of the rack? The kingsnake he had gone across the room and was along the side of a tub in the rack. He must have smelled the mouse I was tease feeding one of my ball pythons and decided to come and get some dinner :eatsmiley .

I currently have a Suriname Boa slithering/coiled around somewhere. I have an odd feeling the cats let her out. New latches being installed tomorrow.

Great story, Terese. You're lucky she didn't go through cleaning off shelves for you. That's what happened to a friend of mine when his huge retic got out. It looked like someone ransacked that room.

I'm guilty of having escapees myself. Last year I had a 2.5' KSB male get out (my only adult male, of course) and my cat ate most of him. :( Then this year I was drilling some tiny holes in a container for one of my newly hatched greybands. I had only drilled a couple in one container and I had this weird feeling like the drill bit was too big. I switched to a smaller bit and had every intention to go back and put tape over the 2 (yes only 2) holes that I thought were too big. Guess what? I went to feed the bb greyband and it was gone, gone, gone, I guess more cat food. I never found that one.

I think the BEST escapee story I know is when a customer of mine called, hysterical that her leo had escaped. The lid was still on the tank, and there was no apparent way for it to have gotten out. I did my best to console her, give her ideas where to look, and assure her she would eventually find the gecko.

Months passed, and I received an email from her that she had never found the gecko, so she had unplugged the UTH and began thinking about getting another one. She wanted to wait to get one from me that "looked exactly like her lost gecko, so I did my best to find one that resembled it to no avail.

A week or so passed, and I got a call from her... she was freaked. She had found her gecko! "Where was she?", I asked. She told me it was back in it's tank!!! She said it was skinny, but otherwise seemed fine! (This is where the theme song from the "Twilight Zone" started playing in my head).

A few days later, I received an email from the customer. Apparently, the cleaning maid found the gecko behind the refridgerator and put it back in it's tank! LOL!!!
