In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Josh@Outbackreps has had an add in the Amphibian classifieds here for a while for a sub-adult pyxie frog. Originally it was for a Sub-adult male pyxie. I emailed him and let him know that he had a female.

He changed his FC add, but has kept his KS add the same.

His new add is as follows:
-----------------------------------------------------
Sub-adult pixi frog.
It is about 4" and looks to be a male as it is getting some red under his arms, but we have been told by different frog people that it could be a male or female, so is sold unsexed.

A very cool frog that will get huge, and make a amazing display animal as well.

It is feeding on mice, rat pups, roaches, super worms, and anything else it can fit into his mouth.

Take it home for $150 plus shipping
(Sex is not guaranteed)
------------------------------------------------------
My question is why hasn't he adjusted the price, and why does he insist that this "looks to be a male". I can understand a mistake by not knowing how to sex pyxies, but this is obviously not a male frog, and the price is wrong for a female. He can ask whatever he wants, but I feel that he is trying to get one over on the unsuspecting customer that has heard about the Pyxies and wants a male. This is not a male and Josh's continuation of the add after me and others have offered help in sexing the frog shows a willingness and maybe even intent to rip somone off.

This complaint is stupid. Sounds like he's being honest in the ad

"we have been told by different frog people that it could be a male or female, so is sold unsexed."

If you dont like it then don't buy the frog...

The add was changed on fauna to reflect conflicting information on the sex as we have been told by different people that it was either sex.
The animal was sold unsexed shortly after the fauna add was updated to a wholesale client and I must have missed the add on kingsnake when taking down old adds.

Being that we never guaranteed the sex on the animal either way, and you did not have any transaction with us this thread does not really have a purpose. The original add stated that we were told it was a male not that we guaranteed it. The price really does not matter if someone is buying the animal they are either fine with the price or not, we do not believe in price fixing but rather what we feel the animal is worth/what we have into it.

As for intent to rip anyone off that ridiculous, as the Internet if full of "experts" so anyone can say anything in regards to the sex of the animal.. After being told that someone thought it was a female I asked different breeder what they thought and they said it could be a younger male or a female but would not guarantee it, which we did not.

There is no pulling one over on anyone, as the add clearly stated the above info that we were told with no guarantee offered.

Never buy from outback they will rip you off every time they have done it to me twice .

I bought 400 dollars worth of savanahs and niles all were dead in 3 days I called and called and left messages but no one ever tried to make it right with me I was very disappointed, they lost a great deal of business with me.

Hi Josh, thanks for replying. The add does have purpose. You'll notice I didn't put the 'bad guy' tag or whatever it is. The purpose is to have you clarify your intent and to see if anyone has something to say about your reputation as a Herp dealer....Hence this forum "Board of Inquiry". Read the add and you will see that the purpose of the add is to hear what you have to say. Is that not the purpose of the BOI?

What breeder told you it could be a male? Did 'the unspecified third party' see the animal? You had a text-book female animal (African Bullfrog-Life history and captive husbandry 2012)

As for "internet experts", I agree wholeheartedly. You'd think if you were going to sell the animal, you might have some type of expertise. This is why this add caught my attention. These frogs get sold to people by dealers claiming that they are males when they know better. On the same token, some of you sell them as Adspersus when you know they are Edulis with the intent to make more money.

I don't claim to be an expert on the Pyxies, but anyone with a rudimentary knowledge of these frogs, especially someone selling them and posing the opinion that "it looks to be male" should know something about sexing the frog. When I contacted you to let you know, it was without malice or intent to harm your business. That's why I contacted you privately.

I've never dealt with Josh directly, but I purchased a snake from Cooper's Constrictors that came from Josh at Outback as an import. Because she's an import and changed hands a few times this year, I wasn't expecting nearly the quality animal I am holding in my lap as I write this. Because of the quality of this particular snake, I'm interested in doing business with Josh directly on future purchases.

If you have something other than opinion to offer please post it. Otherwise, leave the conversation to people that have dealt with Josh.

I dealt with Josh and Outback only once but is was an outstanding experience. They allowed me to make payments over time and the pair of snakes they sent me were spectacular. They honestly represented their animals and they stuck to the deal. From my one experience, I would recommend them to others.

I am not going to drag any names into this as when we were told it looked to be a male it was casual conversation asking a fellow breeder/friend their opinion and based on the size of the animal and color we were both leaning toward the fact that it could be a male, but being that we do not specialize in frogs stated clearly that we did not guarantee the sex.
That said if the animal was a definite female I would have bought her myself as we have a 7 year old pixi that we are fairly sure is a male, based on his size. On the matter of the dwarf pixi frogs we do not really even bother with them as all they do is create a potential issue for buyers wanting a giant and seeing a dwarf price tag.

I hope this clears the air for you, and feel free to give me a call to talk if you have any other questions or concerns on this issue.

I have seen the ad and can say with 100% certainty THERE IS NO WAY IN HELL that is a male. Any attempt to sell it as otherwise, or even as unsexed, is being completely ignorant and trying to rip somebody off. Anyway with the ability to use this new invention called google images could figure this out in 20 seconds.

Thanks Josh I'll do that. Sounds like you are a stand up guy.
I'm satisfied with that. FYI, size and color alone are not good indicators for future reference. Females get the red/orange under the arms. When color is a consideration, it is in regard to yellow on the underside of the belly and jaw.

These animals are difficult to sex when very young, but by a few months (and if they are well cared for) and or 4-5 inches it should be clear.

I appreciate the info, and will keep that in mind for the future as well.

Please shoot me an email if you do not mind as now I an interested in double checking the pixi I have, and would like you opinion on it as we have always thought male based on size, but never looked into as its just a pet.

On a side note, Thank you all for your feedback, and C.Raye please check your private messages as I had a few questions for you in regards to your post.

I have had multiple transactions with Josh in 2011 and 2012, all dealings have been smooth, with no problems. Josh answered all of my questions, and returned all phone calls. I have no reservations in recommending him. I am looking forward to purchasing again from him in the near future.

Having read a few of these BOI threads, I'm glad we got it resolved before it got side tracked by people's egos. Mistakes happen. I am just sick of others truly deceiving people not only in regard to selling these frogs, but the overall lack of knowledge, and misinformation in regard to the Giant African Bullfrog (Pyxicephalus Adspersus aka pyxie frog) in general. The commonly propagated husbandry for them is wrong on almost every level.
