Some like 'em hot!
A teacher at my son's school got this pet shop iguana as a classroom pet last year. Yeah, I know; DUMB. Long story short, the teacher is no longer with the school and the school doesn't want the lizard, so they dumped it on That Mom Who Has All The Snakes (yours truly).
As far as I am aware, while this guy was kept under appropriate heating and lighting sources, his diet consisted almost exclusively of greens. I've had him for a couple weeks now and have broadened his diet considerably. Besides being a bit thin, he looks pretty healthy. I've been working with him on handling and he has gone from tail-whipping and open-mouth displays to allowing me to hold and carry him. (I say "him" but I really don't know.) He is about 18-20" long including his tail. His nails need trimming and a couple of his toes are overlapping one another. I think it's because his nails are too long, though theoretically I guess it could be mild MBD? He does allow me to "unlayer" his toes and they look fine when I do that. I really don't know since I'm not a lizard person, but I thought it was safest to load him up on natural sunlight and a healthy diet, which I've been doing.
I've spent some time researching iggy care and have reached the conclusion that I am not at all a good long-term home for him. I will continue to care for him until I can find a good home, but sooner is far preferable to later. I will ship, but it will have to be at the expense of the adopter. This guy needs to go to someone who is well-versed in all aspects of iguana keeping, plans to provide a permanent home, will NOT BREED him if he has any health issues, and can care for him properly. If this is you, please contact me ASAP! Thanks! I will post pics of the little guy tomorrow.
