In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Karma Abuse.

Why get karma for anything, then?
Are we making posts to feel good about ourselves? Or to share our knowledge and experience...to help other enthusiasts, regardless of the type of forum?
If the former, then it would seem that receiving karma would be desirable - what better way to stroke the ego than have people say you done good?
If the latter, though, it would seem that the karma would fall in importance...and end up serving its intended goal.

I agree that the Karma button is good when used for patting someone on the back, thanking them for a useful bit of info or insight. To limit it to just BOI would not be a good thing as a lot of people here don't/won't post in that section. just my thoughts....

I think you misunderstood my intent or maybe I didn't word it properly.

Being helpful should be a reward in and of itself at least that is what I have been taught.

I give out advice when I can, just to give it out. Actually, I rarely receive any karma at all for it. Doesn't stop me though, since that ain't why I do it.

Well...

It doesn't bother me, people have the right to express their opinions, what actually bothers me is the WHINING and the misunderstanding of what it is for is chiefly why people whine.

Right, but that's kinda what this thread is. People whining about the karma system. Personally, I have never liked it. It was better when all members only had the ability to give positive karma. I realize it's hypocritical of me to say this when I find myself using the system too, but I do believe as a whole the karma system does absolutely no good. Just my opinion.

Yeah, you are right. I didn't see it like that, but I AM whining. Let me shut up!

When to know a poster is karma driven

It's easy to determine when karma is used by a person as booster for power, ego, etc. Just check how much time elapsed since the person received negative karma and when he/she makes a comment about it in a particular thread. Was it weeks, days, hours, minutes? The shorter the time span, the more frequent this individual is monitoring it's karma.

And a lot times that's just minutes apart.

I think I got negged once before we got zeroed out. It was retaliatory too by self admittance. Maybe I should have created a big thread about it, so I could get some cheese to go with all the whine.

What if?

The problem is when karma is given frequently posters whose main objective is degrade others, because they have found that this approach results in people giving them positive karma. What if karma could be viewed by everyone instead of being private? Good posts would still be rewarded, and fewer people might disagree with the karma giver. On the other hand bad/outrageous posts might not be rewarded with positive karma.

Now that's an interesting idea. I dig it.

can you say custom coding. I dont think there is an option to make your karama public. I haven't seen it on our site.

How do you know that it results in good karma for them? :shrug01:

Most of my GK has come from random stuff, usually agreeing with points made, while the posts where I was really on someone's case didn't net any. I don't post the things I post in hopes of getting karma from it.

Why are some people seemingly so obsessed with why others have more good karma than they do?

Beats me... figure if I get some karma... I get some. If I dont.. .that's ok too. Funny thing is... my last two boosts came from some silly stuff I posted... just kidding around and having fun.

I am who I am, and thats all I can be.

Shadera,

You are new here. It's just the way it has been in the past, and in the words of Saramago "if you forget the past your are doomed to repeat it'. People have been abusing the system and they were banned for this very same reason. There was additional point. What karma does is to rank individuals by their approval rating. If you agree with this, fine. The problem is that oftentimes this have meant that this approval was earned by demeaning others. Why? Because of human nature. There's always people who like to see other call people names: you are a liar, thief, etc. etc. There's when increased liability to the site comes from. They are not civil not because they are like this in their everyday life, they are because they get rewarded for doing it. As stated before, check who has complained about receiving bad karma and you will find the approval seekers. :yesnod:

In addition, we usually state that those that are at fault are the ones that send their money to questionable breeders, dealers, flippers, as they are the ones that perpetuate the problem. Well, it's the same here, karma seekers would not be a problem for the site it if was not for the people that give them good karma for their posts in poor taste...
