In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

So a couple days ago I was asked if I could lend someone a male breeder to them for breeding with their female. Nothing big, they were just hoping for a Pastel as a one time deal since they only have a normal female. Of course they offered me a percentage of the money made on the hatchlings. Has anyone ever done this or would you? If you would or would not could you give any reasons or examples please.

Many people do breeding loans but its not all fun, games, and money. For lower end clutches I would not do it. For a breeder loan you better know where your snake is going or the loaner snake is coming from. How big is the collection and how new of additions do they have? You have to quarantine the snake so you better get it way before breeding season. I have seen people get snakes in with mites and worse. I have lost a snake in a breeding loan and heard of people losing a lot more. I have done loans where the female did not take or one I fed for almost 9 months before she was Gravid. Then you still have to hope the clutch is worth it. After all that, what if the other guy wants more or feels the deal should go a different way? There are a lot of questions you need to answer first.

From what I've read around here you'd better get a loan contract set up. I'm sure you can search "Breeder loans" and get a LOT of threads pop up with suggestions and experiences.

For examp0le here is a very basic agreement from a thread where something DID go wrong....

Boa Breeding Contract

I Brian Rogers hereby agree to split the profits of breedings by Jessica Miller’s albino male boa and three 100% hetero albino females that I (Brian Rogers) currently own. I shall be housing and selling the baby boas and will send the profits for 25% of the albino offspring and 50% of the hetero albino offspring to Jessica Miller. If, for some reason, the breeding does not go as planned, we will discuss possible other options which may result in a cancellation of breeding plans and each paying for the shipping of the albino male boa to Brian Rogers’ place of business at 3887 state road 43 Richmond oh 43944. and back to the home of Jessica Miller.

They only have a single female and they want to give it to me to breed. None of my BP's would be leaving the house. I just have never done this or really even heard of anyone else doing it so I wanted some thoughts on what everyone thinks

They seem to go sour fairly regularly, I'd get something in writing even for such a small loan. I only did this once and got stuck looking after (and feeding) my friend's female for over a year.....

I don't see why not if you know the person..check out their setup ahead of time. If you have the extra room. They pay a certain price per week you have the snake for feeding and housing..you can make terms such as you get first pick of the clutch etc..write up something voiding you from liability in the event the snake were to die etc etc

I wouldn't do it unless they are a good friend and I'm completely comfortable with the husbandry of any animals they keep. This said, I have done it a time or 2 and it usually isn't worth the time, effort and money it costs to do so.

I have done this also, an agreement was set out ahead of time and we have stuck to it since. Any clutches are split 50/50 with the owner of the female taking the first pick. This can change if it is a 2-3 morph male to a normal female, then the owner of the male takes the first pick. So far it has worked out really well for me. Always check out the other persons setup first, make sure you are comfortable with what they are doing.

General rule of thumb is whoever has the higher dollar snake get first pick. Problem with that is what if I produce a $10,000 snake and four $1000 snakes......I get $12,000 of snakes and you get $2,000. Sounds fair to me:D it's not. Split the value of the clutch with odd amount going to higher value snake or who does all the work. But someone please tell me (anyone) what's fair when your "buddy" gives you a snake that has a disease that he doesn't know about and it dies along with 7 or 8 of yours and it costs you about $5000 to save the rest of your collection? I know of someone this happened to. Is your buddy going to give you a pastel to make up for it? If you can't follow proper quarantine you are risking your snakes lives to try and make an extra buck. You really need to know what your getting in to before just doing. No offense to the op (who will probably think I am a a-hole) but if your going to call yourself (business) a pro, please try and understand the basics first. It's just kinda disrespectful to the people that have done it for a long time and care for hundreds of animals properly. I will answer any question you have and be man enough to tell you if I don't know, but won't call myself a pro until I am paid as one.

Have them supply you with feeding and housing costs, quarantine the female and have a written agreement. For me, it sounds like a lot of work and you're doing them a big favor.
