    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Leopard Gecko eye problem

Hello, I have a leopard Gecko. His name's Dave, he's always been pretty healthy. He's ten years old, rarely has any problems shedding and eats crickets.
Just recently, I've noticed a slightly cloudy eye - as time has passed, the eye has now swollen slightly and Dave often keeps it closed. There is no additional fluid or gunk or anything like that, but it doesn't seem to be getting any better.
I wondered if anyone here has had any similar problems, or experience in this matter. Apart from his eye, he seems fine and continues to eat and shed, but it is causing concern.

Any help or advice would be very welcome. Thanks!

Your gecko might have a vitamin A deficiency. I know that Zoomed makes a turtle eye drop that helps with this issue (don't worry, it's safe to use on lizards too). I've used it in the past and it does work. But I agree with seeing a vet first if you can.
 
I was wondering about a vitamin deficiency too. The first thing I did was get Dave some new Nutrabal calcium balancer in case his old supply had become inefficient, and I'm sure the eye cleared up for a while, before returning to the state you see above.
The eye doesn't seem to bother him, but it can't be comfortable - so I will definitely seek veterinary advice for the condition.
I'll post back any results :)
 
His humidity is 80 - 82, and his substrate is 'Zoo Med Cage Carpet', a soft, non-abrasive substrate. Dave prefers this as he used to be in danger of swallowing the looser stuff when feeding.

I got in touch with a vet today, and they have replied that although they don't have a recognised lizard specialist, they are happy to see Dave. If they can't help, they'll know someone who can, I hope!
 
there's an annual Reptiles USA magazine (from the editors of RETILES), and in every annual issue they've got a herp-certified vet listing. Try this and go to arav.org for vet listings.
BTW, the humidity is probably a tad too high. How often do you mist the enclosure? 50-60% would be more ordeal.
 
Just to let you know Dave was referred to an 'exotic animals' specialist today, and was diagnosed with swelling, due to a scratch on the eye (probably from a criocket). He's been given some Exocin (ofloxican) eye drops twice a day for up to 10 days.
