In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Sorry, when I first signed up I had stumbled upon a specific "Leopard Gecko" section from google... I only have a simple question.

- I was told that mealworms are a good alternative to crickets sometimes, so I bought a few and dropped em' into my tank. Ignorantly lol, I didn't put the mealworms into a small dish and they instantly just burrowed. (I don't think any of my 4 leopards got one of them...) - This was a few months ago. NOW, I have a whole civilization of mealworms/beatles under my bark, (I use the forest bark,) - and I'm not sure if this is safe? I mean, if mealworms are a good food source FOR my geckos, than I don't see the problem. However, I could be wrong - seeing as to how the mealworms morph into the beatles after time, and I don't think my geckos eat these at all. On top of the beatles possibly being a problem, what good are the mealworms if they're still living under the bark and my geckos can never really get to em'?? Write back, and I appreciate your interest in reading this.

I would do a full tank cleaning and get rid of the bark all together. They can get impacted from it if they accidentely eat it. There are many other suitable forms of substate to use depending on the age and size of your leos. If you "search" this forum for the word "substrate" you will find many threads about it with a lot of good information.
if you have trouble with the search fature just give me a shut and i will post a few links for you.

As far as malies go , i belive there are a few big breeders that feed oonly mealies to their leos. So they must be good.

Mealies are a fine food source and as nicolai said, you should clean the tank out and change the substrate. Just as a suggestion, when you clean it, try and pick through the chips and recover some of those mealies so you don't have to go out and buy any; by the sound of your post, you have quite a few in there!

I wanted to add...If you have the time and patience, go ahead and pick as many of the Mealies out as you can while cleaning out your viv. Free feeders! :)

You can use the beetles to breed and make mealworms. Thats what I do with the ones that turn into beetles. None of my Leos will eat them ad beetles. Also don't keep beetles in with the Leos and make sure you are gutloading all of your feeders.

yep please do try to get them all out of there, as they can really cause your leos stress...

if you do have quite a few, you can take all of them out and put them in some oatmeal or rolled oats, or a commercial gutload you can buy at any petshop. Then you can give them a carrot slice or apple slice or any fresh fruit or veggie (make sure this is taken out before it molds though) and voila, you have gutloaded mealies that you can use to feed your leos with.

just make sure next time you put them in a mealie proof dish ;)

The leos will not eat the beetles, as I have heard that they produce an unappetizing odor...but the beetles will breed and get you more mealies :) then you don't need to buy more :D
