Wasn't sure where to post this...

but check out the homepage...The center product...

http://naturezonepet.com/main2.php

I was going through the October issue of REPTILES and saw a full page advertising this "Liquid Color."

It's available in "3 exciting colors" yellow, orange/red and blue/green...New way for scammers to do what they do best?

Their isn't much information available on their website either...The link is a dead end...

"This is not a gimmick, the Liquid Color product really works by intensifying and maximizing the colors already present in your reptile. In fact, it is the first product specifically designed solely to develop maximum color display in your herp. Liquid Color is a premium blended mixture of complex carotenoids and anti-oxidants which assure stability, maximum absorbency and pigmentation enhancement. It will develop deep saturated colors and revive faded colors in ALL herps. Available in three color mixtures to guarantee maximum effect on each variety of herp. Simply match the color of the product with the dominant color of your herp. It's 100% safe, effective, easy to use and in just a few weeks you will be astonished by the increase in colors on your reptile."

mixture of complex carotenoids and anti-oxidants
Sounds like just a vitamin supplement with a catchy name and some hyped info. Doesn't seem like it's a product for scammers to fake colors like some sort of hormone. Many people that have animals with red in the look for a high level of vitamin A (aka carotenoids) to help their red animals be the reddest they can. Without more info I'd have to say it's just a vitamin supplement and more than likely will not exactly work as well as promised and make brown animals red overnight. Most likely the blue/green is just fortified with spirulina algae. Seems the only one that will get scammed is the person buying this product expecting dramatic results. :)

Stephanie, there was some talk about this type of color enhancing in the leo forum and I feel that if you alter the color in any way, even if it is a ** premium blended mixture of complex carotenoids**, its just plain wrong.

Just like if you were to feed all of of the feeder insects carrots only to up the beta carotene to enhance the orange coloring.

Givign adequate vitamins and minerals in supplement form is different than knowingly giving something that has enough of a substance to improve color.

here is the discussion in the leo forum:

Herptivite supposedly has enough Vitamin A to improve color.....

Sorry about the double post!

Herptivite contains vitamin A in the form of Beta Carotene and if you used a ton of it every day it could enhance color Im sure.

Thats why there is a fine line between proper supplementation and supplementing in a way that enhances color like the Nature Zone products advertisie to do.

For my leos I currently use on all feeders: Mineral O & pure calcium (no D3 or phosphorous) daily, then Herptivite once a week and Reptivite (contains D3) 2 times a month. I also leave a dish of calcium out at all times.

I gutload with Progeckos gutload now and use oranges for moisture in the bins and thin carrot slices in the mealie dish in the cages.

At $6 its probably not much better than regular vitamins anyway, I wouldn't imagine it has higher than average levels of anything.

One thing I notice now is that its a spray bottle. Is it to be sprayed on food or directly applied to the animal? If you spray it directly on an animal I can certainly see this used for scamming people and it not working to legitimately add color. Quick spray and snap a pic of an animal that is 200% more colorful than it should....that would be deceptive as hell.

I called reptiledirect.com about it a while back when it was first discussed and they said it was to be sprayed on the food items as a supplement.

It is $5 there and I almost bought some with my other supplies just to see the ingredients since its not listed on Nature Zone's site and the link on the description on their site to the info never works, its not on the package either, (according to the owner at reptiledirect) but I thought it may have the info on the bottle or on a package insert, but I decided not to waste my money.

Yeah, thats what got me is the no list on the package, I asked reptiledirect to open it and he didn't want to open it then not be able to sell it.

Im curious to see what the ingredients are to see if its all color enhancing stuff or loads of vitamins with just some hype of color enhancement.

This is not the first color enhancing additive to be used. Nekton makes a vitamin suppliment caleed Nekton Rep Color. It has been around for at least 15 years.

Steve, I don't think anyone said it was the first one out there, Stephanie just asked about this NEW one and others thoughts on it.

Question is do they work? If they do - Does this open a new door to scammers to misrepresent the color of their animals? It is truly safe to use?

High concentrations of any supplement that would be enough to enhance color could and probably would be harmful to the reptile itself.

The Nekton Rep Color you reference mentions of Vit A and D3 which are known to be harmful in excess amounts.

Dragonfly, I forgot to thank you for the link...THANKS! :)

I also think that it is shady for a breeder (or anyone for that matter) to do something to a reptile to alter the colors; whether they're dyeing them with Gatorade or using "color-enhancing" supplements. It is still an inaccurate portrayal of the animal. If someone purchases the animal, do you really think a seller would admit to using a color enhancement? I doubt it. When the effect wears off, what is the buyer left with??

Stephanie, I agree with you 100% plus the fact that I really do not think that supplements concentrated to the amount to induce a color change would be healthy.

This is what I was responding to when I posted. Sorry for the confusion as to who I was quoting. :wavey:

Maybe their meaning is that it is the first product made ONLY to color enhance??? Aren't the other color enhancers described used as a vitamin/mineral suppliment???
