• Responding to email notices you receive.
    **************************************************
In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

  • IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ!! About the Google Adsense ads being displayed

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    Addendum: 01/10/2026
    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Just received this notice:
We are performing emergency maintenance on all servers due to a new linux kernel exploit. Right now cp3 is down as we are waiting on the network to boot it back up.

There may be mixed downtime through the day for all servers as we reboot and perform the fixes so please be patient. We understand that any downtime is bad but this work is of the upmost urgency to everyone's security. We expect a full resolution by this afternoon.

I'm still getting new post notifications by email to subscribed threads but I cant connect into fauna through my browser. I have to use vtunnel to connect and then log in.

Is this normal during the maintenence?

No.

I am still logging in normally.

During a kernel update the server will be down completely. Wish I had more warning of when exactly that would take place, but such is life. The data center I am now with is REAL big on plugging up exploits and holes in security, so I'm not going to complain about them doing that particular job as expeditiously as possible.

Cripes. I wish I knew why I cant log in normally without having to use vtunnel. I've tried a reboot, disabling/enabling my network card, etc..., but nothing seems to work.

Just in case someone brings this same issue up with you, it started about midnight last night. I was replying to a thread and lost connectivity.

Well...at least I can get in one way or another. Thanks for the reply and your time Rich.

When I try to connect in either by email link or typing the url IE displays the standard IE browser message "cannot display the webpage" after about 30 seconds. I tried through firefox and netscape and its the same. I tried clearing out cookies and simple stuff like that but to no success.

I'm currently logged in thru www.vtunnel.com. Its weird I cant hit your site from my ISP directly but I can if I go to vtunnel and log in that way. All the other sites I normally visit I have no problem getting in. :(

My guess is that it may be related to your IP address. Ever since the DDoS attack commenced, some IPs that are apparently being spoofed get blocked by either the firewall or DDoS mitigation code running on the server itself. You may want to see if you can get your IP address changed with your ISP, OR check if they are doing some sort of IP blocking themselves. Since bypassing ISP blocks is what apparently vtunnel is used for, this may be the cause of your problem.

I have seen an increase in the strictness of some spam blocking, so this is entirely possible. You may be getting your emails filtered more than you would really like, as well.

Sometimes powering off your router or cable modem or whatever it is you use to connect to the Internet for a minute and then rebooting it will reset your IP.

I just checked and the server had been rebooted four and a half hours ago, so I am assuming that was done after the kernel update.

Heck, I didn't even notice it when it happened........... :shrug01:

I don't know what happened but I'm able to log into the site again like normal.

Thanks for the help and suggestions guys....much appreciated.
Your IP has changed...or is that because you aren't using a proxy any more?

Just a casual observer who is an idiot to most of this, and that's just the opiniion of one of my son's. Couldn't log in most of the day, then it returned later in the afternoon. Didn't change squat. I think the powers that be, to include those infinitely smarter than I with these electronic contraptions, just got all back to the new normal. If I had a clue I could really enjoy some of these discussions more. In my next life it would seem <sigh>.

Jim,

I'm not far behind you in years so I understand. We were having a discussion the other night on a non-reptile related forum that I administer about that sort of thing. I related that I tried, without success, to teach my father how to use an ATM about 20 years ago. He spoke of learning computers in the early 1990's but he had no chance. I thought mastery of Space Invaders was "the bomb" and now my son plays games I can't see or react fast enough to follow much less play. Oh, and my son is an engineering major, and I don't understand the names of his course, much less their content. It's progress, my friend, progress.

I think so? Since my last post I have been able to connect in normally without going through a proxy. I called my cable company for support but..I hung up after 45 minutes of spanish mumbo jumbo. I went to the store and when I returned home I clicked on an email link and I was able to log right in.

rotflmao. Same thing here. I tried what I knew...the basic stuff...then I gave up.

I go to the store for a bottle of vodka and tonic water and when I get back everything works fine!

see...vodka makes it all better.
wonder if this means I will be able to get on from home now?

Good. Now that this is resolved, please remove that link from your signature area. Your use is NOT what that function is for on this site.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Is it just me or is the site having problems right now?? Very slow and times out.. Not having trouble with any other sites... Randy
