Hi. I raise my own mealworms for feeders. I was just wondering if anyone knew of a good place to get mealworm bedding/gutload. I have bought some on-line from a company before, and both times the bedding was full of moth-eggs! (So now I have a infestation of moths in my house and no one is very happy.) If no one knows of a place to buy already made bedding that doesn't have bugs in it, does anyone know what to make it out of? Thanks. :)

I think Cody's got the best gutload available right now. I got a big bag from him a while back and it seems to work better than anything else I've tried. Others will probably chime in with their experience, too.

You can see his site at www.progeckos.com

Good luck, sorry to hear about the moths. :(

I only use gutload from Progeckos.com and have now for a few months, I have also tried others and tried home made gutload but Ive had the best results with feeders and my leos look better and gained weight after egg laying better. My mealie colonies have also done a lot better since I started using Cody's gutload.

How do you remove the mealworms from the bedding? I am very allergic to most bedding dust. Is there a very efficient way of doing this quickly without dust and bedding everywhere? Thanks!

Are you allergic to wheat/gluten? Many beddings use wheat as a base.

I'm pretty sure Cody's ProGutload uses corn as a base (maybe he'll chime in about that). That stuff is THE BEST! I've used it for a few months, after I had used a home made gutload for awhile. If you like your gecko with a little ghetto bootie, then this is the stuff you're looking for. They've gained weight while eating 20% less since I've made the switch.

Also, never had an unwanted bug problem from his gutload.

Bruce, you can just put a peeled apple on top of the bedding. The mealworms will gravitate towards the moisture. Go do some chores, and then come back every once in awhile to shake the mealworms into the container you want them in. It takes time to get all the mealworms out that way, but it's pretty efficient, and you don't send dusty mealworm poo all over the place. Been there, done that. ;)

Tiffany, about your moth infestation, you can cut things down by sealing up all food that they can lay eggs in. Make sure you don't have any open bags of cat or dog food, try to close off access to the mealworm bins, and hang up a couple rolls of sticky fly trap. The moths are short-lived, and once you stop them from being able to breed, you can get rid of them. I keep unwanted bugs out of my bug cages by using screen tops and then just laying some paper towel over the screen.

I use Cody's Gutload and it is great! I was making my own for a while, but it didn't come close to his. I would definitely recommend it

I take a big spoon and spoon over the meailes and gutload to a spaghetti strainer and use one of those little 1-2 gallon trash cans to sift the gutload into, then when I get the meailes I want I put the gutload back in the bin.

I use mostly plain wheat bran for bedding

Bruce , also try either a cat-box scooper (UNUSED OF COURSE :hehe: )

or a strainer type handheld kitchen utensil .

I use the later , its basically a wide spoon with holes in it .

I just scoop up some and shake from side to side , the bedding falls through leaving the mealies , then i fill up my cup and dinner is served (ding ding)

NOT MY DINNER , THE GECKOS :raspberry

Thanks for the info! You guys are great! I think I will try cody's gutload. Kendergirl-those are some really well-fed geckos! Never seen any that fat before! About the moths-I don't think I have to worry about them anymore. I threw away the infested bedding last week and I haven't seen any moths flying around for a couple of days. Thanks again for all your help! :)
