In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

  • IMPORTANT! PLEASE READ!! About the Google Adsense ads being displayed

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    Addendum: 01/10/2026
    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Member forums?

Would you be interested in member forums here?

Would anyone here be interested in having their very own forum on FaunaClassifieds? What I have in mind doing is to offer people who may be interested the opportunity to have their very own forum on this site. Anyone who has had an interest in having their very own message board might want to try this out first to see if they like it or not. If they find it is workable and want to expand into their own site, then I could then transform that forum into a direct link to their own site. So when a user clicks on that link here, they would automatically be taken to their new site instead. Of course, all posts made here would be lost, as there is no way to be able to transfer those threads to an external site.

Each user would be the moderator of their own forum with the rights to edit or delete any messages posted there. So it is REALLY their forum!

As an alternative, I could also just set up a direct link right off the bat, so this would work as a rather effective advertising avenue for some people.

Unfortunately, I cannot offer these services for free, as they do take up resources here as well as valuable space on the displayed pages. The member forums would be priced much less than the direct links to an external site, since those member forums would be helping to pay their way by hopefully giving other members another interesting place to visit while here. The external links, however, would be little more than simply advertising links and as such, I think they would be worth at least as much as the banner ads that are running on this site. But what I may do is offer a rather low introductory price and just see what happens. Might just flop like some other ideas I have had in the past....... :shrug01:

Off the top of my head, I'm thinking maybe $25 per year for the member forums and $100 per year for the external link.

So give me a sign on the poll to let me know whether this is worth pursuing or not. If few people are interested, then I would rather not waste my time setting it up.

Thanks!

I don't see a poll... But... I'd give a personal forum some serious consideration, I suspect a lot of other members would as well but it's just a guess... You'd want some really specific wording about how any given individuals forums do and do not relate to the rest of Fauna but... Very cool idea.

Edit: Poll was there (obviously)... browser glitch kind of made it dissapear momentarily.

I set up a couple of external links as I mentioned in this thread, if anyone is interested in seeing what it will look like. There can be several levels to how this will work. Basically ANY forum can have subforums, and any of those subforums can be a directed link to your website. To see what I mean, take a look at the following:

From the main forum page you can see a category called "FaunaClassifieds - Linked Sites". All of what look like forum listings there are actually external links to those websites listed. Clicking on that link will take you directly to the website listed there.

This gives you a better view of what I am talking about:
http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=664

To get an idea of what this will look like as subforums of other existing forums, check out these links:

http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=501
http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=345

YOUR website link can be added to any forum on this site where it is relevant. Of course, there is a "clutter" factor that I will have to keep in mind, so I am going to limit the number of these external links within any given forum. Some, such as the BOI, of course, will not have any such links tied to it.

Anyway, if anyone is serious about getting started with this program, let me know so I can get busy figuring out the mechanics of payment and other details.

Thanks.

I would tend to think that this would be more trouble to you than it's really worth. Perhaps if someone wanted to have their own forum you could just offer that as a Fauna-Hosted site. Set them up (for a fee) with their own bare-bones site with the forum as a part of it. Anything else, I feel, would be too much work for you. Also I think it would be bad to just have an extention of Fauna. It's already spread out as it is. More forums would just be even more confusing to those who wanted to post on any particular subject. If they are that keen on having their own forum then they could certainly pay for a Fauna-Hosted site and be added to the list of those who are already paying for that. vBulletin added to the Fauna-Hosted site would be extra $$ for the hassle you will have to go through not to mention the emails you'll be getting full of "How do I ban a user?", "Hey, do you know how I highlight ever new thread?", "Rich, how can I change the background colour, the font size, reconfigure it so new users have a trial period, and only allow certain users to see four of my 19 categories? Oh, and would you happen to know what "Reputation Power" is all about?"

Just my two cents, of course.

BTW - how many threads will be posted each day with "come check out my forum!" as the title?

*groans*

No. A user forum here would be "plain vanilla". One forum, that's it. No categories, no subforums, nothing beyond the ability for people to post there and the "owner" of that forum to be a moderator of it. As moderator, they could do soft deletes and edits only. No banning of members and nothing complex such as an Admin (me) can do here.

Probably exactly the same number of those threads that would be deleted.

As mentioned, this would be a "personal" forum in that topics would be more oriented towards what the owner wanted to talk about. Sure people could talk about topics that might be relevant in other forums on this site, but that's no important to me. Anyone getting a large following would more then likely want to get their own website anyway, and as such, changing over their forum to a link to their new website would be the logical step for them to take in order to maintain continuity with their user base.

Will this work out? Heck if I know.

Since there appears to be at least some modest interest in the direct links, I have set up a subscription plan to handle the payment details of this offering. http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/subscriptions.php?.

Anyone who takes advantage of this will need to email or PM me after payment has been processed and let me know where exactly you want this link to appear as well as the text of your link and a short description to go along with it. The benefit of using this internal subscription plan is that it wil automatically contact you when the 1 year has elapsed on payment for your link.

Thanks......

After a discussion last night with one of our members (thanks Kelli!), I have decided to lower the price for the external links (we can even call them Sponsor's Links if you would like] to $50 per year per link. This is an introductory price to "prime the pump" sort of.... :)

You can have that link in ANY forum you would like except for the BOI. These will be displayed at the top of all of the forums in a section labelled as "sub-forums" and will provide a direct link to your own website.

Space will be limited to no more than 6 sponsor links per forum and is available on a first come, first served basis. Links will be listed in the order in which they are received.

So if i wanted to use my own forum that i have just started, and wanted an external link from fauna, so i could get more members, i could do this with a once ayear payment?
Have i got that right?

Yep. Your sponsor link in the forum here of your choice would point to your own forum on your site.

Sorry, lost the thread.
So what will the cost be for this service? and what type of payments do you accept?

Ok, i've just found the Available Subscriptions page.

I just had an idea. Impractical, I'm sure. But worth a mention, I think, just for fun.
There is a classified deal on the internet called Craigslist where if enough people vote down a certain post, it just disappears.

My idea is different though.

My idea is to have a temporary restraining order (I mean, forum) where if enough members made a small contribution like a dollar (so someone with bucks couldn't jail up people for life) we could pay for certain people to be RESTRICTED to a certain forum for a week or so.

And, you could put the forum on 'ignore'.
(I'd probably visit from time to time  )
