Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them.     Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

I had a trade lined up for my adult male green burmese python, 66% het granite, 100% het albino to Michael Voorhies for his gravid female 66% het pied ball python. I said I would ship first, with hesitance, as I normally don't like doing it. He said he wouldn't even go for same-day shipping, that he had been screwed over in the past over this. So I shipped out my animal on September 8th through UPS, and I got the following email from Michael the next morning saying he had received the snake:

Wednesday, Sept 9th, 2009 at 11:41am

"Just got him in and handled him with no problems. and yours will be on its way tomorrow"

Well the next day I didn't hear anything from him and so I got worried. He finally got back to me late that night (technically the morning of the day after):

Friday, Sept 11th, 2009 at 12:59am

"just got home. sorry i didnt get her out today to make a long story short i had a buddy get killed today in a car crash. i will get her out asap maybe wednesday at the lastest but you will get your snake. im not a scammer just something more important came up today. i am sorry for the stress"

Now I am not heartless, so I said everything was okay, and waited until the next week until I contacted him again. I shot him a quick email on Tuesday hoping he would ship since I have the easiest time recieving animals on Wednesdays as they are my day off:

Tuesday, Sept 15th, 2009 at 10:28am

"Any chance of shipping today? It would make my situation a lot easier."

I never got an answer. At this point I was getting upset. These were my next two emails:

Wednesday, Sept 16th, 2009 at 1:31pm

"Hey. What's going on with the ball python deal? I haven't heard from you. Are you shipping today?"

Thursday, Sept 17th, 2009 at 10:47am

"Hey listen I'm really getting upset here can you at least answer me? I
really don't want to have to go to the BOI but I traded u a really
good snake and now... Nothing."

Now I normally don't like to threaten people with the BOI but it had been over a week since he had received my snake and he hadn't shipped his yet. Here was his response:

Thursday, Sept 17th, 2009 at 7:35pm

"dude im busy with something more important you will get the snake"

Since then, I have emailed him several times but have gotten no response. So long story short, I got scammed out, sent out a high quality snake and got nothing, paid for the shipping for a heavy snake and just got an attitude. Don't trade with this guy! Or at least, if you do, DON'T send your animal first!

If you post the email address, telephone number, and the address that you shipped the snake to, someone may be able to identify "Mike V."

Good idea. I saw the following from his previous postings:

The name definitely sounds a little fishy.

The comment, "dude im busy with something more important you will get the snake" doesn't sound too reassuring. Maybe a call to his local police may be able to spark his interest in sending you the snake.

Has this outstanding pillar of the reptile community been made aware of this thread?
 
Does calling the police really work? I don't think they would care enough, honestly.

Must be a parent as his profile shows:
Date of Birth March 14, 1988 (21)And yes, sometimes calling the local police can do something, especially if the individual is already known by them.
 
A Myspace search for the name Michael Voorhies turned up 5 results, one of which was this one:

So most likely his name is indeed Michael Voorhies. Either that or he's using the same alias routinely. I doubt he would do that on a MySpace page for his "business" then use the same alias on what is so far a bad deal.

I mean, I honestly don't want to get to a point where I have to call his parents, and I don't want to get the police involved for one reason: He didn't PAY me for the animal. We agreed on a TRADE, so no money is involved. In that case, I feel like they will be like "well you were an idiot to send him an animal and just trusted to get one in return." But I guess now that I have all this information, I could give the house a call, ask for him, and call his bluff over the phone. He can't just ignore me that way.

True. I do see your point, especially since no money traded hands. I suppose all you really can do at this point is call the house and speak to him. If, by chance, you get his mother, you could just casually let her know the nature of your call, without being accusatory or frantic so they don't get terribly defensive.
 
But doesn't the snake she sent him have a value? People barter all the time, and I believe that paying in goods would hold up the same as payment in cash as long as she has the emails to back it up. It wouldn't hurt to call his local PD just to inquire about the situation and what steps to take.
 
your right... no money changed hands... but animals did. Thus far he has scammed you... and thats ILLEGAL.

Call the cops.
 
If your snake meant anything to you, you would do what it takes to either make the situation right or get your animal back.

Why let this kid get away with it? Age doesn't matter, a scammer is a scammer.
