• Responding to email notices you receive.
    **************************************************
In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Midnight EST, 09/21/10 - server upgrade

ummm Kelli.... you missed the point.

The problem is doing a thumbnail attach in the classifieds section using the URL to attach it

Ah, I see now... LOL I didn't even know that option was available (I've always just uploaded the thumbnail from a file on my computer or used the img tags to upload an image).

Anyway I tried to upload an image using a url and it failed for me as well. For what it's worth.

I noticed today that when I try to view threads in the BOI and general bs topics it keeps saying I need to sign in. It used to only say that when I was trying to view Hell or something of that nature. Does this have to do with the recent upgrade? or am I just crazy?

If this is in the wrong place, sorry.
-April (who can't lurk like she wants to)

Nope, this was something I did. Except for the classifieds sections (except for the non-herp ones, which I've just been too lazy to deal with), viewers need to be registered and logged in to be able to read any of the threads. They can read the topic lines, but not the thread content.

The reason for this is because I feel that those lurkers really have no intention of contributing to this site with posting. They are here merely to read and not actually participate in any manner whatsoever. Matter of fact, if they should decide to participate with a reply to a thread, more than likely they will not, because then they have to go through the login procedure, then find the thread again, and most people probably won't do that.

Secondly, the server stats have been climbing pretty high lately, so in this manner I can cut down the amount of traffic being spent on search engine spiders that wind up accessing every page on every thread in every forum. I really don't even want to think about having to go through another server upgrade anytime soon, so I'm going to be looking at reducing overhead and loading first before I hit that bed of coals I will have to walk on again.

Hope that explains it well enough.

Yes, it does, thanks Rich.

This means you'll be seeing my name online more often because 80% of my time on here was spent lurking about.
:)

Rich,

Without lurkers you wouldn’t have members and without members you wouldn’t have participants. Personally if I visit a web site that’s locked there would be no chance that I would even bother signing up; I’d just move-on.

Lurkers that appreciate the information they find here are likely to become members and maybe participate or become paid contributors!!

Fauna did not become one of the greatest reptile forums on the net being unavailable to non-members. I’m certain many members like to lurk without being signed in just as April stated and likely many others including myself that like to browse around without having to be logged in.

IMO I think you should leave fauna open to the public.

Im gonna have to agree with Steve.

The other day I went to check out a forum that was recommended to me. I wasn't able to lurk and see what the place was about.... so I moved on. It may be a very good forum with good people, but I will never find out.

I lurked around here checkiing the place out long before I ever signed up. What made me want to sign up.... I wanted to put my .02 cents in on a topic. But if you cant read the thread.....then how do you know you want to post. Just thread titles will NOT make you want to post.

Another example....

When we were trying to get the word out about the Wise's.... if you shut it down then what good does it do? There are alot of folks out there that will NOT sign up just to read something.

Last night I processed over 70 new registrations, up from the normal 50 per day. So I believe your fears may be unfounded. And I'm sure some were predicting that membership would suffer when I cracked down on the rules about providing full names and locations. If there is one thing I have learned running this site, it is that you just can't predict what will happen when you make changes. You just have to try them and see what happens.

And yes, I realize that I may very well lose a few people in order to gain more, but I am prepared to have that happen. It would only be if I found I was losing a lot and gaining a few that I would recognize that my change was in error. But I've already been there and done that in the past. Heck, there will be people who bitch and moan about the site NEVER changing at all, for that matter.

As for people who won't sign up just to read a thread, heck, I've done that myself. But if the site is some place that I think I would like to participate within, then heck yeah, I'll register. Well, right now, I'm not interested in catering to people who wish to just be lurkers here. I'm looking for MEMBERS who want to participate. So that is becoming my target audience for this site. I believe there are people who have been lurkers on this site for years. Well, time to sign up and maybe even post now and again. This site has been around long enough for you to figure out if you want to be part of it or not. If you do, well then WELCOME into the fold. If not, well then have a nice day anyway.

Besides, being banned from this site isn't really much of a penalty for anyone if that can still read everything anyway. So I think it is time to raise the ante for those people who wish to cause the mods trouble and flaunt the rules. The penalty just got a little but stiffer.

Sounds like your causing yourself more work. Sure... your numbers may be up.... but are those PARTICIPATING MEMBERS.... or just folks that signed up so they can still lurk?

If its one thing I have learned from running my own forum... just cause you have new registrations doesnt mean the site is growing. If they sign up and then never post.... you really haven't earned anything.

Once every couple of months we go thru and prune the database. If you aint posted in a year... your gone.

I'm not really trying to earn anything at all. I'm trying to make the site more efficient and useful to the people who WANT to participate here. Those are the people who will help grow this site. Most of the functionality here is actually free. So is registration. So if someone doesn't want to make even that minimal effort, well, I'm just not going to cater to them any longer.

Heck, we are getting close to 1,300 posts per day now. Certainly there is SOMETHING nearly everyone can find reason to reply to around here. Once they are registered and logged in, well it is MUCH easier to make a spur of the moment reply to something that catches your attention.

I'm planning on doing that about once a decade....... ;) Surprisingly enough, it is not at all unusual for people to come back after being away for two or three years.

Since I have cut back some of the functions that guests can access, in order to limit the bandwidth that search engine spiders use when visiting (for instance, there is no real reason for search engines to download attachment images), lurkers won't get much benefit out of most of the site anyway. I actually would like to cut out the downloads for guests in the classifieds section as well, for server load reasons, but I think it best for the advertisers that this capability remain.

Cant argue that logic :D

We thank you

I've been communicating via email with a member that has lost access to this site via her home computer and laptop. The timing seems pretty close to this last upgrade - I don't know if the two are related, but I'm posting here in case somebody has some suggestions. These are the two most recent messages:

I haven't been able to get on the website since I think it was the 21st or 22nd I don't remember which but it's been a while. I've restored my computer and reset all my setting and everything...I followed that link and I couldn't get in with that either. I've reset my connections to the internet, and nothing seems to work...I'm not sure what the issue is. I've updated java, and I've got internet explorer 8. It's just a mystery. One minute everything was working fine the next day everything was a huge mess and that was only site I couldn't access. I can access the cache but that's it...and it doesn't do me any good because it's just a snap shot of the site and if I try to navigate away from it, I just keep getting the same message, oh yean and I even downloaded foxfire to try and see if that would work but it doesn't seem to let me either. I can do things with my iphone but not with the computer...so the issue with with my laptop and desk top...I don't know.

I can access and even sign in on my iphone, but I can't on my desktop or my laptop, I thought maybe it might be my connection at home or something but it wasn't because I tried at school too and it's still not working. I don't know what the deal is. I've updated programs and then system restored, I've got no problems getting on other sites just fauna...it's the only site I can't access.

She really doesn't give us a lot to go on. Any messages of any kind? What exactly happens when she tries to come to this site?

I get a fair number of emails that will say nothing more than something like "Can't get in, can you help?" Nothing else.... Honestly, I've quit replying to them.

*brain is racked* what does it say when she tries to load fauna? Due to her thinking it was on her end, id think the typical, "error" message?

Well once I noticed I couldn't view fauna without being logged in I thought there it was some sort of glitch. I cleared everything from my downloaded history, cookies, cache etc and then pm'd Rich and he pointed me to this thread.

Some of the slower folks are not gonna to be able to put 2 & 2 together so if you don't want to respond to these inquires you may want to consider putting up a notice to guest that they need to be a logged in member to access Fauna.

I don't know what she gets from FireFox, but here are excerts from the previous messages (I'm only including the parts related to the site issue - the rest were sales transaction related). These are in chronological order.

I don't know what the deal is, but for the past couple days my computer has just not let me go on the faunaclassifieds at all, it gives me a page error message, and says that it can't pull up the page. I don't know why I've tried with both my laptop and my home computer and neither of them will let me do what I want to do, which is check my stuff on Fauna
Just an error a general error message, that says I can't display the page, I've tried both my home computer and my laptop. I can't even get to the home page, but in a twist, I can get on with my iphone. So I'm not really sure what's going on. It just shows up with this error message, I've tried clearing my browser history and favorites, I've tried, doing everything I can think of, including upgrading my browser to explorer 9 and using foxfire nothing is working. I don't know,

As far as the site goes, it's total mystery to me. I'm just getting this general message that says Cannot display website from internet explorer, I've tried rebooting but nothing seems to work, it's driving me a little crazy but that's only because I really like to look at stuff on Fauna, oh well I guess no fauna for me. I'll just keep working on the problem until I get it figured out I can't access it my home computer or on my laptop either...it's just strange, I've even tried using the wifi at school so I know it's not just the home network...

Just had this happen to me while browsing from the BOI to the BP Classifieds, after the 3rd refresh the page loaded.

Just a shot in the dark.... have her make sure that fuana is not being blocked by her security software. If she hasn't already... have her clear her cache. Delete her cookies, temp internet files. Reboot the computer.. .and try again.
