In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Mile High Herps (Susan Newman) - IBD Infected Snake

BW, I'm sure Donnie would agree with me if I said we could donate the money from one of our Pastel sales. It's a VERY worthy cause. Heck, we auctioned 2 babies for the Von Allmen family, and 1 baby went to the PIJAC auction at Tinley.

We have better stuff breeding right now, so if you decide you want to pick something out in the future for your collection, please feel free to do so. :)

Great idea, BW

Nice to see someone take such a horrible situation and turn it into an opportunity to do good and important work.

BW, I can think of no better idea than what you have presented above. Keep us posted when you have the details worked out and the PayPal account up and running. I for one will definately contribute to this cause. IMO, any who keep Boids should be glad to help with it.

All I can say is........

To BwSmith post 119,

You said Dr. Jacobson's IBD research has never been funded, is sort of correct. He has not recieve exact individual funding for that project but benefit auctions have been held for him before. I attended one held two years ago at the orlando show and somewhere around 5k was raised. However, being in the research field(across the street from Jacobson) I can tell you that doesn't even scratch the surface of what is needed.

He definately needs more money, more help, and more support. With MHH still selling animals there will no doubt not be a shortage of samples, unfortunately.

Since boids are not an agricultural product, and they are not viewed as pets by the mass public this is a problem we will have to take care of ourselves. Unfortunately many breeders are unwilling to go public for fear of hurting there future sales. Many breeders like MHH just don't care and assume if the snake is still right side up it must be fine.

As it was said before please keep us posted about the benefit auction/donation ability and I'm sure many of us will help.

Thanks
ben cole

Actually it was more than that by a few thousand ;)

We donated the reptile gift basket and bearded dragon at that fundraiser. We also at that time tried to do an ongoing donation project for him. But there was a problem about setting something like that up in a paypal account and who had accountability for it, so check out the University and his position on that before you do anything.

Several sites responded to me that they would be glad to add a donation button for him, but we were not able to put it together for him due to the paypal account issue.

His research is not only assisting boids, but he is finding many things he is working on also, that is helping other species like bearded dragons (adenovirus) and other snake (Paramyxovirus).

Let me know if you are able to do anything about this and I will be glad to help out and recontact others to pitch in.

BwSmith

I also wanted to tell you that Morris Animal Foundation and ARAV are more likely to fund a large research grant, if they are aware that the researcher has actual community support for infected stock and interest. As a group, you and all others can carry a lot of weigh in helping get something like that. He has to apply, but others can attach a letter of support for this.

I know we have done it in the past for bearded dragons about Chryosoporium anamorph of Nannizziopsis vriesii (CANV) aka in laymen terms as Yellow Fungus Disease.

I have a photo of Dr Jacobson from that fundraiser if anyone wants to see it, pm or email me.
(sorry, did not mean to highjack this thread)

You are correct. I was typing alot very quickly and mispoke. He has never had a grant for the research. He has had some donations.

What I am actually thinking is to create a new paypal account and a separate saving account and issue cashier checks. I bought the domain www.reptileresearch.com to manage everything from. I will start a new thread soon once I get the basics put together.

It would be cool if you could have all kinds of research papers and studies on the site. Anything that anyone has busted ass on and would like to share could be usefull to many. That site could be a huge resource for the community.

I chose that domain so that it could be versitile. The more content, the more traffic, and hopefully the more donations :)

Interesting reading. I agree that a lot more research should be done toward a more non-invasive testing method, such as blood samples, oral swabs, etc.

On the auction idea - it's a great idea, BUT, be very careful with the Paypal part of it. We had a member of our motorcycle message board with a similar idea to help injured riders through auctions and donations through a central Paypal account. Long story short, the IRS saw this as income for the person holding the account and saw not paying taxes on it as evasion. This person ended up shelling out quite a bit of money for the taxes and fines, all for trying to help somebody out. I'm not saying don't do the auction, just make sure you go about it in a way that won't get you in trouble. Make sure everything is documented and the money is donated to a non-profit organization.

That really sucks!!

B.W. man I'm so sorry for your loss, my heart dropped reading this thread.

My hope is that you get compensated for your huge loss.

I guess she felt she had no choice then to pawn the animal on someone else instead of taking responsibility herself. It’s really unfortunate that people don't choice ethics over Cash.

Where is this woman anyway, is she going to address the problem or is she running away?

B.W. lost not only money but he lost his love of these animals. It really something to watch them grow, breed or whatever your reasoning of having them. I can’t imagine having to put down so many animals because of selfishness.

B.W. I wish you the best!!

Tony, and others interested:

Bearded dragon breeders are going through much the same with a breeder of them that is selling infected animals. There is a thread on that too now on FC BOI. In some ways it is worse, he has already infected others, as he knows he is adenovirus positive beyond doubt, has had some of his breeders die and has known for at least a month while he is selling them off that the ones he is selling are positive. The thread is by another breeder he tried to SEND an infected dragons too, on purpose! Dr Jacobson was kind enough to write a letter to specifically address this situation and selling any viral infected animals to the public and it is posted there also

Here is that thread http://www.faunaclassifieds.com/forums/showthread.php?t=89566 Sorry as there are some rather long make so sense post from him on it, with things that have no reference to the issues.

We are trying to get him to stop selling them, or at least to warn buyers they are positive... it does not seem to be working :( and it makes all of us sick what this will to a species we love.

Mhh

Just FYI - it's MHH, not MMH.
And unfortunately, it looks like the search form sees MMH and MHH as too broad to search. I tried both and expected to find this thread and the one Jasin started asking about them; neither showed up.

Anyone else having any luck looking either of them up? I tried searching just the the BOI itself and still nothing.

Didn't hurt at all; it was a good thing! I just wanted the right letters there in case a search for it works.

I've been following this thread for a while and have to say that i'm both disgusted and horrified that anyone would knowingly sell a snake knowing it's pretty much a death sentence to any boids in a collection.

BW: I've been reading your posts here and other forums for several years now and you've always struck me as the type of herper we should all aspire to be. Knowledgeable and truly caring and interested in our animals, be they pets or breeders. I am so sorry that you have been put through this, both for the dollar value of the animals involved but moreso for the mental stress of losing old companions and not knowing when it will be safe to start over. From your posts here it seems you are handling it much better than I would be in your situation.

Please let us know when everything is up and running and i'll happily donate to the research fund myself.
