In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

But also with Dean about not wanting to be in some stuck up country club but that just is not the case with fauna and the comunity that we are..

Not very likely to happen here. But I would like the dividing line to be drawn between people acting maturely and acting immaturely, regardless of actual age. I don't want this site to be the equivalent of a grade school parking lot with opposing parties acting solely on emotion and under-developed brains and/or personalities. Attacking another member personally, calling them derogatory names and attempting to belittle them because of their statements and opinions is just not appropriate nor acceptable behavior.

My eventual goal for the BOI is to limit those discussions to facts that can be proven (or at least the poster is willing to stake their own reputation on), and opinions that are devoid of direct PERSONAL attacks against anyone engaged in the conversation. There has just been too much collateral damage in threads there that greatly inhibits many people from participating because the risk is too great that they will come under personal attacks themselves for trying to express their own opinions or provide some facts that may be pertinent. So this sort of behavior is actually detrimental to the goal of the BOI, which is to provide INFORMATION that may be of value to all the readers. When someone does not post important information because of the fear of being unmercifully attacked, well I believe we all lose out then.

I went this route before a while back, but tried to push it too hard and too quickly, which pissed a lot of people off. Yeah, suspending someone on a single infraction was too harsh, I admit. So now I am doing another push, but doing it more gradually so people can get used to the idea before the hammer hits them. But at least this time, I can legitimately say that they have been warned. Some will still get pissed that they can't openly call another an "asshole" or some other unverifiable derogatory slur, but that's just the way it is.

I decided to keep the BOI running, but it's going to be on the above terms. Those that desire a more entertaining venue where they can watch uncontrolled personal bashing take place will just have to find somewhere else to find that sort of entertainment. I don't WANT the BOI to be entertainment. I want it to actually HELP people in this business. It's MY reputation on the line for running this place, and I am just not going to let this continue in the direction I neglectfully allowed it to run in the past.

So yes, the mods are going to be tasked with helping me in this endeavor. It may not make them appreciated by some, but I suspect the majority of the people will certainly approve of the changes they are helping to take place. I believe the simple fact that I am processing an average of 50 new members every day is a real good indication that we are on the right track. So this is an opportunity for everyone who wants too, to help make this absolutely the best herp/animal related site in the world.

If I could have the plesure of a female mod yelling at me every once in a while I would feel more at home, kinda like when my Wife yells at me!!!!!!

It's a great plan and you stated it very well.

I'll make you a deal!!!

If no female mod is elected, I'll drop by your page to b!tch at you on a regular basis...just to make you feel loved!!!

Does that work for ya??

I think this is part of what needs to be done away with, this sense of 'ha, ha, look at me being bad, yeah, go ahead and yell a little, it's a pleasure'

Would I yell? No. Depending on the infraction, I'd just put you on vacation for a while.

Here is another thing that has not been said but I see happening. When you are a mod you can not be bias.... Not meaning that you treat one person one way and another a different way but that you do not let personal feelings draw you to warn or ban. There is a line. It is either against the rules or not.

Lets say two people are joking with one another in a thread and you don't like it... OH WELL! If it does not break a rule then you can not do a thing about it.

I see it a lot with mods. They let their feelings take over.

You dont have to read it it is last time I checked a Forum was for us to Forum together, you can not pick and choose what some one else thinks and says as long as they are not ,Mean,Rude,or just plain have problems getting along with others.I am not 80 years old I still use the forum to get Information ,sell, and conversate!
Im sorry if this does not appeal to you but some of the points you bring up around here have to start out with a lil joke because people are way to uptight almost sometimes can be downright Clickish on you if you say something they dont agree with! I was merely trying to help the Females get represented as My Daughter is a female last time I checked and I just wanted to represent her on my Pick a women topic for mod.
I appologize if I offended any one or jender.....
Peace and love to all!

Absolutely. There are people I personally liked in the manner with which they posted here, but regardless was detrimental to the site, and resulted in them eventually being permanently banned when my warnings went unheeded. Some people I literally bent over backwards trying to convince them to adapt. All to no avail.

You just can't play favorites. When it comes to the rules, whether someone is the biggest advertiser here, one of the highest levels of paid membership, my (or your) personal friend, or just someone freshly registered, but not using common sense about posting in public, has no bearing on enforcing the rules. Granted, there will always be gray areas, and many times these gray areas can be influenced not only by which of the mods happens to see it, but also their mood of the moment as well, but that's just the way it is. If you feel your post is putting a toe over the line, then you are willingly taking the risk involved. Normally you will received fair warning, but if you take a flying LEAP over that line, thumbing your nose the entire way, well, don't be surprised if that leap lands you outside the door for good.

I agree entirely.
I've given infractions to people I consider friends (I know and socialize with them off this site). I try to base those decisions not on who is posting, but on the post itself.

Off topic chatter, while it may be annoying in some cases, isn't something we usually aggressively pursue in the discussion forums...but sideline conversations on the BOI, or in the classifieds, are disruptive and get curtailed. Sometimes a smartass remark is just a smartass remark...sometimes it is an intentional effort to be a pain in the butt. It isn't always easy to say which is which. For example, just this afternoon I saw a post in an ad that prompted a response from me - I had already intervened twice because people were arguing about a statement (and the OP hadn't made a comment since he posted the ad). After I threatened infractions if the disruptions continued, somebody posted a sarcastic comment.
It wasn't worth a four point infraction, IMO, but I was really tempted to give him a one or two pointer. Here's the catch - one point would have resulted in the person being banned for a month. Here's something for a little reflection by the nominees...what would YOU have done?? No need to post your response, its just an example of the situations you will find yourself in.

Harald let me say this... then you can decide since I haven't seen the post you are refering to.

I'm an Admin on another reptile forum and its been around going on 5 years now so I feel your pain... but IF I make a post and tell folks to knock it off (as staff) and then they want to get smart (and its obvious there is malace behind their words)... then I dont care if 1 point puts you over.... maybe you will have a better attitude when you come back.

But if I feel that your post may have been in a kidding gesture... I will give you one chance to right the situation... and if your next post doesnt come correct... your outta here.

Okay-here's my take on the situation-as a nominee.

Regardless of who the offender is...friend or foe...I think I would send them a "last chance" warning PM.

They might not realize how close they are to being banned.

I'd tell them exactly where they stand, and if they take the rope and insist on putting the noose around their neck and jumping off the chair by continuing with the bad behavior, SCREW IT.

They get banned!

:erm: last i checked, this thread was meant only to post your nominations for a future mod... rather than bickering about duties of the position. i would figure the fine details would be taken care of by webslave or another current moderator in private or a private forum. :shrug01:
