In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Since retics have been illegal in NYC for as long as I have been dealing with snakes on a serious level, and have been illegal throughout the state of NY for almost 2 years, I am inclined to pass this post off as a bad joke...but just to be sure - the guy at the petshop lied to you.

Sniff....sniff....yup, thought so.

Someone left the outhouse door open again and another troll has wandered in.

WHO LEFT THE DOOR OPEN AGAIN???

I used to be part owner of a pet shop, not that that has anything to do with reptile knowledge. You should probably stop trying to think for awhile - you might hurt yourself again.

btw - check your private messages

Snakezz mastar... A 10 gallon tank will not be big enough. a 6 footer is pretty big.. but wait until it gets around 12-15 feet or so. Heat rocks are a bad idea, the snake may get burnt.(UTH would be a better idea... if you dont know what that is.. do some research) Also, buying a snake without any idea as to what it may need/ requires, and any basic information on it... is a very bad idea. Poor judgment. Id suggest you took it back since you can't properly care for it right now. Once you get the right supplies and information you'll need to know. Then look into buying maybe a more decent sized snake.
Oh.. and do not come on to a web site completely dedicated to reptiles, and the well being of them, full of people who are far more knowledgeable than you on these subjects, and tell them they dont know what they are talking about. The people on this site are moer then willing to help someone who needs help.. but not someone with an attitude like yours.

Michelle,
Just put this idiot on ignore.
He joined Fauna today and every post he has made is antagonistic.

Obvious troll!

I agree. Your efforts are lost on this one, Michelle.
(for the record - while a 6ft retic might stuff himself into a 10gal tank, one would be pretty hard pressed to put him there)

I'm thinking it would be easy for it to get itself IN, but getting it out if it didn't want to could be a whole lot of fun.

That too. lol

Alright, correct me if I'm wrong (the experienced snake keepers only), but aren't retics mean little buggers? Not mean like they'll bite your hand off, but mean as in unpredictable (much like burmese). Now I don't work in a petshop, so I may not know anything at all about snakes (although I have kept many for years) but I would say a reticulated python is not a good beginner snake...especially for a 14 year old.

Every aspect of your post and comments screamed irresponsibility. When buying -any- animal whether it be a common goldfish to an extreme exotic ALWAYS know how to take care of it BEFORE buying it (and yes, this is coming from a person who spent over a month researching how to take care of a 2 dollar goldfish...we won't get into how may resources I looked into before I got my first snake). Also, know the laws in your state. If HHMoore says they are illegal in New York I would bet all of my assets on him being correct, not because he once was a part of a petshop, but because he actually knows his stuff.

The reticulated python is one of, if not the, largest python. It will get well beyond 6 ft, and not only will it get beyond 6 ft. but it will be a heavy moody little bugger and one person would be highly advised against trying to handle it by themselves. If you're dead set on keeping this snake realize you will be hand building it's cage, and it will take up a lot of room. You will not be able to feed it mice, you will more than likely have to go up to rabbits. Some time check out frozen feeder sources and you will know how expensive these can be and how many little things can add up to be 10x more than the snake itself (for example my first ball python cost me 25 dollars through a reputable dealer, and the simple set up cost me over a 100).

Please also remember that people in petstores are paid minnimum wage and are there because it's a "job". They don't always know what is best for the animal nor do they always care. The people who are here are here because we want to be-not because we're paid 6 dollars an hour to be. This is a hobby/passion/business/life style for 99.9% of the members here and thus we are more than willing to share our opinions and experience with you-all you need to do is NICELY ask.

I do commend you on getting a third opinion about how to care for your snake. That alone says that you have some desire to properly take care of it.

If you want to get into herps, I would recommend a more docile snake. Milksnakes, cornsnakes, and ball pythons are all pretty good beginner snakes.

Best of luck, and remember that we aren't saying these things because we're ignorant; we say these things because we do care about the wellbeing of animals and the hobby.

Jenna,
Imported retics, even babies, can be temperamental and unpredictable. CB animals, with just a bit of effort, can be wonderful, calm, and predictable captives (that is not to say that they don't bite as babies, or that you won't get an occasional pi$$y CB retic). Given their size, though, one should always keep the potential in mind.

- great post, btw

As a side note - I am always amused at how many people (regardless of whether this poster was serious, or not) put such faith in the knowledge of pet store employees.

The petstore I used for feeders had a really cool reptile guy. Granted it was one guy out of 3 people...one of the girls thought she knew everything about every single species they owned and she seemed knowledgeable at first until one realizes she knows the generics (ie this reptile is going to need additional heating, may I recommend...), and another girl had leopard geckos and that's what she knew (so I would have no doubts she could answer any questions about them), but the guy (my favorite) was a part of a reptile rescue so he had kept so many different species, and he was a big fan of iguanas and he was just getting into balls when I moved.

ow!!!!!!!! stupid snake!! i was showin harvey(retic) to my freind and i pet him on hed and he bit me!!!!!!!!!!! i hate snakes now!!!!11!!! wat shuld i do? my mom say throw him out????
