    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

    Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

    Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

    Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    =====================

    Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Well as our small collection grows we are looking into other types of herps, and my 4 yr old son loves tortises we are in Ottawa ont Canada and i'm not eaven sure if their legal but we would like to look into getting one although i have to say i know very little about them but i have been reading up jsut in case. i was just wondering on price range and if anyone knows if they are available here in Ottawa ,ont and weather or not they would be a good pet for a child, although we know who would be mainly caring for it good ole mom..lol.. any info would be great thank you all

Im my opinion a tortoise is not a suitable pet for a child. They are normally not appreciative of the attention given by a four year old.
Tortoises are unlike other reptiles. They require the biggest commitment to care considering their lifespan. Depending on the species, the tortoise may well still be around when your child is 50. They are definately not a species to be entered into lightly. Accepting the responsibility for the care of an animal for decades is a serious task.
Before you consider buying one, learn everything you can about them. They have rather specific dietary and environmental needs that must be understood. Pay special attention to areas such as shell pyramiding, and calcium requirements.
If after your research you still intend on keeping one, I would suggest getting a russian tortoise. They are a very hardy species, and more forgiving to mistakes. Stay away from sulcatas, or any of the other large species.
Russians are not an expensive species, but I have no idea of the cost or availability in Canada.

id say get an aquatic so kids cant get ahold of the turt as easly and watching him swim around will entertain them for hours i do the same thing with my lil bro and my turtle he watchs him for hours on end laying back staring at the turtle chasing feeder fish

a tort will be really easy for him to get ahold of

Also be warry of size. Some torts, like sulcattas, can get pretty big. Some torts are prone to upper respitory infections and others have specific dietary requirements. Torts make great pets but they aren't cuddly and they don't do a whole lot. Just be sure your expectations are realistic and that you are overly informed and prepared for a lifetime commitment. (you may be willing your little tort to grandchildren)
