In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

    Addendum: 01/10/2026
    =====================

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

My warning point seems to have wandered off....

As far as those who have been removed from the site either through suspensions due to their own actions or in some cases responding to your antagonizing mods, if my suggestions were in place and things were dealt with privately instead of out in the open in a baiting manner, maybe some of those people would still be here contributing like they should be.

Maybe so, maybe not. You still haven't proven to me that you know anything more about what you are suggesting then anyone else who has made suggestions here. I have no qualms at all taking advice from people whom I consider as professionals and more experienced and knowledgeable in fields I am lacking in. But as best I can tell, you just don't qualify, unless you are withholding information that has not been provided to me.

Well, let's see... you yourself said that the BOI is the main attraction of this site, so let me ask you why that is. Any guesses? Well let me suggest one or two. Because it is rather effective. Because it works in a lot of cases. And why does it work? Well because it makes public those issues that people doing things in this business would rather not have exposed to the public scrutiny. It can be embarrassing to have your peers in any industry take note of your failings and indiscretions. It is that incentive which is proving to be a motivating force to coerce people and businesses to do GOOD business, rather then BAD business. Sometimes it is after the fact, and MANY times it is before the fact after seeing the results of other people and businesses being exposed on the BOI for their wrong doing.

So let's stretch this ideology a bit to cover what I am trying to do here on this site with the creation of rules and the enforcement of them. Based on the number of gripe-o-grams I get whenever most people get warning points, I would have to claim that most people do NOT like getting them. They don't like them showing up on a public record that people can review. Are you getting this line of thought yet? It is this hoped for incentive to coerce members here to behave in a minimally respectful and professional manner that I have the rules here, enforce those rules, and display the results of NOT following those rules in a public manner. Yes, I have toned it back quite a bit, but still, there is a public record of a member's past indiscretions which is hoped will be a reminder to them to not proceed any further in those mannerisms. It is something other members can view to (1) be a slight embarrassment to the person having those warning points and (2) be an indication of such embarrassment being in store for THEM if they act in the same like manner on this site. So this PUBLIC display of the warning points hopefully serves a purpose which YOUR suggestion does not seem to take into account.

So with that being said, unless and until you can convince me that YOU know better about how to do this better then I do, then quite frankly, YOUR opinion carries no more weight then mine does. And since this is my site to try to manage in the best manner I can, and the results of which are my sole responsibility to bear, unless you have sufficient proof to provide to me about your experience in a site of this type with demonstrable results, then I suggest that you just accept that fact that I am NOT required to accept your suggestions, as you appear to be implying.

And as for the "antagonizing mods" swipe, (and in an effort to avoid getting a warning point for profanity myself) bull droppings. I am well aware of what my site mods are doing and I follow along quite closely in many of the threads they may participate in. To the best of my recollection, the ONLY time I have seen antagonism has been in the cases where people who already have a chip on their shoulder about one or more of the mods, usually because of one of more instances on some other site, has provoked them to bait or be antagonistic towards that moderator HERE. I have had several instances where people have claimed such a thing, and I have looked at the evidence in close detail to come to this conclusion. I am certain ALL of that evidence is still on this site for anyone to review and come to their own conclusions, and you are certainly welcome to do so. And I am further certain that if what you are claiming were true, I would hear a flood of complaints coming from a lot more people then just the minuscule handful that OBVIOUSLY already have a bone to pick with one or more of the site mods, and would love nothing better then to be able to chortle at having them kicked out of their position here. Sorry, bub, but the proof just isn't there, regardless of your own personal opinion on the matter. And I am just not dumb enough to not be able to see through what people are trying to do.

What?!!! It's gone missing for 2 weeks and I only now noticed? I'm a TERRIBLE point owner

Ah, excuse me there missy, that was my warning point. I purchased that warning point by making the highest bid on it if you don't remember. You just never delivered it. I think a BOI thread is in order. :raspberry

And right you are, it WAS your point!!!
I can probably get a replacement point for you, what color would you like?
Of course, it may not be an easier to deliver than the last one was, before the last one went missing, it stuck by me pretty close... :raspberry

WOW !!!! I am a free man too!!!! mine is gone as well, I like the ole "0" there much better then the "1", it was like a ball and chain i have been carrying around. I am breathing and feeling much better now!!! I am a warning point virgin again and i don't intend to loose my virginity again so easily. (Hopefully). I think i will go study the rules again to make sure I know them by heart.!! (sarcasm).
All kidding aside it is a relief to have it gone though, as anything with a detrimental meaning is never a good thing.

I don't know, I sorta developed an affection for mine. I sold it, auctioned it, tried to give it away, and still like a faithful dog it was there to greet me every time I signed on to Fauna.

I read this thread and my opinion (whether its wanted or not) is that if you have to go this far to keep order on a message board than it signals a failure at the top (owner and mods) in the first place. I don't see these issues on other boards that I frequent. Maybe its time to stop asking for the bad behavior by making the warning points, reputation and post count a non-factor. Get rid of the warning points, make the reputation points something only the person who was pos/neg repped can see and make the post counts viewable only in the user profiles. Stop glamorizing bad behavior as has happened as long as I can recall and handle incidents privately and quietly. Only then will you have a functional community instead of a free for all.

Jamie - Lots of people would have issues with the working you used for your "constructive criticism". You're saying that you think the warning point system doesn't work. I, however, think it does work. There have been quite a few lurking trolls that I've seen who kept coming back, over and over, trying different user names and sneaking in other ways JUST for the sake of antagonizing people, until finally the warning point/fine system just made them stop trying.

You have your opinions, but when you say "Well, if you need warning points, the site must be failing" - I'd be pissed to if it were my site. I'm not a buddy of Rich's, I'm not a mod, I'm not an advertiser here, but I honestly like the system Rich has in place. You made an "aggressively" worded criticism, don't get offended if Rich makes an equally aggresive response, and then say that he obviously doesn't want your opinion. Constructive criticism is worded constructively, not with animosity. Telling someone that the site they put so many hours of hard work into pretty much sucks would put anyone on the defensive.

I myself have had a few warning points (called a bad guy a name), and it worked for me, now I make sure I read over what I type before I click Submit. Is the site perfect? No, I don't think there is one that is perfect anywhere on the internet, but the positive changes I have seen since joining make me think that Rich does listen. Just like anything (including our own government!), this is an ongoing experiment that will keep changing.

Yeah, I guess you are absolutely correct. I have failed miserably with this site and it is worthless. Not enough members, not enough traffic, and really no reason at all to keep it going, now is it?
Rich, I love your sarcasm. This site is the best reptile related one in the world, quit whining, take part, or get out.

The facts are IMO

I normally do not get into these type threads, but rather sit back and watch the rhetoric as it unfolds. But as a member of the site, not a moderator and not with a particular axe to grind so to speak. I find it rather counter productive to the real intent of the this site for this type thing to be carried on for so long. This site has been and continues to be a place for people with like interests ( herps mainly) to come and exchange useful information on a variety of topics. Some will agree, some will disagree with the content that it provides and the way it is presented.

But just the fact that Rich and his team provide a place for this exchange of information is a real plus to me and many others that have been in this hobby for many years. The loss of this site and others with like content would be a reall loss to all of us.

In the "OLD Days" simple discussion about anything herp related was limited to your immediate circle of friends and you almost felt shut off form the rest of the reptile world. Information was closely held and new ideas were not open for public scrutiny and/or input. That really sucked as many a wrong path was traveled and sometimes you and your animals got lost before you could get back to the things that mattered.

Rich and his team may make mistakes. But as the old saying goes if you are not making mistakes, you must not be doing anything. This site and the others I frequent have a huge thankless task of trying to be fair, be open to changes to make it better and still achieve the goals of the site both monetarily and content wise. I personally appeciate the attempts of all of Rich's team to make this site a place to listen, learn and communicate with others in the hobby.

Just my 1 and 1/2 cents worth, now I will shut up and listen again for a while LOL. As that is when I have learned most of what I know. :ack2:

I absolutely agree. I returned to the hobby after many years of raising kids and this site makes a world of difference. It is a center for information, and for friendship.

I guess lately I have been wondering about a few (fortunately, very few)people who almost exclusively criticize rather than use their efforts to build a better Fauna.
To each his own, I guess. I'm glad to be here, and glad to build. Everything I build is not always a masterpiece, but I learn as I go.

Wonderful post, John.
Actually, you should be commended for your contributions to Fauna. People like you, that take time to give back to the community in their areas of expertise, deserve a big round of applause.
