    In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Hey everyone


We have a baby ball python, a little girl named Nagini, and she's our pride and joy. We live in Calgary, Alberta, and it's terribly dry here all year 'round.


Our problem is, even when we mist her terrarium, the water just evaporates too quickly. We have a heating lamp over one side of the terrarium (over the warm side, we have a heating pad underneath that end as well, since it's cold here as well), and we have a medium-sized water dish in the center of her 20L terrarium.


The hygrometer always hops back down to 10% humidity at the LOWEST, and it really has me concerned. She isn't showing signs of being dehydrated, no dry skin and she's reacting normally, no sunken eyes or trouble eating . . . we've had her for 2 weeks and a few days, we just want to stop any problems before they start.


How can we raise the humidity? I don't want our baby to have any problems :(
 
If you have a screen top you can raise humidity by covering most of the top with a towel. You can also use substrates like cypress mulch, which are great for holding in humidity.

We use Aspen right now, but if Cypress Mulch will work for her that sounds wonderful. And, dumb question, should the towel be dampened?

No, but I recommend you get other peoples input on how to raise the humidity also. The methods I told you about work well for me but I don't keep ball pythons, I keep cornsnakes.
 
Covering the screen top is only doing to allow the humidity to stay trapped within the tank. Because of your cold climate the additional heat within the tank is causing the water to evaporate at a higher rate plus having the fresh air circulating through the screen is increasing that rate. You can try a vented deli cup, fill it with water, and put a lid on it inside the tank. This will allow the water to air transfer to slow down a bit.
 
That is genius! I was entertaining this thought, but she's shedding right now and will knock over anything loose . . . I suppose we can Velcro it to the inside :)
 
Try covering 3/4 of the lid, except where the lamp is with press and seal, it keeps humidity in great and works better than a towel. It is almost impossible to keep good humidity with just aspen, try the coconut bedding that comes in bricks. That's what i use, it holds humidity well, looks good, and is easy to clean. Either mist it or pour a bit of water in one corner to raise the humidity, just don't make it too wet. If the air is that dry you should definitely consider getting a humidifier, they're a big help. I have one running all the time by the snakes to keep things at 60-65% humidity.

Try a wet sponge on the cool side, she can't spill it, it will help with the humidity and she can rub against it to help in shedding. Also cover the area not under the lamps with plexiglass or plastic wrap. This will help hold the heat in as well as the moisture. You can regulate the results by covering more or less area. Sounds like she is in a tank. Be sure to insulate the tank, that will do wonders. Cover the back, two sides and 1/3 to 1/2 of the front bottom edge. Also insulate the bottom 2/3rds of the tank, the cool end. Reflective bubble wrap works well, cuts easily and tapes on with packing tape or double sticky tape. Make sure the insulation edges are tape onto the glass to trap air.

We live in an open-area apartment, pretty much, if we left our humidifier on all of the time we would be humidifying the entire place . . . not that I disagree, but I would love to help our baby.

If we lived in a House, I would have a special room just for her, temperature and humidity controlled and everything. My boyfriend is a Journeyman Electrician, so he would be able to set something up for her. If only we could afford it right now :(
