I have two breeding groups of leos that for some reason lay the eggs in the wrong spots. I have a large tub with moss that is in the cages but they always seem to find another place to drop the eggs and I usually don't spot them till it's too late.

Any suggestions on how to get them to lay them in the right spot? Is my 6" x 12" tub too big?

Thanks....

Lou

try replacing the moss with eco-earth or bed a beast, its ground up coconut husk and the leos love to dig in it

what kind of moss are you using? terrarium moss? or peat moss?..

Try switching the substrate to vermiculate... I have had leos to drop outside the box with moss... Just a suggestion...

I’ve used moss before and the females always laid outside the laying tub. They actually never liked going inside the container. I currently use bed-a-beast, like Dan said and it works great.

Lou, i would go with eco -earth, bed a beast or spagnum peat. i wouldnt use vermiculite as leos love to taste everything and they might ingest some which may not be able to pass. are the eggs they are laying fertile? after about one or two weeks you can candle them with a pen light. i got a garrity pen light at wal mart in the sporting goods section. after the eggs have been incubating for about two week leave them in their incubation container and medium. simply place the penlight over the top of the egg, "flat" against it... if they shine a nice pink or red hue, they are good if they shine a yellow hue... they are infertile. allot of times eggs laid outside the humid hide are infertile... now this is not 100% of the time but most times they are. Are your males still in with the females?

Robin, your right they wouldent ingest any of the bed a beast... Come on! Moss is really the only option that has the least chance of ingestion....

yes but bed a beast, spagnum peat or eco-earthis normally larger (less likely to ingest) in size plus it would break down faster than vermiculite.. which is flaky... slate or shale like substance... i have seen vermiculite in stools before but never spagnum peat, eco-earth or bed-a-beast ... but shoot what do i know... i only got a couple of pairs of breeders and only been doing it a very short while so i could be wrong

I am not saying your wrong.. I have used all of the above as well. I like the beda beast and the vermiculate.. I have also used perli. in the egg chamber.. All breeders have there own ways of doing things and to each is the best way. Right?

Lou,
go ahead and keep them in until you know for sure that you are getting fertile eggs. for the lay box the eco-earth, bed a beast or spagnum peat will do you the best. for an incubation medium, vermiculite or perlite is what most people use. here is a link to albeys incubation method using perlite
http://www.albeysreptiles.com/incubate-eggs.htm
i know allot of people who use this method and it seems to work very well. i currently use vermiculite as my incubation medium but i might try perlite just for the ease of getting it... i have to special order my vermiculite.. email me if you have any other wuestions

Perilite with albey's method works soooooooooo well. So far I have had 100% hatch rate when the eggs are fertile.

Matt
