Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Neighbors Say Dubuque Home Smells Like a Zoo

DUBUQUE - Neighbors say hundreds of snakes, mice and rats are stinking up a Dubuque neighborhood.

Last month Dubuque police found 350 snakes living inside a Dubuque home. Police inspected the home and confiscated six illegal snakes, but they left the rest.

Now a next door neighbor is speaking out. She claims there's an unsettling odor in the air.

Kate Dean is sick of the smell she says is spewing from her neighbor's house. So she's made several complaints to the city's health department.

Dean said, "It’s almost like when you're at a zoo and one the animals does what it does."

Next door Bill Shaffer and Linda Merfeld house the snakes as pets. These are the snakes they keep in the upper level of their home and they keep hundreds of mice and rats in the basement to feed the reptiles.

"The rodents are in the basement but there is no odor coming out. We never open the windows down there for one thing, and they get cleaned twice per week if not more."

Bill and Linda would only allow us in the basement without our cameras because they are in the process of cleaning. But when we were downstairs it basically smelled like a pet store.

"I never noticed an odor, and if it was that bad you would think animal control or the health department would knock on my door and say it stinks out here."

But Dean is worried what she can smell might hurt her children.

Dean said, "During the summer we have to run the air conditioning all the time because of we leave the windows open and the wind is blowing from that way, then it comes in from that way.

The Health Department has investigated and says the odor is not a health threat; it's more of a nuisance. A nuisance Dean says she can't stand.

Dubuque does not limit the number of snakes a person can own. The Health Department says staff will continue to monitor the situation during the warmer months.

Ugh... neighbors. I wonder if the snake people can complain about having to keep their windows closed to keep the shrieks of children from interupting their peace and quiet?? :shrug01: People are getting more intolerant by the day.

I doubt the neighbor ever had a problem until she found out about the snakes. Neighbors can be such a pain. :yesnod:

SMART not to allow the cameras. They would have taken 100 photos and found ONE that looked dirty and used it. I would not have allowed the reporters into the property with or without their cameras. No legal warrant insisting.....no entrance onto my property~ they always sensationalize those stories as much as they can. If the worse they could bring themselves to say was it "smelled like a pet store" they must have seen the room on the cleanest day of the year~ with no rats pooping, giving birth, or fighting that day......because if they could have made it sound worse I have no doubt they would have.

350 - 6 =344 snakes in a house in a neighborhood.
Of course the house stinks, with that many animals pooping andpeeing it is bound to smell like the bottom of a kennel with dogs kept inside and the urine stench permeating everything in the neighborhood.
I think the people have the right to keep 'some snake's in their house, but 344 is overdoing it a bit.
What would you do with 344 snakes unless you were breeding them and selling them, which the article didn't mention anything about.
In this case, if the people are just keeping the snakes as their Pet's they are way out of line regarding the consideration of the other neighbors in the neighborhood.

Just because you don't have the experience to keep a large collection clean and healthy doesn't mean that others don't. With a proper, easy to maintain system, it is not all that difficult to keep hundreds or cages clean.

Just because the article doesn't mention it, doesn't mean that's not what's happening. It's not a detailed examination of their life, it's a quick news story. It didn't say what color their house was either, does that mean it isn't any color? Maybe invisible?

My neighbors stand out front, smoke cigarettes, and scream and carry on until after midnight. It is very annoying, especially when your trying to get a 3 month old to sleep. Snakes are quiet and do not disturb the neighbor in any way other than what is in her own mind.

Wow, thats about the most misinformed statement ive ever seen on this site.... do you PERSONALLY keep that many snakes? have you MET anyone that does?

Thats right... probably not. If youre going to make this hobby out like its some sort of puppy mill Crappy pet store, you can keep your comments to yourself. You obviously have NO CLUE about anything that has to do with this hobby or anyone in it.

I think you are on the wrong site.

To have that many snakes you've got to have a nice caging system, especially seeing as they've got mouse racks so I'd assume the smell could not be THAT bad. Surely no worse than having a few dogs around. Neighbor is probably afraid of snakes or dislikes the owners.

Why don't you people act like adults?
If you have that many reptiles in a house, they stink, period.
I work at a zoo and I know exactly what I am talking about, do you idiots?

Properly cared for and cleaned snake cages/racks do NOT stink....no matter how many you have. Perhaps you need to look into your cleaning procedures at the "zoo"?

And yeah, calling people idiots is real adult type behavior.

a person MIGHT think, that YOU think before you type. Do you ever stop and wonder if maybe somone else on a website works at a Zoo just like you, and can disprove pretty much anything youre saying right here, (unless of course their zoo is dirty too!)?

I agree with Cat, Maybe YOUR zoo should look up cleaning procedures... because as far as im concerned youre making it out to sound like a pretty nasty zoo if it smells that bad! and i DOUBT you have that many reptiles there.

What zoo do you work at by the by. Or will that not matter to any of us "Idiots".....

:iagree: :iagree: me too

I know Bill and Linda and a more caring couple of reptile keepers you'd be hard-pressed to find. I also own some awesome Florida Kingsnakes that they have produced.

To begin with, this statement is simply illogical. If you can keep one snake in a house with no odor, then there is no reason 350 couldn't be kept with no odor. The only question is will the significantly higher effort be put forth to do so. Snakes do not naturally create additional odor merely by being kept in larger numbers, and there is no basis for the statement that that many kept in one house has to stink.

There are several larger breeders in the hobby who maintain over 1000 snakes in their collections. Are you suggesting that the facilities of the Barkers, the Sutherlands, our webmaster here Rich, all stick to high heaven permeating their stench throughout the neighborhood?
If this was what was required to do this for a living, I seriously doubt many would want to spend 10 or 12 hours a day every day in that environment.

Have you even visited a well kept collection of that size? I have a few friends that have or have had numbers in that range and when you walk in their house or building you smelled nothing other than perhaps a faint scent of aspen bedding.

All your statement does is reflect poorly on whatever zoo you work for, since you are basically saying that their collection, however large it may be, smells like crap. That only suggests that their cleaning protocol is miserably inadequate, not that a large number of reptiles kept in one location smells horrible regardless of what you try to do about it.

The words "idiot" and "moron" are commonplace in the postings of "FZ" on this site. Apparently attempting to demean the opposition by means of name calling is a prime method of debate for this poster, for anyone who disagrees with his position, or commits an act he personally does not agree with is automatically branded an idiot. I suppose when intelligence is unable to be displayed, the only course of action available is to belittle the intelligence of the opponent.

In looking at the guy's post history, I kind of doubt he works at a zoo to begin with. The self-promoting refferences shift tense frequently; zoo he used to work at, zoo he works at, zoo he'd like to work at- making comments where he "imagines" working with king cobras, making comments that he does work with king cobras, making comments that nobody should work with king cobras...

What I think we have here is someone that thinks zookeeping is the end all be all of expertise that doesn't realize his conflicting and sometimes mutually exclusive statements will be questioned. In other words... a liar who didn't know the subject matter well enough to lie convincingly.

I went through a few more of his past posts and noticed the same sort of inconsistencies and drew the same conclusion.

What I think we have here is a bunch of morons that spend too much of their time on message boards.
