Seamus,
In large part, I agree with what you have written above. I too felt betrayed by Neil and his actions. Not on the same direct level as you experienced, having vouched for him to a friend, but rather as did we all here on the BOI, when one of our own turned to some of the very same actions that he previously ridiculed in others.
However, Neil has apologized for those things he did, and has been shown not have been guilty of some of the more heinous things of which he was accused. Do I trust him? Not on your life!
But I am of the opinion (and it is JUST an opinion!) that when anyone brings up the negative aspects of Neil's past in constant new posts, we only run the risk of making appear to be a martyr in the eyes of many, especially in those who are newer, and do not share that sense of betrayal that you and I do. So, I would like to suggest that if anyone should ever feel the need to show all sides of Neil in a thread, why not just post a link to one of the many options out there that do just that?
All publicity is good publicity, some say. I don't know if that's true, but one thing worse that a shady guy being let alone to be shady, is a shady guy being made a martyr, in my opinion. If Neil is truly repentent for his previous actions, fine. He should have the opportunity to prove himself over a LONG period. If he has not, that too will come out in the wash. But harping on him won't make either result appear any faster.
