In short, DON'T! Email notices are to ONLY alert you of a reply to your private message or your ad on this site. Replying to the email just wastes your time as it goes NOWHERE, and probably pisses off the person you thought you replied to when they think you just ignored them. So instead of complaining to me about your messages not being replied to from this site via email, please READ that email notice that plainly states what you need to do in order to reply to who you are trying to converse with.

Yeah, I know. They are a pain in the butt. But they pay the bills to keep my server running. Just a fact of life, I am afraid.

Want to get rid of them? Simple. Just become a Contributor level member or above and they will be gone. -> Please click HERE."

Is that too much for me to ask of you to keep this site running? Well, sorry about that. I too wish I could get everything for free. But alas.....

Google Adsense ad revenue for December, 2025 was just $30 over the cost of the lease for the server running this site. So, in effect, the money providing the incentive for me to continue running this site is coming SOLELY from the paid memberships and sponsorships here. Which honestly ain't much....

Idk, Im looking to pickup a new snake, and want some species ideas.

No set caging yet, as I dont have anything free.
Looking for something maybe a little less well known or kept.

Size, I could care less about Im a fan of hognoses, but also boas.

Looking for a little bit of a attitude.

No ball pythons.

Idk, Ive been looking at mangroves, king rats couple others.
ANy ideas?
Thanks.

Pituophis don't get nearly enough love! :D
They're easy to care for, hardy, look cool, most species have some morphs, are active during the day, and are very entertaining. I love how curious and in your face they can be, plus they'll probably have the attitude you're looking for. They love to bluff, even my tamest gopher still rattles his tail at everything. My more defensive female will posture, hiss, and give me the whole display - but none of them have ever even tried to strike, they just like to be heard. lol Maybe consider bulls? ;)

And of course if you like hoggies so much, you might want to look into some more. They all seem pretty neat, my westerns are proving to be pretty funny with their attitude, but personally I like easterns the best.

Others I'm not familiar with, but just tossing out there - white lipped python, madagascar tree boa, baron's racer, macklot python, dominican red mountain boa, yellow bellied puffing snake, short tailed python, vietnamese blue beauty rat snake, coachwhips, boelen's python, timor python, cave dwelling rat snake, scrub python, yello tail cribo, buttermilk racer, false water cobras, rufous beaked snake.... that's all I got at the moment. :p

Good luck with whatever you decide on~

Thanks for the suggestion.

Ya maybe a large colubrid With a attitude sounds
Good.
Yellow tailed cribo are beautiful but
Dunno how much they are?

And false water cobra, snake I've also thought about.
Any where I should look for Some
More info on pine bulls and gophers?
Def want larger size local, and female though. :D
Thanks for the other suggestions.
I'll look into them!

The classifieds here have some yellow tails for sale right now under "Pine, Bull, Gopher & Indigo" ("Other Snakes" if you're looking for FWCs) Other classifieds such as kingsnake.com often have them under "Other Colubrids" ("Rear-Fanged" for falsies) That might help give you some idea when it comes to prices, but you can also use Google to search for some seller's personal websites.
Drymarchon breeders seem to be a fairly tight group of folks, so you might want to try asking things on that specific forum~

Same with pits, but they're much easier to find (And usually cheaper, but a bull will definitely come in more morphs if you're into that) Personally I don't keep any bulls yet, but even my sonoran gophers are pretty large at just under 6'. (The male is about the same size in that pair.) Honestly surprised me in the beginning. lol

I'd go with a Cribo of Pseustes. A little more attitude - go with a scrub!
If you end up getting something from Pseustes, then please share. Info is kinda hard to find on them and I'd love to learn more!

I love my Black Tailed Cribo. They are the cheapest of the Drymarchon. They have great personalities, very active, great to feed and awesome to handle. If you have the money, I'd highly recommend them for a nice colubrid. Other big colubrids which are always great are the classic big ratsnake species, the pituophis as previously stated in the thread, and some of the larger lampropeltis species.

For a rear fanged colubrid, check out mussaranas as well. awesome temperments, rarely take to biting. They don't get much over 5ft, will eat like garbage disposals once you get them on a normal unscented diet and if you feel like it, you can always toss in another snake for a more "exciting" meal.

As far as boas go, I've had quite a few of various types. guess it depends on if you want something awesome to look at or something fun to handle with boas.... you could go with an Amazon tree boa which can be gorgeous but are a-holes, or you could buy a kenyan sand boa which are easy going/mellow, but you never see them haha.

as far as pythons, I'm new to them, but Morelia is awesome. My baby jungle carpet is the best snake as far as care and personality out of my entire collection. tame as can be, NEVER misses a meal (and will eat until you run out of food to give it), and is happy as a clam both in and out of the cage.

Oh, FWC's were mentioned earlier.

if you do go with a rear-fanged snake, just make sure to do your research on what the venom can do to a person. If you're prone to dangerous (like need an epipen) reactions to stings or toxins, you might want to think twice. If you're not, then just make sure you don't mind some swelling and some pain for a few days.

I've never owned an FWC or a mussarana, but I'd probably go with a mussurana if I was to make the choice. from what I can tell, the FWCs can be much more nippy/aggressive than a muss, but they sure do make for one hell of a display animal.

Right now, Im thinking fwc, mackalots python, or cribo.

Im already getting a arboreal cage coming in though for a atb.

One snake Ive thought long and hard about though is a dwarf retic.

I think I could handle it, but idk if I want to jump into that yet.
Although I would like to.

Based on what you got it down to... I'd say the Cribo. There are some nice yellowtails for sale in the classifieds here and kingsnake. As mentioned above, mussuranas are great and pretty impressive - check out John Michels' site (Black Pearl Reptiles). He is great to work with on prices and payment plans and has some impressive animals.

I'd skip the dwarf retic... it's hard to find a true dwarf so expect 10+ ft still. And the new laws won't make it easy to move with one.

Thanks for all the recommendations, I contacted John and I think I am going for a mussurana when he hatches some more out this year.

He has some awesome animals, and I might consider a indigo later on, but we will see:D

Neat choice! Congrats!

Very cool, I hope that all goes well for you! :D
I'm really curious about mussuranas, you'll have to let us know how it goes! :yesnod: Those piebalds of his are on my wishlist~
